Richard Panik is starting to gain back some confidence during his latest NHL stint with the Lightning.

"He's way more assertive, he's using his body, his speed and he's not turning pucks over as he did a little more regularly in the past and he's playing the 200-foot game," coach Jon Cooper said. "There is nothing wrong with his game. Ever since he went back to the minors and found himself and the Olympics — and he was really good in the minors — he's done what we wanted him to do up here." Panik has two goals and 11 points in 41 games with Tampa Bay this season.

Richard Panik got back in the lineup Tuesday after he was a healthy scratch for Tampa Bay's previous two games.

He logged 5:29 of ice time in the contest and picked up a five-minute major for boarding on Washington defenseman Karl Alzner. The Capitals scored two goals on their ensuing power play, so don't be surprised if Panik ends up back in the press box.

Tampa Bay coach Jon Cooper wants Richard Panik to shoot more.

"And if you polled the guys, he's probably a top-three shot on our team and he needs to use it," said the Lightning bench boss. "I think he gets caught in that wants to make an extra pass, like so many players do, and in this league you can't do it, you don't have the time. The opportunities to score are minimal and when you get there you have to take advantage of it." Panik has no goals, five assists and a team-worst minus-9 rating. He's played on the second and third lines this year, but of late he's skating on the fourth unit with Nate Thompson and B.J. Crombeen.

Richard Panik registered two assists on Saturday.

Panik was pointless in his first three games of the 2013-14 campaign. He still has just 29 games worth of NHL experience under his belt and he's a big gamble this season. He's not a bad guy to have in keeper leagues though.

Richard Panik, Ondrej Palat and Tyler Johnson were used as a line in the AHL and coach Jon Cooper has used them together during training camp.

The trio helped lead the Tampa Bay Lightning's AHL affiliate to consecutive Calder Cup championship appearances and a title win in 2012. "You split them up and they are good hockey players and they still do well," Cooper said. "But when they are together, there is just something about them and some sort of magic kicks in. They can do some pretty special things." All three of them are gunning for roster spots with the Lightning this year and they could make for an interesting line at the NHL level if they get the chance.
