Carter Ashton registered his first goal of the year Toronto's 5-4 win over Hamilton on Friday night.

Ashton may not have the highest offensive upside, but he does have the makings of being a solid NHL regular. He has two points on the season and was pointless in his 15-game cup of coffee in the NHL last year.

With winger Mike Brown gone for possibly 10 days with a deep thigh bruise, after falling heavily into the boards in Pittsburgh on Wednesday, Maple Leafs rookie Carter Ashton likely will play tonight on a line with center David Steckel and right winger Joey Crabb.

The 6-foot-3, 20-year-old Ashton, from Saskatoon, will play in his second NHL game and first at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto since being acquired from Tampa Bay for defenseman Keith Aulie at the trade deadline. Toronto coach Randy Carlyle said he was impressed by Ashton’s first NHL game. The first-round draft pick had 19 goals with Norfolk and scored the 20th AHL goal of his rookie season in his Marlies’ debut before being called up. Ashton made his NHL debut in Pittsburgh. "He looked like a rookie at times. I put him in the starting lineup so he could get over the jitters right away," Carlyle said. "I was just praying the Penguins weren’t going to put the (Evgeni) Malkin line out there right away."

Carter Ashton, a first round pick in the 2009 draft, hopes to make a play for a spot on Tampa's third line.

With the departure of Simon Gagne, Steve Downie will likely line up on either Vincent Lecavalier's or Steven Stamkos' line leaving a vacancy on the Bolts' third unit. Ashton scored 33 goals in WHL last season and has the size (6'3") and the demeanor to be a power forward. Keep an eye on him during the exhibition season.

The Lightning signed first-round pick Carter Ashton to a standard three-year entry level contract on Friday.

First-round pick Carter Ashton was returned to his junior team in Lethbridge on Friday.

The 19-year-old winger, who impressed Vinny Lecavalier while playing on the same line in a few pre-season games, will likely be a fantasy factor in a few years. It's just not Ashton's time.

Carter Ashton will play wing on Tampa's top line with Vincent Lecavalier and Alex Tanguay.

Ashton was selected in the first round, 29th overall, in this summer's entry draft. The youngster has impressed through camp thus far and this will likely be his moment to secure a roster spot. Steve Downie, Stephane Veilleux and Richard Panik have also been tried in that spot. Whomever wins this contest, will have significant fantasy value. Although it looks like it could be a revolving door early on until something sticks. It appears the line of Steven Stamkos, Martin St. Louis and Ryan Malone will remain together to start the season.

The Tampa Bay Lightning are very happy with their second first round pick Carter Ashton.

"He's one of those guys that just has a nose for the net. He knows where to be and has an idea of where the puck is going to squirt out," assistant coach Wes Walz said. "He understands body position, and I was goofing around with him a little bit the other day in front of the net and you can feel, even for 18 years old, that he is strong on his skates. You don't have to ask him twice not to leave the front of the net.I just think the way he plays is going to be very conducive to being a good, solid NHL player." He is still a few years away from making the NHL.
