Marcus Foligno gave the Buffalo Sabres the lead for a minute and three seconds in the third period, but the Calgary Flames ultimately prevailed in a 4-3 OT decision Tuesday night.
The Sabres drew first blood in the first period with a goal by Zemgus Girgensons. They scored again in the second with Ryan O’Reilly, and finally with Foligno, but the cycling of goals came to a close with 15:08 remaining to play in the third. Foligno’s goal erased an earlier mistake as a turnover by him one minute and 29 seconds prior gave the Flames’ Michael Ferland a chance to score unassisted. Marcus Foligno will be a restricted free agent this summer and he feels he is deserving of an extension.

"I've been showing the coaches that they can trust me out there in crucial situations and the offensive side of my game is there," Foligno said. "I've got to bring that every night, and I feel like I have with the physicality of it, sticking up for teammates and things like that. I think the overall game, if I can bring something every night, you're going to be a factor. I've figured it out. This is the best I've felt and the most consistent I've played. Foligno now has 20 points in 64 games on the season, tying his career high. Foligno's goal, which tied the game at 2-2 at 11:56 of the third period, came while the Sabres were shorthanded. Buffalo also got a goal Wednesday from Zach Bogosian, who opened the scoring in the game on a power play at 15:17 of the first period.The Sabres (28-33-10) now have lost three of their past four games and can't wait for the off-season to begin.

Marcus Foligno was back on the ice for practice on Monday after missing Saturday's game versus Boston because of a leg injury.

"I just tried to hit a guy," he said. "He dodged it pretty good and I just kind of went forward and put too much of my weight into it and went down. I kind of got jammed up with his skate kind of going into me, and it's kind of a deep tissue bruise." Coach Dan Bylsma is hoping that Foligno will be ready to play Tuesday night against Florida.

My job is the same-old, just try to create space for him out there, make sure he feels comfortable and he can use his speed on the forecheck and on the rush." He has three goals and seven assists in 44 games this season, but playing with Eichel could give him a boost.
