The broken finger suffered by Matt Calvert typically comes with a 2-4 week recovery timeline.

The Blue Jackets haven't offered any official word about his condition, but if that timeframe holds his season is very likely over. It's an unfortunate turn of events for the forward who had been very productive of late, recording 16 points in 42 games while also serving as one of the team's primary penalty killers. Reserve him immediately.

Although they're a bit of a long shot to make the playoffs, the Blue Jackets are excited to even be in the running this late into the season.

"We know we're not out of the race yet," Matt Calvert said. "We're going to keep on battling each game. We've shown that all year that we're going to stick with it." Columbus has eight games left with six of those contests being on the road. That's not great for a team that still has ground to make up, but at the same time it's amazing for a squad that was projected to finish in dead last this season.

It was a bit of a surprise as heading into the shortened training camp, Calvert was not favored to make the team. But his play forced him into the lineup alongside Jared Boll and Derek McKenzie. Matt Calvert admits that he was having confidence problems last season, but now he sees it as a learning experience.

Calvert had 11 goals and 20 points in 42 games with the Columbus Blue Jackets as a rookie in 2010-11, but he struggled last season, in part because he suffered a groin injury during training camp. It also frustrated him when players started to get called up from AHL Springfield and he wasn't one of them, although he ultimately played in 13 games with the Columbus Blue Jackets last season. "The last 30 games (of last season) I just stopped worrying about getting called up," Calvert said. "I stopped being frustrated because I wasn't up there, and I started playing better." Calvert feels that his struggles last season helped him realize how much he still has to learn after dominating at the junior level. He has nine goals, 18 points, and a plus-13 rating in 28 AHL games this season.
