Matt Martin and Erik Gudbranson dropped their gloves Saturday night to settle a score from November 5th.
It was inevitable that Martin and Gudbranson would tussle after the two had harsh words following an incident in a November 5th game in which Martin went after Canucks' rookie defenseman Troy Stecher. For his part, Martin seems to think the subjec is closed and had the following to say about Gudbranson after Saturday night's fight. "I have a lot of respect for him ... He wears his heart on his sleeve. He's a guy I'd have in my corner any day." Dec 4 - 11:44 AM

Matt Martin isn't concerned about the threats that were made the last time the Canucks and Maple Leafs squared off.

The two teams will face-off in Vancouver tonight. The last time they played, Martin dropped the gloves with the inexperienced Troy Stecher. Erik Gudbranson, who was tossed in that game, said that Martin was "dead" the next time they met. "I’d say both teams got caught up in the emotions of that game," Martin said Friday. "It’s sports, it’s hockey. After the games are done, you try to let them go as fast as possible. But people will hype this game up, it’s going to be talked about. It’s going to run its course (on Saturday), but we’re focused on winning and making this a successful road trip. Games get emotional sometimes and that was the most emotional game for us this season."

Matt Martin scored his first goal with the Maple Leafs on Wednesday night.

He gave Toronto a 4-3 lead going into the third period, but New Jersey ended up winning the game in the shootout. Martin has contributed three points in 20 games this season.

Nov 24 - 8:43 AM

Matt Martin leads the NHL with 76 hits in 17 games.

That is nothing new for the former Islanders winger. Martin has topped the league in hits in each of the last five seasons. He was credited with four body checks in Thursday's win over Florida.
Nov 18 - 8:55 AM

The Maple Leafs are expecting Matt Martin to help protect their younger players on the ice.

"I don’t know what word you call it, but it is certainly support for (the kids) to feel freer to do the things they do best," GM Lou Lamoriello said. "Certainly, he has size and strength and we feel his skating is very good. I’ve had the experience of (his New Jersey) teams play against Matt a good number of years. Our staff liked him, our coaching staff liked him and that was the most important thing." Martin had 10 goals, 19 points, 119 penalty minutes and a league-leading 365 hits in 80 games with the Islanders last season.

Jul 3 - 11:32 AM

Matt Martin has inked a four-year, $10 million contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Martin might not bring a lot to the table offensively, but when it comes to a willingness to play physically, he's among the top of the league. He had 365 hits in 2015-16, which was the NHL's best by a margin of 61. Don't be surprised if he and Auston Matthews end up starting the season on the third line together so that the promising youngster has someone on the ice tasked with defending him.
Jul 1 - 3:44 PM

The Detroit Red Wings and New York Islanders are no longer in pursuit of Matt Martin.

It's not clear how many teams are still going after Martin, but one of them is believed to be the Toronto Maple Leafs. Martin is a gritty forward best known for dishing out a ton of hits, including 365 in 2015-16.
Jul 1 - 3:02 PM

Forward Matt Martin, who almost certainly will become an unrestricted free agent July 1, is hoping his role expands with whichever club signs him.

In the Martin Sweepstakes, reportedly, are Detroit, Toronto, Montreal, Boston, Los Angeles, Calgary and the Rangers. "The money's the money," Martin said Wednesday. "Obviously you want to secure yourself financially. It's important obviously in life. But for me it's just the opportunity. I started my career here (with the Islanders), I've grown a lot as a player. I appreciate everything this organization has done for me. But I think every player wants to expand a little bit. Obviously I'd like to penalty kill and be a little more involved in the games. Sometimes it can be hard just playing 5-on-5. You don't get into the game all the time, especially in a special-teams league. But those are opportunities you've got to create for yourself. We'll see what other teams want to offer." Martin scored an NHL career-best 10 goals playing on the Isles' fourth line but his value is based primarily on the fact that he led the NHL in hits with 365.

Matt Martin has been drawing interest from a number of teams.

The pending unrestricted free agent has reportedly been contacted by Detroit, Toronto, Montreal, Boston, Los Angeles, Calgary and the Rangers. Martin led the NHL in hits last season with 365, while posting 29 points and 119 penalty minutes.
Jun 28 - 5:59 PM

Expect to see Matt Martin hit free agency on July 1.

Apparently there are no negotiations on-going between Martin and the Islanders. Martin had 10 goals and 19 points last season with 119 penalty minutes. His real value in fantasy is in the hits category as he has led the NHL in each of the last five seasons, picking up 365 in 2015-16.
Jun 19 - 8:51 AM

Matt Martin is eligible for unrestricted free agency in the summer.

He has led the NHL in hits for five years in a row. Martin contributed 10 goals, nine assists and 119 penalty minutes in 80 games in 2015-16, while racking up 365 hits. He would prefer to re-sign with the Islanders rather than test the open market.
May 16 - 9:16 AM

Matt Martin has been named a finalist for the 2016 NHL Foundation Player Award.

The award is given "an NHL player who applies the core values of hockey; commitment, perseverance and teamwork, to enrich the lives of people in his community." Martin is perhaps the most unique of the trio nominated as he raised over $75K for the Matt Martin Foundation, which works in conjunction with several charities including, NYPD Widows' and Children's Fund, the Boomer Esiason Foundation for Cystic Fibrosis, ACDS, Defending the Blue Line and the Islanders Children's Foundation. Mighty impressive in his foundation's inaugural season. Martin would be the first Islanders player to win the award, which is an additional $25K.

Matt Martin scored in Sunday's 5-2 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers.

The loss means that the Islanders will open the postseason against the Florida Panthers. Martin's goal gave the Islanders a 2-0 lead in the first period, but their inexperienced lineup wasn't able to hold on. This was Martin's first game back since suffering an upper-body injury last week. The injury kept him out for a total of two games.
Apr 10 - 10:10 PM

Matt Martin will indeed play in Sunday's season finale against Philadelphia.

Martin missed the two previous games due to an upper body injury, but should have no problem finding proper work for himself against the Flyers. He's posted a career high of nine goals and 18 points this season, along with 119 PIMs and a league-leading 365 hits in 79 games. Wow.
Apr 10 - 6:17 PM

Matt Martin (upper body) did not participate in the Islanders 4-1 victory of the Rangers on Thursday night.

Despite skating before the game on Thursday morning, Martin was held out of the lineup for precautionary reasons. He's still considered day-to day. Martin has nine goals and 18 points in 79 games this season.
