Matt Martin hopes to stay with the Maple Leafs even though he could be exposed in the upcoming expansion draft.

I love it there." Marin inked a four-year, $10 million contract with Toronto as a free agent prior to the 2016-17 season.

Jan 1 - 8:29 PM

Matt Martin and Erik Gudbranson dropped their gloves Saturday night to settle a score from November 5th.

It was inevitable that Martin and Gudbranson would tussle after the two had harsh words following an incident in a November 5th game in which Martin went after Canucks' rookie defenseman Troy Stecher. For his part, Martin seems to think the subjec is closed and had the following to say about Gudbranson after Saturday night's fight. "I have a lot of respect for him ... He wears his heart on his sleeve. He's a guy I'd have in my corner any day."

Matt Martin isn't concerned about the threats that were made the last time the Canucks and Maple Leafs squared off.

The two teams will face-off in Vancouver tonight. The last time they played, Martin dropped the gloves with the inexperienced Troy Stecher. Erik Gudbranson, who was tossed in that game, said that Martin was "dead" the next time they met. "I’d say both teams got caught up in the emotions of that game," Martin said Friday. "It’s sports, it’s hockey. After the games are done, you try to let them go as fast as possible. But people will hype this game up, it’s going to be talked about. It’s going to run its course (on Saturday), but we’re focused on winning and making this a successful road trip. Games get emotional sometimes and that was the most emotional game for us this season."

The Maple Leafs are expecting Matt Martin to help protect their younger players on the ice.

"I don’t know what word you call it, but it is certainly support for (the kids) to feel freer to do the things they do best," GM Lou Lamoriello said. "Certainly, he has size and strength and we feel his skating is very good. I’ve had the experience of (his New Jersey) teams play against Matt a good number of years. Our staff liked him, our coaching staff liked him and that was the most important thing." Martin had 10 goals, 19 points, 119 penalty minutes and a league-leading 365 hits in 80 games with the Islanders last season.

Matt Martin has inked a four-year, $10 million contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Martin might not bring a lot to the table offensively, but when it comes to a willingness to play physically, he's among the top of the league. He had 365 hits in 2015-16, which was the NHL's best by a margin of 61. Don't be surprised if he and Auston Matthews end up starting the season on the third line together so that the promising youngster has someone on the ice tasked with defending him.

The Detroit Red Wings and New York Islanders are no longer in pursuit of Matt Martin.

It's not clear how many teams are still going after Martin, but one of them is believed to be the Toronto Maple Leafs. Martin is a gritty forward best known for dishing out a ton of hits, including 365 in 2015-16.

Forward Matt Martin, who almost certainly will become an unrestricted free agent July 1, is hoping his role expands with whichever club signs him.

In the Martin Sweepstakes, reportedly, are Detroit, Toronto, Montreal, Boston, Los Angeles, Calgary and the Rangers. "The money's the money," Martin said Wednesday. "Obviously you want to secure yourself financially. It's important obviously in life. But for me it's just the opportunity. I started my career here (with the Islanders), I've grown a lot as a player. I appreciate everything this organization has done for me. But I think every player wants to expand a little bit. Obviously I'd like to penalty kill and be a little more involved in the games. Sometimes it can be hard just playing 5-on-5. You don't get into the game all the time, especially in a special-teams league. But those are opportunities you've got to create for yourself. We'll see what other teams want to offer." Martin scored an NHL career-best 10 goals playing on the Isles' fourth line but his value is based primarily on the fact that he led the NHL in hits with 365.
