Dylan Olsen will play for the Rockford IceHogs during the NHL lockout.

Olsen played 28 games in the NHL last season and had a real chance to break training camp with the Blackhawks, but with the current lockout, he will get a chance to play a lot of minutes in the AHL and be NHL-ready once the league resumes action.

Dylan Olsen is hopeful that he can earn a roster spot out of training camp.

"I've taken in what they told me to work on," he said. "Hopefully I can prove to them I'm ready for that position come September." Olsen, who has been improving his skating and shot over the summer, suited up in 28 games with the Blackhawks last season and he appeared in 44 with the team's AHL affiliate in Rockford. If Chicago can swing trades with either Steve Montador or Niklas Hjalmarsson involved then Olsen's chances of sticking in the NHL would get better.

Dylan Olsen has been called up by the Chicago Blackhawks.

Olsen has seven points and 44 penalty minutes in 44 AHL games this season. He might have a long career in the NHL, but he isn't expected to ever have much fantasy value.

Dylan Olsen, the Chicago Blackhawks' first round selection (28th overall) in 2009, is determined to graduate from prospect to productive NHLer.

At 6-foot-3, 220-pounds Olsen certainly has the physical attributes to play in the NHL. Dylan benefited greatly from playing a year and half with Minnesota-Duluth before finishing last season with the Rockford IceHogs. The 20 year old prospect's maturation process was guided by the high level of competition and coaching expertise of the AHL and NCAA.

Chicago has inked its 2009 first round pick Dylan Olsen to a three year contract.

Olsen will join Rockford of the AHL immediately after the end of the World Junior Hockey Championships. He had been playing NCAA hockey for Minnesota-Duluth. He has no fantasy value for this season.

Chicago GM Dale Tallon has been impressed with the play of Dylan Olsen.

Olsen was the Blackhawks top pick in the 2009 Entry Draft, 28th overall. "He's got great mobility, and he can skate," Tallon said. "We've got so much depth back there. They all can skate and move the puck." Olsen will attend Minnesota-Duluth this season and is still at least 3-4 years away from contributing to the Chicago blueline. He will eventually be a good offensive defenseman in the NHL, but again, that is more than a few years down the road.

Dylan Olsen is a well-traveled hockey player thanks to his father, Darryl.

Darryl Olsen played one game in the NHL for the Calgary Flames in 1991-92 campaign and went on to play in Boston, San Diego, Houston, Italy, Austria, Britain and Germany. He concluded his career in Corpus Christi, Texas, in 2000. "My dad played hockey all over the world, so we moved all over the world when I was young," Olsen said. "Growing up he took me everywhere with him. I'd always go to the rink with him for practices and I'd pretty much do what he did. I just had a love for the game and that's all I wanted to do. Now being drafted in the first round is huge." He is scheduled to attend Minnesota-Duluth next year, so he is still another year or two away from joining the pro ranks.

The Blackhawks took Dylan Olsen with the 28th overall selection.

The Blackhawks went somewhat off the board with this pick - most mock drafts had Olsen going somewhere the middle of the second round. He's a puck-moving defenseman that will attend Minnesota-Duluth next season. Due to academics, he wasn't able to get into the University of North Dakota, which means he won't likely spend too long at school before beginning his professional career.
