Kris Letang has been mentoring fellow defenseman Simon Despres.
Despres is expected to make the final roster of the Penguins as he'll have to clear waivers if he does not crack the lineup and it's unlikely that the Penguins will get to keep him. "He's been here for a while, so I'm trying to help him out," Letang said of Despres. "In my mind, he's a really good NHL player. He's got all the assets to become one of the best. He's one of the guys who I'm going to take care of, for sure." Despres played 34 games last season, picking up four assists. Look for a bigger season in 2014-15 as he should get 20-25 points. Simon Despres needs to clear waivers before being sent to the minors.

That could help his chances of staying with Pittsburgh this season. Shoulder injuries to Olli Maatta and Derrick Pouliot increase Despres' shot at a roster spot as well. He signed a two-year, $1.8 million contract in July. Despres averaged 16:44 of ice time per game with the big club last season in 34 contests and he posted five assists.
Aug 7 - 10:12 AM

Simon Despres has inked a two-year, $1.8 million contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

It appears Despres' deal is one-way and if that's the case then he's a safe bet to make the team's opening game roster. He had five assists and 26 penalty minutes in 34 games with Pittsburgh in 2013-14.
Jul 18 - 5:36 PM

Simon Despres will get a chance to crack the Pittsburgh lineup for the 2014-15 season.

Despres was not a favorite of the recently-fired head coach Dan Bylsma and with Matt Niskanen, Deryk Engelland and Brooks Orpik unlikely to return to the Pittsburgh lineup, the former first round pick will be given every opportunity to win a job on the Penguins blueline. "Without a doubt," associate GM Jason Botterill said. "You saw how he played in the playoffs in Wilkes-Barre. It was a great step in the right direction. He went down there with a better attitude. He was very physical. I think he enjoyed playing. It's been a difficult situation for our defensemen because of the depth that we have."
Jun 29 - 10:46 AM

Simon Despres has been sent to the minors.

Despres has five assists in 34 games with Pittsburgh in 2013-14. He'll aide AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in its playoff run.
Apr 15 - 10:42 AM

Simon Despres was a healthy scratch against the Chicago Blackhawks S.unday

Just an FYI. He has five assists in 31 games this season, as well as a plus-five rating.
Mar 31 - 10:17 AM

Simon Despres was a healthy scratch on Sunday.

The Penguins decided to dress Robert Bortuzzo instead and he earned an assist in Pittsburgh's 4-3 loss. Despres hasn't picked up a point in his last 12 NHL outings.
Mar 17 - 10:31 AM

Simon Despres might stick with the Penguins for the remainder of the 2013-14 campaign.

Despres was called up largely because Kris Letang and Paul Martin are both sidelined, but the Penguins are also upbeat about how he's done in the minors this season. "His play in the American league speaks for itself," Penguins assistant coach Todd Reirden. "He's gone down with a great attitude and a commitment to playing Penguins hockey. All the reports — and we've had quite a few of them during the Olympic break — were very strong for him to be the first guy who gets called up here." Despres has six goals and 22 points in 34 AHL games.
Feb 25 - 11:04 AM

The Pittsburgh Penguins have recalled Simon Despres from the minors.

The Pens are hurting on the blueline yet again as Kris Letang is out after suffering a stroke and Paul Martin was injured at the Olympics. Despres had four points in 18 NHL games during a previous stint this season in Pittsburgh but we cannot recommend him at this time.
Feb 24 - 8:08 AM

Demoted defenseman Simon Despres is still in the future plans of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Despres was demoted when defensemen Paul Martin, Kris Letang and Robert Scuderi returned to action, giving the Pens too many blueliners. "Where he is right now, in terms of his career, he's in a good spot," GM Ray Shero said. "In terms of the progression he's made and his maturity, on and off the ice, I think that's coming. Even though he's not [in the NHL now], we still believe he's a very good prospect for us and will be an NHL player, for sure." The 22-year-old was the Penguins first round pick and 30th overall in the 2009 Draft. He has six goals and eight points in his last 10 AHL games.
Jan 26 - 9:29 AM

Simon Despres has been returned to the minors.

Despres has four points in 18 games with Pittsburgh this season. The Penguins' blueliners are getting healthy, which prompted this adjustment.
Jan 17 - 10:04 AM

The Pittsburgh Penguins have called up Simon Despres.

Despres has 11 points and 21 penalty minutes in 17 games with the AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins this season. He was taken with the 30th overall pick in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.
Wed, Nov 27, 2013 09:43:00 AM

Simon Despres has been sent down to AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

Despres had seven points and 20 penalty minutes in 33 games last season. This is a surprising fall for Despres, who was called a top-four defenseman by Penguins coach Dan Bylsma in June.

Simon Despres has been dealing with an illness early in training camp.

It has led some to believe that he was out of shape because he lagged behind in conditioning drills, but coach Dan Bylsma said that is not the case. "When we started camp, Simon was in a situation where I would say almost 100 percent of the time during the regular season he would not have practiced," Bylsma said. "He didn't want to take that out… to his credit, he battled through what was probably the toughest day. He got through Day One, and I'm pretty happy he did do that."
Sat, Sep 14, 2013 09:44:00 PM

Pittsburgh Penguins head coach Dan Bylsma called Simon Despres a "top-four defenseman."

Some might find this prognostication strange since Bylsma decided to scratch Despres in favor of marginal blueliners like Dave Engelland, but perhaps this is more of a long-term assessment. Of course, a potential different coach might feel more (or less) highly about Despres anyway, if a change comes to pass.
