Simon Despres has been a pleasant surprise on the Ducks blueline since his trade from Pittsburgh at the trade deadline.
Despres had the winner on Thursday but his solid play since the March 2 trade has impressed his teammates. "When you don’t expect much from a guy because you didn’t know the guy, it was a great surprise for everybody," fellow defenseman Francois Beauchemin said. "He was the steal of the deadline, that’s for sure. In the last few years I don’t know if there’s a guy that was traded at the deadline that’s made such a big impact on a team as he did. It was just a great move by Murph (GM Bob Murray)." May 23 - 6:06 AM

Simon Despres scored the game-winning goal in Anaheim's 2-1 victory over Chicago Thursday night.

"I was surprised it went in actually," Despres said. "It just stayed on the ice. I just wanted to get it on net, quick release. I was definitely happy it went in." It was his first goal of the 2015 playoffs. He also has six assists in 12 games though, which is great given that he's more of a defensive defenseman.

Simon Despres picked up two assists on Tuesday in a 4-3 overtime loss to Calgary.

He had a hand in goals by Corey Perry and Matt Beleskey. Despres has posted four of his five helpers this postseason in his last four appearances. He has amassed 24 hits in seven playoff matches, while averaging 18:35 of ice time per game.
May 6 - 10:07 AM

Simon Despres took Saturday off practice as a maintenance day.

The defenseman is expected to practice on Monday as the Ducks will not practice Sunday. Despres has been a nice surprise since Anaheim dealt for him at the deadline. He is worth looking at in deep drafts next season as a 5-6 defenseman. The Ducks will take on the Calgary Flames in one Western Conference semi-final matchup.
Apr 26 - 6:10 AM

Simon Despres has been a pleasant surprise for the Anaheim Ducks.

The Ducks acquired Despres from Pittsburgh at the trade deadline and his steady play in the first round of the playoffs surprised many as he was solid defensively against Winnipeg and chipped in with a couple of assists in four games. "The first game we got him, he was much better than I thought he was," coach Bruce Boudreau said. "I was thinking we were getting a raw, fairly green guy. And he came right in and had composure. Was physical. Did all the right things. He did it again in the series, really well. I was wondering near the end of the season whether he was coming down to earth a little bit. He was really good against a team that we really needed him to be good against." The former first round pick in 2009 is only 23 and could be a big part of the Ducks blueline for many years to come.
Apr 25 - 6:51 AM

Defenseman Simon Despres was quite emotional when he spoke to the Pittsburgh press on Friday.

Despres was dealt from Pittsburgh to the Ducks on Monday and as it happened the Penguins made their only trip to Anaheim on Friday, so the the trade was still very fresh in Despres' mind. "It's been very hectic," Despres said. "I wasn't expecting this. I've just been trying to focus on hockey." Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau has been impressed with the play of Despres so far. "He's a big young man," Boudreau said. "He's physical. And he can make plays, too. So, there's a lot to like about him. He's been very good with the puck, hasn't made any panic turnovers. He might be nervous tonight playing against his old boys. But so far, he's been very good." Despres is not much of a scorer as he has only two goals and 16 assists this season but he gets a lot of hits.
Mar 7 - 9:08 AM

Simon Despres had a strong debut with the Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday.

Despres was acquired from Pittsburgh on Monday in exchange for Ben Lovejoy. He had an assist and plus-three rating in 20:23 minutes of ice time in his first game with the Ducks. "He's a big, strong kid," Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau said. "And I know he plays with an edge. I watched the Columbus game the other day. Sidney (Crosby) got hit, and he went right after the guy. That's good. We need that ilk of a player." Despres has 189 hits in 60 games in 2014-15.

The Anaheim Ducks have gotten Simon Despres from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for Ben Lovejoy.

Despres has two goals and 17 points in 59 games in 2014-15. The 23-year-old blueliner might have some fantasy value in standard leagues in a season or two, but we wouldn't expect too much from him in what's left of the 2014-15 campaign.
Mar 2 - 3:11 PM

Devils' goaltender Cory Schneider shut the door on the Penguins for most of the night, but Chris Kunitz was able to beat him with under four minutes remaining to tie the game at 1-1. Mon, Dec 22, 2014 10:59:00 PM

Simon Despres returns to the Pittsburgh Penguins lineup against the New York Islanders on Saturday.

Despres is an interesting peripheral producer: in 17 games played, he has five points, 38 PIM, 53 hits and 23 blocked shots. Considering the quality of his team (+25 for his career), there are worse pick-and-pop options, though you're unlikely to need a quick defenseman add today.
