Matt Martin has been named a finalist for the 2016 NHL Foundation Player Award.
The award is given "an NHL player who applies the core values of hockey; commitment, perseverance and teamwork, to enrich the lives of people in his community." Martin is perhaps the most unique of the trio nominated as he raised over $75K for the Matt Martin Foundation, which works in conjunction with several charities including, NYPD Widows' and Children's Fund, the Boomer Esiason Foundation for Cystic Fibrosis, ACDS, Defending the Blue Line and the Islanders Children's Foundation. Mighty impressive in his foundation's inaugural season. Martin would be the first Islanders player to win the award, which is an additional $25K. May 3 - 8:06 PM

Matt Martin scored in Sunday's 5-2 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers.

The loss means that the Islanders will open the postseason against the Florida Panthers. Martin's goal gave the Islanders a 2-0 lead in the first period, but their inexperienced lineup wasn't able to hold on. This was Martin's first game back since suffering an upper-body injury last week. The injury kept him out for a total of two games.

Matt Martin will indeed play in Sunday's season finale against Philadelphia.

Martin missed the two previous games due to an upper body injury, but should have no problem finding proper work for himself against the Flyers. He's posted a career high of nine goals and 18 points this season, along with 119 PIMs and a league-leading 365 hits in 79 games. Wow.

Mar 6 - 9:18 AM

Matt Martin made a lot of fantasy players happy during Thursday's 2-1 overtime win over Calgary.

Martin dropped the mitts twice Brandon Bollig, collected two hits, and picked up an assist. That's classic 80's power forward production right there. Martin is now up to eight assists, 15 points, 87 PIMs and 279 hits in 59 games this season.
Feb 26 - 12:21 AM

Matt Martin dished out an impressive 10 hits in Saturday's 4-0 loss to the Flyers.

Matt Martin has a goal and four points in 18 games this season.

Matt Martin had an assist in the Islanders' 4-0 win over Columbus Tuesday night.

It was Martin's first point in six games this season. He's not going to chip in much offensively in 2015-16, but if your league values hits then Martin is worthy of note as he typically dominates that category. He already has 31 hits this season.

New York Islanders winger Matt Martin easily leads all NHL skaters in hits since 2012-13, the most recent lockout.

Martin has delivered 974 hits in 205 games played. He's the only player who cleared 800 hits in that time frame, as Cal Clutterbuck comes in at 768, the only other player above 700. Martin is also a source of PIM (114 in 2014-15, 561 in 358 career games), so he could be a somewhat-interesting utility consideration if you can stomach the loss in traditional stats.
