Jonas Gustavsson blanked the Maple Leafs in the Red Wings’ 1-0 overtime win Saturday night.
You cannot be a very successful team in this day and age of hockey without a capable backup, so this is a nice start for Gustavsson in his first action of the year. The shutout was Gustavsson's sixth of his career. The Wings will hope they get more than last season when he had a 2.63 goals-against average and .907 save percentage. Oct 18 - 11:04 PM

Jonas Gustavsson will get the chance to start against his former club, the Maple Leafs Saturday night.

Jimmy Howard backstopped the Wings to a 4-1 win over Toronto Friday night and will get the night off in a back-to-back game situation.

Jonas Gustavsson will get his first start of the year on Saturday.

The Red Wings play a home-and-home with the Maple Leafs on Friday and Saturday, so Jimmy Howard will get the nod in Toronto on Friday.
Oct 16 - 5:04 PM

Jonas Gustavsson allowed five goals on 36 shots in Detroit’s 5-1 loss to Toronto on Friday.

The game was delayed because the Wings were stuck in Toronto traffic. With Detroit scrambling to get this game started, it isn’t a surprise that they struggled so badly tonight. Gustavsson will serve as Jimmy Howard’s backup this season and won’t carry much fantasy value unless Howard suffers an injury. Xavier Ouellet scored the only goal for Detroit.
Oct 3 - 10:52 PM

The big question surrounding Jonas Gustavsson going into the 2014-15 campaign is whether or not he can stay healthy.

Gustavsson has been plagued by groin injuries for the last couple of years, but he did feel good in the second half of the 2013-14 season. He'll start next season as Detroit's backup goaltender and should be fairly good in that role as long as he stays healthy.
Jul 28 - 9:38 AM

Jonas Gustavsson has reportedly signed a one-year, $1.85 million contract with the Detroit Red Wings.

Gustavsson had a 2.63 GAA and .907 save percentage in 27 games in 2013-14. He'll serve as the Red Wings backup netminder next season.
Jun 25 - 6:57 PM

Detroit GM Ken Holland told the Detroit Free Press on Thursday that "it appears we've agreed to a one-year deal" with Jonas Gustavsson.

His extension is expected to be worth around $1.5 million, which is what he made in his past two seasons with the Red Wings. Holland said the paperwork should be worked out within days. Detroit didn't want to give Gustavsson more than a one-year contract because they didn't want netminder Petr Mrazek sitting down in the minors for too long. Gustavsson will serve as Jimmy Howard's backup in 2014-15, while Mrazek gets another year to start plenty of games with Grand Rapids.
Jun 19 - 4:54 PM

Jonas Gustavsson could get a contract extension from the Red Wings in the near future.

"I've been talking to Gustavsson's agent," GM Ken Holland said. "He played good for us. We'd like to keep him." He posted a 16-5-4 record last season to go with a .907 save percentage and a 2.63 goals-against average. The Wings are comfortable with Gustavsson as their backup goalie, which will give Petr Mrazek another year to develop in the minors.
Jun 16 - 5:32 PM

Pending unrestricted free agent Jonas Gustavsson might be re-signed by the Detroit Red Wings.

He wants to return to Detroit next season and GM Ken Holland said Gustavsson is "still in play" for a new contract. He will serve as the Wings' backup netminder if he stays. Detroit reportedly wants to sign him to a one-year deal and give Petr Mrazek another year as a starter in the minors.
Jun 5 - 12:11 PM

It's believed that Detroit has at least some interest in bringing back Jonas Gustavsson.

Gustavsson is set to become an unrestricted free agent after completing his two-year, $3 million deal. He's coming off of an okay season as the team's backup goaltender, but he's dealt with a fair amount of injury issues over the years and Detroit might feel it's time for prospect Petr Mrazek to stick with the Red Wings.
May 28 - 9:00 AM

There is a very real possibility that Jonas Gustavsson will not be in Detroit next season.

The 29-year-old is an unrestricted free agent and will likely be looking for a multi-year contract. The Red Wings have an almost NHL ready Petr Mrazek, who could back up starter Jimmy Howard in 2014-15. The Wings could delay Mrazek's fulltime entry into the NHL by one season but not by more. So if Gustavsson insists on a multi-year deal, he could be looking somewhere other than Detroit. Stay tuned.
May 4 - 8:53 AM

Jonas Gustavsson made 29 saves on 32 shots in a 4-2 loss to Boston on Saturday in Game 5.

He posted a .917 save percentage and a 2.71 goals-against average in two appearances for the Red Wings in the postseason after Jimmy Howard was unable to play due to the flu. Howard won't be able to return now because the Bruins will move on to face Montreal in Round 2.
Apr 26 - 6:20 PM

The Red Wings have an interesting decision to make about backup netminder Jonas Gustavsson.

Gustavsson, who will start Saturday in Detroit's most important game of the season, will be a free agent at the end of the campaign. The Red Wing brass will have to decide if they want him back to serve as Jimmy Howard's understudy or whether Petr Mrazek will be best served by playing 30 games in Detroit next season as opposed to starting in Grand Rapids. Gustavsson had a solid season posting a 16-4-5 record with a 2.63 goals-against average and an .907 save percentage and is certainly still on the Red Wings' radar.
Apr 26 - 10:19 AM

Jonas Gustavsson will play between the pipes on Saturday.

It will be Gustavsson's second straight start because Jimmy Howard is dealing with the flu. He turned aside 37 of 40 shots in Detroit's 3-2 overtime loss to Boston on Thursday. The Bruins have a 3-1 series lead.
Apr 25 - 1:34 PM

Playing in place of the ailing Jimmy Howard, Detroit backup Jonas Gustavsson was excellent in a 3-2 overtime loss to the Bruins on Thursday night.

Howard was a late scratch due to the flu so The Monster didn't have a whole lot of time to get prepared, but he acquitted himself well by stopping 37 of 40 shots in the losing effort. Look for Howard to return to the crease for Game 5 Saturday.
