Defenseman Patrick Wiercioch is hoping to make things work this season as a member of the Senators.
The offensive-minded defenseman struggled to remain in coach Paul MacLean's lineup last year, having been a healthy scratch on 29 occasions, but that hasn't prevented him from putting down roots in Ottawa. "You can worry about it, but it's not going to do much good for you," he said. "We're realistic of the business, and we kind of know what we're in for. Unless you have a no-movement clause, you're in play. That's just the way it is. You've got to see if you do get traded, it's an opportunity, another team wants you. There's just a lot of great fans here in Ottawa, and my wife and I really enjoy it here. We want to continue our stay." The rearguard's offensive abilities have never been in question, making him a potentially valuable fantasy asset if he can carve out a regular role in the lineup. Aug 10 - 8:18 AM

Patrick Wiercioch registered another assist and had five shots in Wednesday's 2-1 loss to the New York Islanders.

He has earned four helpers, including three on the power play, in his past five games since returning from the press box. Wiercioch has been a healthy scratch frequently this season, but he's made the most of his recent string of appearances. Depending on how deep your league is, he could be worthy of a flier.
Apr 3 - 10:47 AM

Patrick Wiercioch has contributed three assists in his past four games.

He has suited up in Ottawa's last four contests after being a healthy scratch for eight consecutive matches. Wiercioch is trying his best to stay in the lineup and picking up points is a good way to accomplish that.
Apr 1 - 8:25 AM

Patrick Wiercioch got back in the lineup on Tuesday night.

He had been a healthy scratch for eight straight games. He collected a power-play assist and logged 15:23 of ice time in Ottawa's 3-2 shootout loss to Florida. Wiercioch also finished the match with a minus-1 rating and two penalty minutes. He got the opportunity to play because of an injury to Chris Phillips.
Mar 26 - 8:08 AM

Patrick Wiercioch has been a healthy scratch for seven straight games.

He has 17 points in 42 appearances this season. "In fairness to (Wiercioch), him, Gryba and Cowen as young defencemen in the league were expected to come in the league and we felt they were going to make strides and they didn't, at the start," coach Paul MacLean explained. "I think Cowen and Gryba have come a long a little bit better than Patrick has, but the play of Cody Ceci, coming up and being able to play in the league the way he has, is more of a factor with Patrick." He may play either Monday or Tuesday.
Mar 24 - 4:59 PM

Patrick Wiercioch could be in Ottawa's lineup Thursday.

He hasn't played since Mar. 5 and he has 17 points in 42 contests this season. Eric Gryba appeared to be the odd man out during the morning skate.

Mar 20 - 1:41 PM

Patrick Wiercioch scored a power-play goal in Ottawa's 7-2 loss against Boston on Saturday afternoon.

Feb 8 - 5:58 PM

Patrick Wiercioch will be a healthy scratch Saturday afternoon against Carolina.

He will sit in favor of Marc Methot. Wiercioch has been fairly effective from an offensive perspective when he has had the chance to play. Unfortunately for him and his fantasy owners, that has not been on a regular basis as the Ottawa coaching staff does not trust him sufficiently in the Sens' zone.

Jan 25 - 9:39 AM

Patrick Wiercioch picked up another power-play marker on Monday night.

He scored his first goal of the year last Thursday against Tampa Bay. Wiercioch has 11 points in 22 games and his improved play of late should help keep him in the Senators' lineup.

Patrick Wiercioch is hoping getting his first goal of the season on Thursday is a sign that his fortunes are changing.

"I wish it was coming in a winning cause, but if anything it's good just to get that out of the way," Wiercioch said. "You don't want to change too much, you don't want to be passing up shots, but you start second guessing yourself." It's worth emphasizing that Wiercioch has 10 points in 20 games this season, which obviously aren't bad numbers for a defenseman. At the same time, he has spent some time in the press box this season and that's happened as recently as Tuesday.

Patrick Wiercioch will draw back into Ottawa's lineup on Sunday.

Sat, Oct 26, 2013 03:22:00 PM

Patrick Wiercioch was a healthy scratch Wednesday.

"We just feel the speed of the game and getting the puck moving," coach Paul MacLean said. "The pace that he plays with needs to get better and using his feet and his size (6-5, 206 pounds) to defend better is a big part of it, as well." He has lost some power-play time, but he has contributed five assists in eight games this season.

Patrick Wiercioch is expected to get a look on Ottawa's top power-play unit in Thursday's exhibition game.

He is slated to play alongside Erik Karlsson in any man advantage situations that the Senators get against Toronto. Wiercioch is hoping that he can step up this season and get more involved offensively following the departure of Sergei Gonchar.
