Matt Calvert has been moved up to the second line for Tuesday's game.
Calvert will play alongside Oliver Bjorkstrand and Nick Foligno. While that's good news for Calvert, he tends not to do much offensively, so we're hesitant to recommend picking him up, even at this time. Sonny Milano is shifting from the second to third line as a result of this move. Oct 17 - 9:00 AM

Matt Calvert hopes to build off his showing in the 2017 playoffs.

Calvert had 10 goals and 15 points in 65 contests in 2016-17 and followed that up with a goal and an assist in four playoff games. "I want to do what I did in the playoffs last year," Calvert said. "I want to play at that level all year long. That’s what I’ve been working on all summer. I want to be a difference-maker." We could see Calvert doing better offensively than his did in the 2016-17 regular season, but not by much. If he ends up with 20-25 points then that wouldn't be surprising.
Sep 22 - 9:48 AM

Matt Calvert will be back in the lineup in Game 4 on Tuesday night.

He has finished serving his one-game suspension for a cross-check on Pittsburgh's Tom Kuhnhackl. "I obviously regret the play," Calvert said. "I let down my teammates and wasn't able to help them (Sunday). It's what happened. There's no sense in me commenting on it now. We have to get ready for Game 4." Columbus will try to avoid being swept by the Penguins on Tuesday.
Apr 17 - 5:39 PM

The NHL has announced that Matt Calvert will be suspended one game for cross-checking Penguins forward Tom Kuhnhackl during Game 2.

Calvert broke his stick over Kuhnhackl’s back before tossing him to the ice with approximately 30 seconds remaining in Game 2. Reports broke earlier in the day that the Department of Player Safety didn't consider the play warranting suspension but after a phone hearing and further review it was ruled that one game is enough discipline.
Apr 15 - 9:16 PM

The NHL Department of Player Safety has announced that Matt Calvert will have a phone hearing for his cross-check to the back of Tom Kuhnhackl during Game 2.

ESPN's Pierre LeBrun tweeted earlier today that he expects Calvert to only be fined because the DOPS deemed Calvert's stick to break too easily. The Blue Jackets didn't make Calvert available to the media at the end of practice.
Apr 15 - 2:07 PM

According to Pierre LeBrun of ESPN, the sense is that Matt Calvert is expected to avoid a suspension for his cross-check to the back of Tom Kuhnhackl at the end of Game 2.

LeBrun gets the sense that the department of player safety feels like Calvert's stick broke easily and the cross-check wasn't as malicious as it appeared. It is looking more and more like Calvert will get away with cross-check at the cost of only a fine. A few Penguins players will likely have a few words for him when they meet up for Game 3 on Sunday.
Apr 15 - 12:09 PM

Matt Calvert's mugging of Pittsburgh's Tom Kuhnhackl in the final minute of Game 2 may be looked at for supplemental discipline by the league.

Calvert broke his stick over an unsuspecting Kuhnhackl. He followed that up with a knockdown of the Penguins forward while he was bent over in pain. Calvert was assessed a minor penalty for cross-checking on the play.
Apr 15 - 10:28 AM

Matt Calvert scored a goal in Wednesday's 3-1 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The Blue Jackets outshot the Penguins 16-3 in the first period, but the two teams went into the first intermission tied 0-0. The Pens bounced back in the second by scoring three straight goals. Calvert eventually broke Marc-Andre Fleury's shutout with less than eight minutes remaining in the third frame. The Blue Jackets will look to even the series in Pittsburgh on Friday night.
Apr 12 - 10:36 PM

Matt Calvert pitched in a goal and an assist in a 3-2 victory over Toronto on Sunday.

Calvert finishes the year with 10 goals and 15 points in 65 games. It's his lowest output in five years, but he'll see post-season action.
Apr 9 - 11:48 PM

Matt Calvert will be a healthy scratch in Tuesday's game against Pittsburgh.

Calvert has missed some time because of an oblique injury, but he still hasn't found the back of the net since Feb. 15. He has just nine goals and four assists in 62 games. Lauri Korpikoski will also watch the game from the press box.
Apr 4 - 7:10 PM

Matt Calvert (oblique) has been taken off the injured reserve list.

That sets the stage for Calvert to return on Monday after being out for nearly a month. He has nine goals and 11 points in 51 contests this season.
Mar 13 - 12:21 PM

Matt Calvert (oblique) has been moved to the injured reserve list.

Feb 27 - 2:29 PM

Matt Calvert (oblique) is reportedly expected to be sidelined for two weeks.

Calvert was listed as week-to-week, so by that basis a two-week absence would sound like a best-case scenario. He has nine goals and 11 points in 51 contests in 2016-17. Markus Hannikainen has been summoned from the minors as a result of the injury.
Feb 25 - 4:49 AM

Matt Calvert has been sidelined with a strained oblique and is considered week-to-week with the ailment.

Through 51 games this season the veteran winger has posted 11 points along with 42 PIMs and hits, while seeing less than 14 minutes per game on average. He suffered the injury in Sunday's match with the Predators.
Feb 24 - 3:04 PM

Matt Calvert scored the lone goal for the Devils in a 5-1 loss to Columbus on Saturday night.

Left Winger Calvert scored his eighth goal of the season Saturday night against the Blue Jackets. Most importantly, Calvert’s goal came while two of his teammates were serving penalties, making this Calvert’s third shorthanded goal of the season. Boone Jenner was in the box for tripping and Brandon Dubinsky for misconduct at the time.
