Calvin de Haan was hoping to sign a long-term contract with the New York Islanders over the summer, but ultimately ended up with a one-year, $3.3 million deal.
"I got a one-year deal that wasn’t really up to me," de Haan said. "I love being here, it’s a great organization, we get treated well. We’ll see what happens throughout the season. It’s too early to tell about the future, but I’m here for another year and I’m happy about that." Islanders GM Garth Snow noted cap considerations when explaining why the team ultimately just renewed de Haan for another season rather than locking him up. de Haan, who had five goals and 25 points in 82 games last season, can become an unrestricted free agent this summer unless the Islanders re-sign him. He also ranked fourth in the NHL with 190 blocked shots. "Calvin is a home-grown product of the organization and has developed into one of our top defensemen during his time with the organization," GM Garth Snow said. "He plays important minutes for our club and we're excited to have him back for one more year." The 26-year-old defender will be eligible for unrestricted free agency at the end of the 2017-18 season.

Calvin de Haan was not protected on Sunday but he is likely to remain a New York Islander.

The reason is that a deal is likely in place between Vegas and the Isles to send the Golden Knights the 15th overall pick in exchange for the expansionists not selecting de Haan, Ryan Strome and Brock Nelson from the Islanders non-protected list. Calvin de Haan is a restricted free agent and is coming into his own after being the 12th overall pick in the 2009 Entry Draft.

Calvin de Haan picked up a couple of assists in a 6-3 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday.

de Haan has a respectable 23 points in 76 games this season but is far off the offensive numbers the Islanders were hoping to get when they made him the 12th overall pick during the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. His assists came on goals by Cal Clutterbuck and Jason Chimera.

Calvin de Haan left Monday's game with an undisclosed injury and didn't return before the end of the game.

As expected, Calvin de Haan (lower body) returned on Monday after missing four consecutive games.

De Haan was absent for nine contests over the stretch of 11 games, but he said his more recent stint on the sidelines was largely for precautionary reasons. "It hasn’t been ideal, but the training staff’s been good and they’ve been understanding, and so have the coaches," de Haan said. "Sometimes this stuff takes a little longer to heal up. We’re in a good position right now and they want me to be healthy for the playoffs." De Haan has two goals and 10 points in 58 contests in 2015-16.

Calvin de Haan (lower body) will be back in the lineup on Monday night.

Brian Strait will take a seat in the press box, so that de Haan can play in his first game since Mar. 3. He has 10 points in 57 games this season and doesn't do much fantasy wise, but his return will help the Islanders defensively.
