T.J. Brodie was thrilled to be invited to join Team Canada for the upcoming World Championships by GM Steve Yzerman.
Brodie grew up a Red Wings fan and a Steve Yzerman fan to boot so the phone call meant a lot to the 21-year-old defenseman. "It's sort of weird watching him growing up and being so close to Detroit and stuff," Brodie said. "To talk to him on the phone is sort of a weird feeling, I guess. Watching your idol and getting to talk to him it's a cool experience." A fourth round pick in the 2008 Draft, Brodie had two goals and 14 points in 47 games while averaging over 20 minutes of action per game. He is worth a selection late in deep pools next season. Coach Bob Hartley has been really impressed with the play of rookie defenseman T.J. Brodie.

Brodie had two assists on Saturday and was the first star of the game against the Flames hated rivals, the Edmonton Oilers. "He's just amazing," Hartley said. "He has so many skills. Like his skating is just sick." Brodie has only one goal and 11 points in 40 games this season but he has a spot on the top power play and has three assists in his last two games. He looks like a sleeper in next season's pools unless you live in Calgary or are a big Flames fan.

T.J. Brodie is enjoying the increased ice time with the Calgary Flames.

Brodie is averaging a career-high 19:24 minutes per contest, but he's also logged at least 22 minutes in each of his last five games. "It’s nice," Brodie said. "The more you play, if you make a bad pass or something, it’s a lot easier to forget about it if you go out the next shift. You don’t have to sit on the bench and think about it, and then the next time you’re out there, you’re a little bit nervous, because you don’t want to do it again. I think playing a little bit more, it’s definitely a little easier." His role increased after the Flames traded Jay Bouwmeester. The Flames don't have much left to play for this season, but Brodie is a key part of their future so they might as well give him as much playing time as possible.
Apr 10 - 8:50 AM

T.J. Brodie is continuing to see big minutes on the blueline for the Calgary Flames.

Brodie was on the ice for 24:14 Monday, third on the team behind Dennis Wideman and Mark Giordano. Brodie has a goal and eight points for the Flames with a minus-11 rating but the second year Flame has impressed the upper management with his steady play. We cannot recommend him in traditional pools but he is a better hockey player than fantasy player in the NHL.

T.J. Brodie has a goal and six points in nine AHL games.

Brodie has been getting a ton of playing time and he has a lot of potential. For now though, Abbotsford Heat coach Troy Ward is hoping Brodie can play a bit more of a simple game and learn when to play it safe. "That has to come from me and come from coaching," Ward says. "You have to guide these guys into when’s the right time and when’s the wrong time. The only way you can go through that is through good and bad experiences — both individually and as a team." He might serve as a bottom-two defenseman for the Calgary Flames if the lockout ends in time to save the 2012-13 campaign.

T.J. Brodie is getting plenty of playing time with the AHL Abbotsford Heat.

That must be a nice change of pace for Brodie after he logged an average of 16:28 minutes per game with the Flames last season. He's expected to get called up after the lockout, but he'll probably serve on Calgary's third defensive pairing.

T.J. Brodie, who played 54 games for the Flames last year, assisted on three goals in the Abbotsford Heat's 6-2 win over Peoria Saturday night.

By staying afloat in the NHL last year, Brodie proved he has a bright future ahead of him. This year gives him a chance to fine-tune his game even further in the AHL.

T.J. Brodie understands he has to work hard to land a roster spot with the Flames, so he will attempt to improve his game in the minors during the NHL lockout.

The 22-year-old said there are aspects of his game that he needs to work on. "I just want to get better at reading the play and finishing plays," he said. "When I get a chance to score, I need to take advantage of it. If I see a pass, I need to make it, and I need to jump up in the rush — but pick my spots. It's all about reading the play." The Flames have eight defensemen on one-way contracts, so he'll be hard-pressed to earn a spot, but he does possess some offensive talent. Brodie notched 14 points and averaged 16:28 of ice time in 54 appearances with Calgary last season.

T.J. Brodie participated in the morning skate on Thursday for the first time since suffering a concussion on March 9.

The defenseman will not play again in the NHL this season with the Flames only having one more game on their schedule but it was good for him to get back on the ice. "I've never had (a concussion) before. I feel good for a couple of days, would try to do something, then feel bad after that and had to go back and take a couple of days off again," Brodie said. "I just want to get healthy. I feel pretty good. Still not cleared yet, but definitely feeling better than I was." He will be back for the start of training camp in September.

T.J. Brodie will not play Sunday against the Wild.

He sustained an upper-body injury Friday night in the Flames' 5-3 win over Montreal and did not make the trip to Minnesota. Consider Brodie day-to-day. Look for Anton Babchuk to draw back in against the Wild.

T.J. Brodie was the only Calgary Flame to be even in a 9-0 shellacking at the hands of the Boston Bruins Thursday.

Brodie led the Flames in ice time playing 24:57 minutes, making the achievement even more amazing. Chris Butler was a horrid minus-seven and if he was in your lineup, it was not a good night for your fantasy team unless you loaded up on Bruins.

T.J. Brodie scored his first NHL goal on Sunday.

Brodie now has three points in eight games this season. He does have some offensive potential, but we're not convinced he'll live up to it this season. For now, we can't recommend picking him up in standard leagues.

T.J. Brodie picked up the first point of his NHL career on Friday.

Brodie was recalled from the minors on November 9 and played three games last season for the Flames but when he assisted on Lee Stempniak's opening goal, it was the first time his name was on the score sheet for scoring. Brodie is a good passer and has a big shot so he has some offensive potential. He had two goals and 29 points in the AHL last season and a goal and two assists in 10 contests this season. He is a fringe fantasy player in only the deepest of pools.

Calgary has brought up defenseman T.J. Brodie from the minors.

He has registered a goal, two assists and 10 penalty minutes in 12 games with Abbotsford in the AHL this season. Brodie skated in three games with Calgary in 2010-11.

T.J. Brodie needed to make some adjustments during his first year as a professional.

Brodie was drafted in the fourth round of the 2008 Entry Draft and the defenseman managed to score five goals and chip in with 29 assists with Abbotsford of the AHL. But his toughest time came with former coach Jim Playfair who tended to yell when making his point. "Some guys, it's hard to deal with that," Brodie said. "Instead of improving your game, it can get your confidence down, that type of thing, thinking you're always doing something wrong. The biggest thing they were on me about was the defensive zone. Sometimes, I'd get too excited and just lunge for pucks. A guy comes in and beats me and he's got a clear path to the net." Brodie has a lot of NHL skills including his shot, speed, vision and his passing ability. Brodie will eventually play on the power play for the Flames and will have some fantasy value down the road.
