The Pittsburgh Penguins and Chicago Blackhawks are no stranger to outdoor games, but Saturday's contest at Soldier Field will still be a first for some players.

Nick Leddy can be counted among those that hasn't experienced an outdoor game before. "It reminds me of the pond in my back yard when I was younger," Leddy said. "My dad would always be icing, making sure it was always smooth for us. It brings me back to my younger days. You're letting the wind hit your face, it's definitely a different atmosphere." This is Chicago's second outdoor contest and Pittsburgh's third.

Nick Leddy plays on Chicago's third defense pairing, which means his partner changes nearly on a nightly basis.

The Blackhawks rotate Mike Rozsival, Sheldon Brookbank and Michael Kostka as their sixth defenseman. Rozsival has occupied the spot the most this season. Leddy was asked if it's tough for him to adjust to the different styles of each defense partner, but he said it's harder for them to stay focused and ready each outing knowing that two of them won't be playing.

Nick Leddy is playing much better hockey this season.

He is really beginning to blossom and has been more effective shooting and joining the rush this campaign. Leddy has five goals and 18 points in 41 games and is well ahead of his pace last season in almost all offensive categories. If Leddy is available on your wire, grab him.

Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Nick Leddy is suddenly becoming more than just a promising blueliner lost in the Hawks' high-end shuffle.

Leddy has eight points in 14 games, which is already fairly promising. That makes him especially worth monitoring is how well he's played in the last four games. In that time, he has two goals and three assists for five points, a bit chunk of his season total. He's not getting a ton of TOI so this might be a matter of puck luck, though.

Nick Leddy, who was born in the state of Minnesota and drafted by the Wild, will be plenty motivated Saturday and Monday of this week when the Blackhawks play back to back games against his former team.

Leddy has been steady this season registering three points and a plus two rating in 10 games. Those who drafted him expecting a breakout, will likely be disappointed as he still plays behind Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook. That said, Leddy is progressing nicely. He is a perfect fantasy depth defenceman.

Nick Leddy displayed some on-ice chemistry with Patrick Sharp on Saturday.

Sharp assisted on both of Leddy's goals. "Sharpie makes a great play, all of a sudden Nick jumps in the gut and anticipates a nice pass," Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said, describing one of the goals. "He has a good shot. Especially when you’re in the middle of the ice, just fire and might get action off (the shots)." Leddy is a solid offensive defenseman and could end up with 35-40 points in 2013-14.

Nick Leddy scored twice and added an assist as the Blackhawks edged the Capitals 4-3 in overtime of their preseason finale Saturday night.

The defenseman had 18 points in 48 games last year and could get 35-40 points in a full campaign, with a good amount of those coming on the power play. Jimmy Hayes and Andrew Shaw (game-winner, plus an assist) potted the other markers. Nikolai Khabibulin struggled, making just 12 saves in the win. Mikhail Grabovski recorded a goal and an assist, while Marcus Johansson and Joel Ward notched the other goals for the Caps. Braden Holtby allowed four goals on 36 shots.

Coach Joel Quenneville likes the puck-handling skills and mobility of defenseman Nick Leddy.

"That's the strength of his game, when he evades that first guy and comes with speed on that attack," Quenneville said after Chicago's 3-2 shootout loss to Pittsburgh on Monday. "He had a couple of nice looks in overtime and on a power-play entry or two. He's dynamic when he has that element in his game. It's a great asset to have, and utilizing it more often is what we're looking for." Leddy registered 18 points and a plus-15 rating in 48 games last season, but he saw his ice time diminish in the playoffs. It's expected that he'll get back on track this season.
