Winnipeg has called up goaltender Edward Pasquale from AHL St. John's.

Al Montoya had to leave Tuesday's game due to a lower-body injury and the Jets brought up Pasquale on Wednesday to take his place. In 36 games for the IceCaps this season, Pasquale has posted a 14-19-2 record, 2.63 goals against average and .912 save percentage.

Edward Pasquale has posted decent statistics in the AHL this season with St. John's.

He has recorded a 2.42 goals-against average and a .924 save percentage, including two shutouts, in 16 appearances this campaign. His play improved after speaking with Jets goaltending coach Wade Flaherty. "I'm a big guy, so I take up a lot of the net," Pasquale said. "But it seemed like I was just overplaying situations. He told me to just relax, let my skill take over, that I'm here for a reason." He's trying to stay focused on just stopping pucks now rather than what could wait around the corner for him once the lockout ends. Pasquale hopes to compete for Ondrej Pavelec's understudy job in the near future.

Edward Pasquale will have to earn his starts with the St. John's IceCaps this season.

He is expected to see competition in the crease from off-season signing Mark Dekanich. Pasquale had to battle with David Aebischer and Peter Mannino the year before, so he's used to the drill. "I've done this my whole career," he said. "With every team, you're going to battle. When you're younger, it's harder to accept but now that I've gone through it a couple years, (you realize) it's part of the game. It's a good competition. We're going to battle for the starts and it's going to help the team out." He posted a 23-13-1 record with four shutouts, a 2.41 GAA and a .911 save percentage in 38 games last season, but said that he won't feel any added pressure to perform for fear of losing his number one status. "Whatever coach does and whatever coach says, you have to take it and be a good teammate," he said. "If he's in net, I'll be supportive and if I'm in net, he'll support me."

Jets goaltending Eddie Pasquale looked good during the AHL St. John's IceCaps' playoff run.

"He really built confidence and showed he can play in pressure situations and excel," said IceCaps head coach Keith McCambridge. "He made a real strong push for himself in the back half of the season. He earned the chance to run with it and be the guy we were going to lean on in the playoffs." Pasquale had a 2.42 GAA and .923 save percentage in 15 postseason contests. He's bounced back nicely from a rocky 2010-11 campaign.

The Atlanta Thrashers are impressed with goaltending prospect Edward Pasquale.

Pasquale, the Thrashers fourth round pick, 117th overall in the 2009 draft was signed to an entry level deal in May. "He was brilliant [during the season] but in the playoffs, he was the best goaltender in the OHL easily," GM Rick Dudley said. "I watched him play three games and he was the first star all three games." Pasquale played for Saginaw in the OHL last season, where he posted a 27-17-5 record with a 3.17 goals-against average and .916 save percentage. He will return to the OHL this season and the Thrashers hope he will challenge for the top job in Atlanta in four-five years.
