Islanders prospect Calvin de Haan is looking to get a head start in his off-season training program.

de Haan was limited to just 34 games this season because of a shoulder injury. However, he'll try to bounce back next season and he's already begun working with the Islanders' strength and conditioning coach, Jesse Demers. de Haan is arguably the Islanders best prospect and he might enter training camp with a real shot of making the team. He's worth keeping an eye on.

The New York Islanders defended their surprise selection of Calvin de Haan with the 12th pick overall.

De Haan was not projected to go that early in the draft and some argue that the Islanders would have been better served to take power forward Zach Kassian to play alongside Tavares. "We felt Calvin de Haan has more upside and potential to be that breakout, power-play quarterback defenseman," assistant GM Ryan Jankowski said. "Zach Kassian is a very good player, but at this point, Calvin de Haan was just better for us, and we think he has a very high upside." It will be a while before we know if the Islanders gamble will pay off. De Haan could still use a couple more seasons in the minors before breaking into the NHL.

The Islanders have selected Calvin De Haan with the 12th overall pick in the 2009 entry draft.

Minnesota traded away the 12th overall pick to the Islanders for the 16th, 77th, and 182nd picks overall. The Islanders then surprised everyone by going off the board and selecting De Haan. He is a talented offensive defenseman who excels when his team is playing with the man advantage. De Haan is a great skater, but he's lacking physically. He has significant offensive upside but not many people saw him being taken this early in the entry draft.
