Mar 21 - 1:52 PM

Joe Vitale (wrist) was activated from the injured reserve on Thursday.

Vitale suffered the wrist injury on January 11. He played 10:46 minutes and was minus-one with a two minute minor for tripping. Vitale has only one goal and 13 points in 45 games so his fantasy value in traditional pools is negligible.
Feb 28 - 1:45 AM

Joe Vitale skated for the first time with his teammates on Sunday since he injured his wrist on January 11.

Vitale said he was out of shape and it's likely he will not be in the Pittsburgh lineup when the Penguins play on Thursday. He should return next week barring any setback. He has only a goal and 13 points in 44 games so he is not a viable fantasy pick in traditional pools.
Feb 24 - 8:29 AM

Joe Vitale (wrist) is expected to miss the next three weeks.

Vitale sustained the injury during Friday's contest. He has a goal and 13 points in 44 games this season.
Jan 14 - 10:22 AM

Joe Vitale missed Saturday's game with a wrist injury.

Vitale suffered the injury Friday against the Oilers in Edmonton. He has a goal and 13 points in 44 games this season. Consider him day-to-day for now.
Jan 12 - 9:49 AM

Joe Vitale skated with Sidney Crosby and Chris Kunitz during Friday's morning skate.

The Penguins have been hit hard by the injury bug, so Vitale could get a shot to open Friday's contest on the top line. He has one goal and 10 assists in 37 games this campaign, while averaging 10:43 of ice time. Vitale could be worth keeping an eye as a short-term fix, but this could be a revolving door-type situation where a number of wingers get tried out until players get healthy.

Joe Vitale scored his first of the season Saturday.

His goal gave the Penguins a 2-0 lead and it turned out to be the game winning goal. Despite the goal, Vitale has no fantasy value.

Joe Vitale's previously undisclosed injury was a possibly broken nose.

Vitale will probably never know with complete certainty if his nose was broken during a fight on Sunday because he hasn't had an X-Ray. Either way, he left Sunday's preseason contest as a result, but was back on the ice Tuesday. Vitale also doesn't regret getting into the fight. "It's one of those things where it's kind of nice to get the first one out of the way," he said. "Get right back into it."

Joe Vitale left Sunday's preseason contest early to be observed after participating in a late-game fight.

It's not clear if the Penguins were exercising an abundance of caution or if Vitale is dealing with something potentially significantly. Consider him day-to-day until more information surfaces.

Joe Vitale is a healthy scratch Friday night for the Penguins.

Vitale has played the past two games, getting just over 10 minutes of ice time. He's notched one assist in the playoffs over six games. Tyler Kennedy rejoins the lineup in his place.
Fri, Jun 7, 2013 08:17:00 PM

Joe Vitale got back into Pittsburgh's lineup in Game 2 against Boston.

He played with Jussi Jokinen and Craig Adams on the team's fourth line. Vitale is a strong faceoff contributor and he plays physical as well, which helps him match up well against the Bruins. He had one shot and a minus-1 rating, with three hits, during his 11:03 of ice time.
Tue, Jun 4, 2013 09:49:00 AM

Joe Vitale didn't play Sunday or Wednesday because of his lack of success on faceoffs and not because of a "health thing."

Vitale said Wednesday he had "a hiccup" to a previous lower-body injury, but that's not the reason why he's currently watching his teammates from the press box. Coach Dan Bylsma has not been pleased with Vitale's work in the faceoff circle in Round 2, as he won only 9 of 21 draws in Games 1 and 2.
