St. Louis winger Phillip McRae has decided to wear number 39 instead of number 38 this upcoming season.

He is making the switch to honour Pavol Demitra and Igor Korolev, two of the players who were killed in a plane crash in Russia nine days ago, and who both wore number 38 for the Blues. Nice gesture on McRae's part. One has to wonder if the number is a little cursed, though.

The St. Louis Blues’ top skilled prospect just might be Phil McRae.

McRae had a great OHL career, scoring 71 goals and 182 points in 249 games. While he personally feels his role could be as an enforcer in the NHL, his skills have begun to develop. He will be attending the Blues’ rookie tournament, then training camp in September. "My size and strength have been my biggest improvement," McRae said. "When I was drafted, I was a lot skinnier and slower and not as powerful. I've spent all three summers in St. Louis, working with (Blues strength coach) Nelson Ayotte, and that's really helped me."

The St. Louis Blues have decided not to have a prospects camp this summer and are currently in the midst of off-ice training.

Doug Armstrong, who will become the new GM of the Blues on July 1, decided not to have a prospects camp, and thought the off-ice training sessions would be a better idea. Fifteen Blues and prospects, Erik Johnson, T.J. Oshie, David Perron, Alex Pietrangelo, Ian Cole and Cam Janssen, are currently undergoing off-ice activities with strength coach Nelson Ayotte. Blues' second round pick in the 2008 Entry Draft, Philip McRae agrees. "Prospect camp is in the middle of the summer and no one is really in game shape," McRae said. "The camp that matters is training camp, so I think it's more important to work out off the ice and get stronger."
