Robert Bortuzzo was sent to the minors on Wednesday for a conditioning assignment.

He hasn't played since Feb. 28 and has dressed in just 11 games this season. "He has an opportunity to play three games starting [Wednesday] night and then Friday and Saturday," coach Dan Bylsma said. "He will be recalled."

The progress that Bortuzzo and Simon Despres have shown early into this season led to Lovejoy being traded Wednesday to Anaheim. Bortuzzo has posted one goal, one assist and a plus-5 rating in four appearances with the Penguins. He was a healthy scratch for the first six games, but has played in the team's last four outings. Bortuzzo didn't earn a point during that span, but he did post nine hits and a plus-1 rating while averaging nearly 11 minutes of ice time per game. He suffered a concussion last year that cut his action in the big league short.

Bortuzzo reported that he hasn't experienced any symptoms in about a week. That being said, we still wouldn't count on Bortuzzo returning on Friday or Saturday.

The Penguins called up defenseman Robert Bortuzzo from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (AHL) on Tuesday. He will paly tonight against the Rangers.

With Kris Letang (nose) and Zbynek Michalek (unspecified) sent home to Pittsburgh from New York today, the Pens summoned Bortuzzo and Alexandre Picard to fill the void on the blue line. Bortuzzo was called up earlier this month and made his NHL debut on Nov. 5, logging 10:38 with no scoring.

He logged 10:38 of ice time in Pittsburgh's 3-2 shootout victory during the first game of his NHL career. He received a two minute minor penalty for roughing in the contest. Bortuzzo missed all of training camp with a knee injury and recently returned to action with AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

Robert Bortuzzo is considered a long shot to make the Pittsburgh Penguins out of training camp, but he should see NHL action at some point this season.

"By the end of the year, I want to see this guy in some National Hockey League games," assistant general manager Jason Botterill said. "This year, [getting] National Hockey League games should be one of his goals, for sure." Bortuzzo skated in 75 games with Wilkes-Barre last season, compiling 12 points and 109 penalty minutes.
