Nazem Kadri feels good about how this summer went for him.
"This off-season has been my best," Kadri said. "Physically, it has been easier. My body is catching up with me and it's easier to get stronger and I can work on those areas that I have to, a lot of explosive movements, agility, a lot of footwork. I'm continually working on speed and obviously strength. I think my lower body is a whole different ball game. I've become stronger and that's what you need to keep up with all the best players." Although expectations are low for the Leafs overall, Kadri is entering this season with plenty to prove. He's coming off of a rough campaign where he recorded 39 points in 73 games and received a pair of suspensions, including one by the Leafs for disciplinary reasons. He has the potential to be a great player, but he'll turn 25 on Oct. 6, so talk of his potential is going to start to die out. At some point in the not too distant future, he'll start to be assessed purely based on what he's shown rather than what he was once pr Sep 1 - 10:18 AM

The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed Nazem Kadri to a one-year contract extension.

The deal is worth $4.1 million. Kadri's numbers were down last season as he scored 18 goals and 21 assists in 73 games. Kadri gets a short-term deal, so he will have to prove himself to new head coach Mike Babcock. He has the skill to be a top-six forward, but like many young players, he needs to show more consistency.

Forward Nazem Kadri missed practice Sunday after being sent home by interim coach Peter Horachek for being late, reports say.

Kadri showed up Sunday at the Maple Leafs' training facility, but not on time. Shortly after he arrived, Horachek told him to leave for being late and not prepared to practice. "He missed a meeting, so I sent him home," Horachek was quoted as saying. The coach added that he has yet to decide if Kadri will play Monday against the New York Islanders. "He is available ... if I want him," Horachek said. Kadri has 16 goals and 20 assists in 64 games for Toronto this season.

The 24-year-old does have four points in his last three games, but going seven games without a goal is inexcusable for someone who plays as many minutes as Kadri does. The Leafs forward has 15 goals and 34 points in 58 games this season. He averages just over 17:30 for the Leafs this season.
