Newbury, along with five other teammates from the Whale, were called up strictly for depth in case an injury strikes one of the Rangers during the rest of the playoffs. The Devils lead the Eastern Conference finals 3-2 and can advance to the Stanley Cup finals with a win at home against the Rangers on Friday night. The Rangers were down 3-0 before the first period was half over, but Gaborik's goal tied the game at 3-3 only 17 seconds into the third period. The Garden rocked, but the Devils' Ryan Carter scored the game-winning goal late in the third and an empty netter by Zach Parise sealed the triumph. The veteran's goal was his first of the postseason and just his fifth playoff point. Though the third-period marker gave the Rangers a little bit of hope, New York was still down 3-1 at that point and was unable to make the game any closer. Del Zotto was playing in his first game since his grandmother passed away over the weekend and he saw just one shift in the second period. "It was a struggle for him," coach John Tortorella said. "He hasn't had many games like that this year. With the extra D we dressed, we just wanted to take a little pressure off him and let him watch for a bit."
