Edmonton Oilers GM Steve Tambellini believes goaltender Olivier Roy could develop into an NHL starter.
When referring to Roy, Tambellini stated he feels the netminder "has the potential to be a number No. 1 NHL goalie". For his part, Roy likens himself to certain NHLers that have taken a more circuitous route to success, comparing himself to Tim Thomas and Jon Quick. "There are goalies that teams want to rush and they put them in the National Hockey League, but there are goalies who have taken a longer route with success. Like Tim Thomas (retired for this season, but likely coming back) and Jonathan Quick," said Roy. "I really like how Quick did it. He learned the process in the East Coast, then in the American League, and he proved that he could play a high-tempo game night after night." Sun, Oct 21, 2012 08:48:00 AM

Date:

Olivier Roy is slated to share time in the crease this season with Yann Danis at the AHL level.

He spent most of the 2011-12 campaign with Stockton of the ECHL, where he posted a 16-18-5 record with a .925 save percentage and a 2.49 goals-against average. Roy also performed well in three AHL appearances with the Oklahoma City Barons last year. He might get a chance down the road to show that he can be the Oilers' goaltender of the future, but he'll probably have to wrestle that distinction away from fellow prospect Tyler Bunz and current netminder Devan Dubnyk.

Goaltender Olivier Roy has signed a three-year/entry level deal with the Edmonton Oilers.

Roy played with the Canadian juniors this season and started in goal for the QMJHL's Acadie-Bathurst Titan as he had a 29-13-2 record with a 2.79 GAA and a .911 save percentage in 45 games in the Q. He will need at least a couple of seasons in the minors before he is ready to challenge for a spot on the Oilers roster.
