Gunnarsson will still miss Thursday's game though. He suffered the injury on Saturday and couldn't play Tuesday. Robert Bortuzzo has been paired with Kevin Shattenkirk in Gunnarsson's absence.

Carl Gunnarsson will sit out the Blues regular season opener, along with fellow Swede Magnus Paajarvi and Ty Rattie.

The former Leaf blueliner struggled in the postseason under intense conditions, having faced extensive injury recovery time for hips and other ailments. Paajarvi dressed in 48 NHL games in 2015-16, and spotted into the lineup during the playoffs. Rattie has not played more than 13 games in the NHL, but injury to Jaden Schwartz and personal development have him ready for a full time role if he can grasp it. Rattie scored four goals in 13 games last season.

He had his first NHL fight earlier this season against Ottawa when he dropped the gloves with Max McCormick. on Saturday, he fought with Brenden Dillon even though he never got his left glove off in the scrum. Gunnarsson has contributed two assists and a plus-5 rating in 17 games this postseason.

He created a loose puck for Jaden Schwartz, who sent Vladimir Tarasenko on a breakaway to give the Blues a 1-0 lead. The play was unique because the Stars illegally had six men on the ice, but it went undetected by the officials so it wasn't blown dead. Gunnarsson has posted an assist in each of his last games.
