It should not come as a shock that Jonas Gustavsson won't return to the Detroit Red Wings in 2015-16.
The often-injured Gustavsson is an unrestricted free agent and he will not be needed in Motor City given the emergence of Petr Mrazek, who will compete with Jimmy Howard for starting honors. Gustavsson, who missed most of the season with a shoulder injury and a concussion, posted a 3-3-1 record with a .911 save percentage and a 2.56 GAA. The 30-year-old should be able to land a backup job somewhere in the NHL. May 9 - 9:05 AM

Jonas Gustavsson (concussion) returned to practice with his teammates on Tuesday.

It was his first session since he suffered a concussion against Boston back on Mar. 8. Gustavsson has appeared in just seven games this season and injuries have played a major role in that. "You have to find ways to try to prevent stuff from happening, but if stuff happens you have to stay positive and look forward and be a good guy in the locker room, and that's what I've been trying to do," he said. "I feel like they've been fluky injuries and that's just part of hockey. The main thing is how you handle yourself when it happens and how you move on." He hopes to play again before the end of the regular season and his return to the ice is an encouraging sign.
Mar 25 - 8:45 AM

Jonas Gustavsson has been experiencing concussion-like symptoms after Milan Lucic collided with him on Sunday.

Detroit has called up Petr Mrazek to take Gustavsson's place on the roster. Gustavsson has been limited to seven appearances this season and he has missed 39 games because shoulder injuries.
Mar 9 - 6:17 PM

Jonas Gustavsson did not begin the third period during his start against Boston on Sunday afternoon due to an undisclosed injury.

The injury was sustained after Milan Lucic collided with him. Gustavsson had made 19 saves and was trailing 4-1 at the time. It's been a rough season health-wise for Gustavsson. He's managed just seven games, going 3-3-1 with 15 goals against in that time. Petr Mrazek will be recalled to serve as Jimmy Howard's back up.
Mar 8 - 7:19 PM

Backup goaltender Jonas Gustavsson made 19 saves before he was replaced by Jimmy Howard at the start of the third period Sunday in the Detroit Red Wings' 5-3 loss to the Bruins in Boston.

Gustavsson allowed four goals in the two periods he played and his goals-against average bloated to .256. His save percentage is .911. His season record is 3-3-1. He is not a good fantasy option. In relief of Gustavsson, Howard made six saves for the Wings (36-17-11), who lost a second straight game in regulation for the first time this season. Howard, of course, is usually the Wings' starting goalie.
Mar 8 - 3:37 PM

Jonas Gustavsson will get the start versus the Boston Bruins on Sunday.

Mostly due to injury, Gustavsson has seen just six games for the Red Wings this season. In that time he's 3-2-1 with 11 goals against and three Quality Starts in five. Through 11 career games versus the Bruins, Gustavsson is 4-4-1 with 32 goals against.
Mar 7 - 8:57 PM

"The Monster" Jonas Gustavsson continues to be sharp since returning from injury issues, as he was a big factor in the Detroit Red Wings' 4-3 win over the Nashville Predators.

Gustavsson stopped 37 out of 40 shots for his third win of the season. He's stopped 65 out of 69 shots since returning to action, making it easier to justify demoting Petr Mrazek.
Feb 28 - 6:07 PM

Updating an earlier post, it appears Jonas Gustavsson will get the start against Nashville Saturday afternoon and not Jimmy Howard.

It will be Gustavsson's second start since his return from being out of action for a couple of months due to a shoulder injury. In his first game back from the injury Gustavsson played well in a 1-0 loss to the Kings.
Feb 28 - 10:06 AM

Jonas Gustavsson stopped 26-of-27 shots but it wasn't enough for Detroit in a 1-0 loss to the Kings on Tuesday.

Gustavsson was making his first start since November 5th and was rock solid in a losing effort. With his play he has likely secured the backup role to Jimmy Howard again after a shoulder injury had him on the DL for a long stint. He is worth a look as a plug and play start whenever Howard can't go. He has a 1.90 GAA and .924 save percentage in five appearances this year.
Feb 25 - 1:59 AM

Jonas Gustavsson will get the nod for Detroit on Tuesday at Los Angeles.

Jimmy Howard made 22 saves in a 4-3 shootout loss to Anaheim Monday night, so Gustavsson will get his first start since Nov. 5. Gustavsson's last appearance for the Red Wings came in Saturday's 7-6 overtime win over Dallas. He entered the game in relief and stopped both shots he faced to record the win.
Feb 24 - 9:44 AM

Jonas Gustavsson has been recalled by Detroit.

He played two games for the Grand Rapids Griffins during his AHL conditioning stint. Gustavsson hasn't played in the NHL since Nov. 5 because of a shoulder injury. He will be Petr Mrazek's backup on Thursday night.
Feb 5 - 10:34 AM

Jonas Gustavsson is expected to be back with the Red Wings on Thursday.

Gustavsson may dress as Petr Mrazek's backup that night against Colorado. He is slated to play in his second conditioning game with Grand Rapids on Wednesday versus the Toronto Marlies.
Feb 4 - 10:25 AM

Jonas Gustavsson may rejoin Detroit on their upcoming road trip.

The Red Wings visit Colorado on Thursday and play at Arizona on Saturday. Gustavsson appeared in his first game in three months this past Saturday when he suited up for Grand Rapids of the AHL and stopping 29 of the 32 shots he faced in a 4-0 loss to Milwaukee. He's expected to play for the Griffins again on Wednesday. Gustavsson hasn't played in the NHL since Nov. 5 due to a shoulder injury.
Feb 2 - 10:33 AM

Jonas Gustavsson has been loaned to the AHL for a conditioning stint.

This is tough news for Petr Mrazek owners, as this may cut into Mrazek's brief run as the Red Wings' short-term starter.
Jan 31 - 1:45 PM

Jonas Gutavsson may return to the NHL during the week of February 7th.

He will start Saturday night for the Grand Rapids Griffins of the AHL on a conditioning stint and may need another game or two to shake off the rust after being out of action since November 5th with a shoulder injury. The Red Wings could recall him for games against Arizona or Colorado next week. Petr Mrazek will continue to get the starts until either Gustavsson or Jimmy Howard returns to action, but he has struggled and the Wings will make the switch as soon as one of their veteran netminders return to health.
