It looks like Carter Hutton wants to test the free agent market.
"Yeah, I don't blame him," Blues GM Doug Armstrong said. "We've had conversations. He understands that we'd like him to come back. I also understand that he had his career-best year at the proper time for him as an unrestricted free agent. He wants to maximize that and I certainly respect that. At the end of the day, he's a businessman that has to do what's best for his family." It might be more than just a question of money for Hutton. He's expressed an interest in becoming a starting goaltender and the Blues might not be the best opportunity for him in that regard, given the presence of Jake Allen, who still has three seasons left on his four-year, $17.4 million deal. Carter Hutton might find himself wearing a Detroit Red Wings jersey next season.

Hutton has spoken about wanting to be a starting goaltender next season but looking around the league, there aren't really any clear cut openings on any teams. The Red Wings have Jimmy Howard locked up for another year at $5 million, but could be a fit for Hutton. He played in 32 games this season, while posting a 2.09 goals-against-average and a .931 save percentage. It will be interesting to see if he could best Scott Darling's four-year, $4.125 million deal he got from the Carolina Hurricanes last off-season.

Carter Hutton hopes to become a starting goaltender next season.

Hutton is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer, so he has the option of seeing what the market is like for him. He certainly performed well enough this season to warrant a shot at a number one gig as he posted a 2.09 GAA and .931 save percentage in 32 games.
Apr 10 - 1:44 PM

Carter Hutton allowed one goal on 20 shots in Friday's 4-1 win over the Chicago Blackhawks.

Hutton blanked the 'Hawks through two periods, but he eventually allowed a third-period goal to Erik Gustafsson, which tied the game at one. The Blues eventually scored three more goals before the end of the game to win. Hutton now has a 17-7-3 record with a 2.09 goals-against-average and a .931 save percentage this season. The Blues need to collect just one point in their game against Colorado on Saturday to clinch a playoff spot.
Apr 6 - 11:19 PM

Carter Hutton will start for the Blues on Friday.

Blues coach Mike Yeo had previously said that Jake Allen would get this start, so this is an interesting change of plans. Allen might be dealing with an ailment as Ville Husso has also been called up and will serve as the backup goalie tonight. The Blues are one point behind Colorado for the final Wild Card spot with two games left in St. Louis' schedule (Colorado only has one game left), so every contest is vital. That being said, the Blues will play against Colorado on Saturday in an even bigger game, so it's possible that the decision was made to give Allen the night off entirely so that he would be fresh for that critical contest.
Apr 6 - 3:34 PM

Carter Hutton (neck) is ready to return to action.

Hutton didn't want to discuss specifics, but said he started feeling good a couple days ago and now he's ready to play when called upon.
Mar 26 - 2:34 PM

Carter Hutton (neck) skated at practice Thursday.

Hutton has been on the ice with his teammates just two times since March 8 because of a neck injury. "He's coming along," coach Mike Yeo said Thursday. "Another good day today. I don't know if this weekend is going to be a possibility for him to rejoin the group, but he's certainly getting closer."
Mar 23 - 11:45 AM

Carter Hutton had an MRI on his neck and its sounds like the results were encouraging.

They didn't find anything that would make Hutton's prognosis anything more than day-to-day. "It's just a matter of when he feels better and ready to get back on the ice," Blues coach Mike Yeo said. Hutton has a 2.02 GAA and .934 save percentage in 30 games this season.
Mar 16 - 4:01 PM

Carter Hutton (neck) didn't skate on Wednesday at practice.

Hutton felt uncomfortable when he got up this morning and will get looked at this afternoon. Depending on the results, the Blues may need to call up Ville Husso again.
Mar 14 - 1:41 PM

Carter Hutton (neck) skated on Monday.

While that's a good sign, he won't be available Monday night. Ville Husso has been summoned from the AHL to serve as the backup goaltender in his place.
Mar 12 - 3:15 PM

An update on Carter Hutton (neck) is expected to come Monday.

It's unclear at this time if he will be available to return when the Blues visit Anaheim, but coach Mike Yeo said the netminder was feeling better. Hutton hasn't been on the ice since the morning skate Thursday when he sustained a neck injury. If he isn't ready to return then the Blues will recall Ville Husso from the minors.
Mar 12 - 9:38 AM

Carter Hutton (neck) won't play in Thursday's game against the San Jose Sharks.

Hutton was supposed to start tonight, but he'll be forced to sit. Jake Allen will take his spot in the lineup. Hutton is day-to-day right now.
Mar 8 - 9:42 PM

Carter Hutton will probably start on Thursday.

Hutton was the first goalie off the ice following the morning skate, which is usually a good indicator of who the starter will be. He has a 16-7-3 record, 2.02 GAA, and .934 save percentage in 30 games this season.
Mar 8 - 3:53 PM

Carter Hutton stopped 31 of 34 shots in a 3-2 overtime loss to the Dallas Stars.

The Blues played well overall in this game but injuries to Jay Bouwmeester and Scottie Upshall led to them running out of gas towards the end of the game. Alex Radulov took advantage of a tired team to tie the game up with just under three minutes remaining in regulation. The loss drops Hutton's record to 16-7-3 with a 2.02 goals-against-average and a .934 save percentage.
Mar 3 - 5:55 PM

Head coach Mike Yeo has confirmed that Carter Hutton will be in goal vs. the Dallas Stars this afternoon.

Hutton turned aside 35 of 36 shots in Wednesday's 2-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings, breaking St. Louis' seven-game losing streak. Some would say the Blues would be smart to lean on Hutton down the stretch if they wish to make the playoffs. The 32-year-old goaltender will come into this afternoon's game with a 16-7-2 record, a 1.99 goals-against-average and a .935 save percentage.
