Gustav Nyquist notched his third assist in the last five games Sunday night.

Unfortunately, he hasn't scored a goal since he had a pair against San Jose back on Oct. 22. "It's hard not to think about it, and that's no secret," Nyquist said. "And I think that goes for a lot of guys in this room, right now. You've just got to try to stay positive and work hard, and hopefully you get a goal and get going." He has scored three goals in 19 games this year, but he has contributed nine assists.

Gustav Nyquist has gotten off to a red hot start with three goals and seven points in six games.

The hope is that Nyquist can not only bounce back from his rough 2015-16 campaign, but also surpass his career-high of 54 points set in 2014-15. It's still very early, so his success thus far has to be taken with a grain of salt, but this would be a particularly good season for him to step up given that Detroit is adapting to life without Pavel Datsyuk.

Gustav Nyquist scored twice in the second period as the Detroit Red Wings shutout the San Jose Sharks 3-0 Saturday night.

Nyquist had a disappointing 2015-16 season with only 17 goals to his credit. He scored 28 in 2013-14 and 27 the following year. He got off to a slow start in 2015-16 to create questions about how he would fare. He had no goals and only three assists in his first four games. The Red Wings were experiencing problems across the board, and as they have begun to regain their composure, the rising tide is lifting all the ships in the harbor. After dropping two, the Wings are on a current four-race winning streak. Nyquist scored one goal and had an assist Friday night against the Predators.

Gustav Nyquist scored a goal and recorded an assist in a 5-3 win over the Predators on Friday.

The goal, his first of the season proved to be the game-winner for the Red Wings. His two point effort now gives him five points through five games for the Red Wings this season. After a sub-par 2015-16 season, he has really started the season strong with the intent of proving his doubters wrong. He's owned in only 58% of yahoo leagues, it might be time to consider picking him up if he is lingering on the waiver wire.

The only Detroit line that is producing any offense is the Gustav Nyquist-Darren Helm-Thomas Vanek unit.

In fact that line is responsible for three out of the four even-strength goals the Red Wings have tallied over their first two games, both losses. Detroit coach Jeff Blashill when asked about his team's play had this to say: "We need more than that [Nyquist line] top to bottom. It starts with getting out our zone and it puts the onus as a team to do a better job of getting out of our zone". Nyquist, Vanek and possibly Helm should be active in deep pools based on their performance to date.

Gustav Nyquist is excited to play with Thomas Vanek and Darren Helm this season.

"We seemed to find some chemistry," Nyquist said. "Helmer is a hard worker, can really fly, and Vanek is a smart, skilled player, knows how to score. You have to be ready when he's got the puck -- he's got great vision and playmaking ability, so try to get open." The trio was formed in Detroit's exhibition finale and they stayed together for Thursday's opener. Nyquist and Helm accounted for an assist each, while Vanek scored two goals in the Red Wings' 6-4 loss to Tampa Bay.

Gustav Nyquist had a goal and two assists in Wednesday's 5-2 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Nyquist opened the scoring 7:34 into the first period and he picked up assists on goals by Tyler Bertuzzi and Brendan Smith. The Wings are hoping from a bounce back season from Nyquist, after he scored 17 goals and 43 points in 82 games last season. The 27-year-old managed to score 27 goals two seasons ago.

"I'm just excited to get back at it and have a good bounce-back year," said Nyquist. "I didn't score enough goals last year and it's something I want to improve. Gustav Nyquist didn't get a spot on Sweden for the World Cup.

Nyquist just led the Swedes with seven goals at the World Championship tournament, but it wasn't enough to get him a roster position. Henrik Zetterberg and Niklas Kronwall were placed on Sweden in March when the preliminary rosters were announced.

Gustav Nyquist has taken an interest in horse racing lately as the Kentucky Derby winner was named Nyquist, after the Red Wings forward.

Nyquist, the horse, then placed third in the Preakness Stakes. "It’s cool. It’s different," Nyquist said. "I watched the race and like, calling a horse instead of my name on the ice, that was definitely different, for sure. It was an honor and a lot of fun to follow for sure." Nyquist, the player, was planning to go to Belmont Park to see the horse race, but now it appears Nyquist, the horse, won't be racing there, so the Red Wings forward hopes to see him another time. Meanwhile, Nyquist had a great showing in the World Championship to put a more positive ending on what had been a bit of a disappointing season.

Nyquist, who had a disappointing 2015-16 NHL season registering only 43 points, led the Swedes with five shots on goal in the tournament's opening game. Look for Nyquist to bounce back next season and become one of the Red Wings' leaders now that Pavel Datsyuk has retired.
