Chad Johnson is shuffling back to Buffalo.
The Sabres have signed the underrated Johnson to a one-year, $2.5 million deal to be starter Robin Lehner’s backup next season. Johnson carried the Flames in the early part of the 2016-17 campaign while Brian Elliott was floundering and is a very capable number two. Jul 1 - 12:39 PM

Chad Johnson could be heading back to the Sabres.

Michael Russo of the Minneapolis-St. Paul Star Tribune is hearing that it's "very likely" that Johnson will sign with the Sabres. He had 22-16-4 record with a 2.36 goals-against average and a .920 save percentage in 45 games for Buffalo in 2015-16. Johnson played for the Calgary Flames last year and he was traded to Arizona in the off-season. He will be an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

Pending unrestricted free agent Chad Johnson has been traded from the Calgary Flames to the Arizona Coyotes.

Here's the whole trade: Arizona gets Johnson, Brandon Hickey and a conditional third-round pick for goaltender Mike Smith. If the Coyotes want to keep Johnson, they'll have to work out a new contract with him before he's eligible to hit the open market on July 1st. Johnson had an 18-15-1 record with a 2.59 goals-against-average and a .910 save percentage this season. The conditional third-round pick becomes a second-rounder if the Flames make the playoffs next season.

Chad Johnson had no issue accepting Team Canada's offer to play in the 2017 IIHF World Championships even though he is a pending unrestricted free agent.

"Some players don't do these types of things because they don't have a contract, because they don't want to risk injury," Johnson said. "I thought about that, but for me, these opportunities don't come very often. I love being a part of Canada, I love being Canadian, I love being part of Hockey Canada. So, for myself, to put on a Canadian jersey to play for Team Canada, it was a no-brainer for me ... I didn't think about it being something I have to do because of my contract situation. I think my body of work over the past two years speaks for itself." He would like to stay with Calgary, but he isn't sure what their plans for the crease are moving forward.

Chad Johnson, who becomes a UFA on July 1, wants to return to the Calgary Flames.

The Flames need goaltending as both Johnson and Brian Elliott are potential UFA's. Johnson was slated to be the Flames backup this season but carried them early on as Elliott really struggled. Johnson was 18-15-1 this season with a 2.59 GAA and a .910 save percentage so he certainly played a lot. "I want to be a 1A goalie," Johnson said. "I think I’ve proven I can be a 1B when I was given the opportunity I took that role and had that roll and did well. My goal is to be part of a winning team and to play and to contribute. I think I can do that here." Stay tuned.
Apr 23 - 7:40 AM

Chad Johnson will return to his post as backup goalie in Game 2 against Anaheim on Saturday.

He had been out with a lower body injury, though Brian Elliott was able to hold down the fort in his absence. Johnson is unlikely to see much time this postseason without Elliott falling apart first.

Chad Johnson (lower body) is expected to return to his backup role during the Flames' first round series with the Ducks.

"I'm expecting, sometime in this series, that he'll be backing up," coach Glen Gulutzen noted. This is good news for the Flames, and some reassurance for Brian Elliott.
Apr 14 - 6:53 PM

Chad Johnson (lower body) took part in Tuesday's practice.

Johnson is making progress, but he won't be available for Game 1. Once he's healthy, he'll probably serve as the Flames' backup unless Brian Elliott gets hurt or struggles significantly.
Apr 12 - 6:22 PM

Chad Johnson (lower body) didn't participate in Monday's practice.

The good news is that Johnson did get some on-ice work in prior to the Flames' morning skate. If he's not available for Game 1 then Jon Gillies will serve as the backup goaltender.
Apr 10 - 2:26 PM

Chad Johnson sustained a lower-body injury on Tuesday night.

He stopped the only shot he faced in 5:19 of ice time against the Ducks. Johnson has returned to Calgary for further evaluation, Jon Gillies is up with the big club to back up Brian Elliott.
Apr 5 - 1:06 PM

Chad Johnson will tend to the cage when Calgary visits Anaheim on Tuesday night.

Brian Elliott started five consecutive games for the Flames, including a 4-3 loss to the Ducks on Sunday. Johnson has recorded a mark of 18-15-1 this season with a 2.60 GAA and a .910 save percentage.
Apr 4 - 3:25 PM

Chad Johnson allowed three goals on just 17 shots in Thursday's 3-1 loss to the Nashville Predators.

With Brian Elliott playing so well, Johnson's starts have been few and far between. His performance in tonight's game won't help him get more games down the stretch. Johnson has an 18-15-1 record with a 2.60 goals-against-average and a .910 save percentage this season.
Mar 24 - 12:11 AM

Chad Johnson will probably tend Calgary's net on Thursday in Nashville.

In 34 games this season Johnson has posted an 18-14-1 record with a .912 save percentage and a 2.58 GAA. This would be only his fifth game since January.
Mar 23 - 4:41 PM

Chad Johnson gave up four goals on 32 shots and another went into an empty net as the Flames lost 5-2 to the Bruins.

The Flames were one win away from a franchise record 11 consecutive. Johnson was solid through in the first period and halfway through the second. He faced seven shots in the first and gave up only one goal. A 16-shot second gave the Bruins a 3-2 lead and then Johnson gave up one more on eight shots in the third. With a save percentage of .871, this was his eighth-worst game of the season.
Mar 16 - 12:01 AM

Chad Johnson will be between the pipes Wednesday against Boston.

Brian Elliott won't play because he is feeling under the weather. Johnson has won two of his last three appearances. He owns an 18-13-1 record with a 2.54 goals-against average and a .913 save percentage this season.
