Associate Coach Jim Playfair says that Oliver Ekman-Larsson's game defensively is underrated.

Everyone who knows hockey and fantasy hockey knows how good Ekman-Larsson is offensively, but his defense gets no publicity. "I think the perception out there is Oliver is an All Star in the sense that he's a point-producing guy,' Playfair said. "Well, he does that but I think he does it very well from a defending base. And as long as he’s consistently focusing on his defense, he sets us up to be a good team and he understands that." OEL has five goals and 10 points in 20 games but he does face the opponent's top stars every game and can shut them down. He is a must start.
Nov 29 - 6:44 AM

Oliver Ekman-Larsson played his best game of the season Sunday according to coach Dave Tippett.

Ekman-Larsson paired up against Oilers superstar Connor McDavid and held him in check for the most part as McDavid had only one assist in a 2-1 Coyotes win. "That’s the best game he's played this year," Tippett said of Ekman-Larsson. "He showed why he’s an All-Star defenseman tonight. He was outstanding." The 25-year-old defenseman has five goals and 10 points in 20 games and is a must start as he is one of the NHL's best goal scorers from the blueline.

Now, he just needs to do that in regulation (or overtime) because he hasn't scored a goal in 12 straight games.

During a delayed penalty in overtime, Oliver Ekman-Larsson made no mistake about scoring the decisive 4-3 OT tally.

OEL scored the clincher for the Coyotes against the Flyers, but he did more than that, logging a beefy 31:46 TOI (easily besting Alex Goligoski's 24:57 TOI). The stupendous Swede currently has a two-season streak going in which he's scored at least 21 goals, a rare feat for a defenseman.
