Mar 4 - 10:50 AM

Look for Matt Martin (lower body) to resurface with the New York Islanders on Sunday.

Martin has been out since the Olympic break. He's resumed practicing, though, and it looks like he's ready to return. The Isles like Martin in their lineup because of his physical play. He leads the NHL in hits, with 275. He has four goals and four assists in 60 games this season.
Mar 1 - 10:33 AM

Right winger Matt Martin (lower body) has not been practicing with the New York Islanders and is doubtful to be in the lineup when they begin their post-Olympic schedule against Toronto on Thursday.

Martin, the NHL leader in hits with 275, might resume practicing by next week.
Feb 22 - 10:30 AM

Matt Martin didn't skate at Wednesday's practice due to a lower-body ailment.

We'll list him as day-to-day for now, but it's probably likely that he'll be ready to go when the NHL goes underway following the Olympic break. Martin leads the league with 275 hits in 60 games this campaign.
Feb 19 - 3:35 PM

Matt Martin scored a goal in the Islanders' 5-3 win over the Rangers on Tuesday.

Martin is known primarily for his physical play and it's rare to see him contribute offensively. He has three goals and seven points in 52 games this season.
Jan 22 - 10:16 AM

Matt Martin netted his first goal of the 2013-14 campaign on Tuesday.

Martin typically doesn't do a lot offensively and that's not likely to change this season. What he's known for is his physical presence. Martin led the league with 234 hits last season and has already been credited with another 24 in six contests in 2013-14.

Matt Martin leads the NHL in hits with 216.

Bet that wasn't your first guess as to who is the top body checker in the league. Martin is therefore very valuable in pools that count hits as a category. Of course if you are in such a pool, you probably knew that already.

Matt Martin scored the game-winning goal for the Islanders as they defeated the Lightning 4-2 on Saturday night.

We highlight him not only because of the game winner but because it's not often the penalty-minute/fighting machine (54 penalty minutes) finds the twine (number two on the year), and Saturday night, he did it to keep the Islanders in a playoff position. Martin also had eight hits in the game. Michael Grabner, Josh Bailey, who also had an assist, and Andy MacDonald (empty-netter) potted the other markers.

Matt Martin notched a goal and an assist for the Islanders in a 6-3 win over Montreal Tuesday night.

The NHL's hit leader from 2011-12 was also credited with six hits in the match. Martin has only three points in 23 games this campaign. Colin McDonald had a goal and an assist in the contest, while the usual suspects of John Tavares and Matt Moulson also scored a goal each in the win. Tavares also had an assist.

Matt Martin had 10 penalty minutes in the Islanders' 7-0 loss on Monday.

As you can probably guess based on the score, Martin was about the only Islanders' player worth starting in fantasy leagues this afternoon. He participated in two fights, one against the Flyers' Wayne Simmonds and another versus Braydon Coburn.

Matt Martin enjoyed a strong game for the Islanders on Monday afternoon.

He posted a goal, two shots, seven penalty minutes and was credited with one hit in the team's 4-3 win over Tampa Bay. Martin dropped the gloves with B.J. Crombeen one second into the first period. At the same time, Islanders defenseman Joe Finley fought with Tampa's Pierre-Cedric Labrie. Martin led the league in hits last year and he does rack up PIMs as well, so he can be beneficial to a fantasy team if your league promotes rough play.

Matt Martin isn't angry at Islanders owner Charles Wang over this lockout.

"I can't speak for all my teammates, but I don't think there's any ill will toward Charles or Garth [Snow, the Islanders' GM]," Martin said. "There could be some guys around the league who'll feel differently, I would imagine, given the negotiations and the contracts that were signed. But I think our guys know this is a business, and when it's time, our job is to play hockey. That's what we want to do." Wang hasn't been one of the more openly active owners during this lockout. Players on teams like Boston might feel a bit more awkward immediately following the lockout because Bruins owner Jeremy Jacobs is seen as one of the more actively hardline owners, but even then, the players are likely to put that behind them once they have a CBA and play hard for their team.

Matt Martin signed a four-year, $4 million with the Islanders on Saturday night.

The tough guy had just 14 points in 80 games last season, but he did collect 121 penalty minutes and lead the league with 374 hits.
Sat, Sep 15, 2012 11:26:00 PM

Matt Martin leads the NHL with a whopping 349 credited hits this season.

"To lead the league in anything is kind of a big accomplishment," Martin said. "I just try to play the same way every night, just finish all my checks when I can." The statistical category varies from arena to arena and it has been known to be inaccurate at times, but it gives Martin some additional fantasy value to go along with his 109 penalty minutes and 14 points.
