Michael Hutchinson knows he has a lot to prove this season, as he enters training camp slated to be Winnipeg's backup netminder.
"I'm just going to come in and take it one day at a time and try and help the team win as many games as I can and just work hard every day," said the 24-year-old goalie. "I think it'll be great. We'll both be able to push each other. The main focus is to help the team win games and if we can both do that, we'll have a successful season." The AHL standout posted a 2-1 record with a 1.64 goals-against average and a .943 save percentage in three appearances with the Jets at the end of the 2013-14 campaign. Sep 16 - 6:35 AM

Michael Hutchinson and the Winnipeg Jets have agreed to a two-year contract that could pay him up to $1.15 million.

The reason why the exact amount Hutchinson will earn is unknown is because the contract is two-ways for the 2014-15 campaign. It will turn into a one-year deal for 2015-16 though. Even though the Jets will have more flexibility to demote him next season, Hutchinson is likely to start the season as the team's backup netminder.
Jul 2 - 4:49 PM

Michael Hutchinson has continued to impress in the AHL and his coach believes his time will come in the NHL sooner rather than later.

"Michael has done nothing but show that he's a goaltender that is knocking at the door at the National Hockey League level," St. John's coach Keith McCambridge said. The 24-year-old netminder has been solid during his AHL career and he's been great during the IceCaps' playoff run to the Calder Cup Final. He owns a 1.61 GAA and a .946 save percentage in the postseason. Hutchinson played well in three starts for the Jets at the end of the 2013-14 campaign and he could be a full-time NHLer next year. First, the Jets need to get the pending restricted free agent under contract.

Jets' goalie prospect Michael Hutchinson is playing very well in the AHL playoffs.

He is tending goal for the St. John's IceCaps in the Eastern Conference finals against Pittsburgh's top minor league team, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Hutchinson has a 10-4 postseason record with a 1.63 goals against average and a .945 save percentage. With the Jets' goaltending situation unsettled for 2014-15, Hutchinson may have an opportunity to start next season in the NHL.

Apr 12 - 4:50 AM

Coach Paul Maurice hasn't decided yet if Michael Hutchinson will get a third straight start in Winnipeg's season finale Friday night.

"We'll go back and talk and see how he's feeling. If you walked in right now he'd say, 'Why don't we just put all the equipment on again and go play another game.' He's just wired right now," said Maurice after Hutchinson picked up his first victory Thursday. "But we want to put him in a position to have success. At the same time, if he feels good he'll be in the net (Friday) night. He's earned that right. Back-to-backs are a different beast and we'll want to see him in that, too."

"He looked solid, square, comfortable and he gave his hockey team a chance to win the game," coach Paul Maurice said after a 1-0 loss to Minnesota. "I will think you'll see Michael one more time, maybe two. One more time for sure." Winnipeg hosts Boston on Thursday and they play in Calgary on Friday to close out the 2013-14 campaign. Hutchinson will be back in the AHL with St. John's for the playoffs afterward.

Mar 31 - 9:35 AM

The Jets have recalled Michael Hutchinson from St. Johns of the AHL.

He will back up Al Montoya while Ondrej Pavelec recovers from a lower-body injury that he sustained Friday night. Hutchinson is 24, so he is hardly a hot young prospect. That said, he has put up tremendous numbers in the minors this season. He sports a 15-5-1 record with a 2.33 goals against average and .923 save percentage. It will be interesting to see what happens if Montoya does not do well over the next two games and Pavelec is not ready to return. Does Hutchinson get a chance?
