Michael Latta suffered a lower body injury in the third period Sunday and did not return.

The good news is that coach Adam Oates expects him to practice Monday morning. Latta was recalled before the game Sunday. His value in fantasy pools is in the penalty minute category and he had a fighting major Sunday before the injury. He has a goal and four points in 17 games this season with 12 minutes in the sin bin.

Michael Latta scored his first NHL goal on Friday in the Capitals 4-3 shootout win over Detroit.

Latta's goal tied the game at three and sent it into overtime and then the shootout. He knocked home a rebound after goaltender Jimmy Howard made the original save. "It was definitely nice to get it when it mattered so much, not a 7-0 game," Latta said. "He comes out and charges the puck a lot, so when [Joel Ward] put it back to the 'D' I just thought get to the net and hope. It bounced right on my stick. I'll take a lot of those." Latta now has three points and seven penalty minutes in 10 games.

Michael Latta has been called up by the Washington Capitals.

Latta has four points and 25 penalty minutes in six AHL games this season. If he plays consistently on the Capitals' third or fourth line then he might be worth a look if your team is desperate for penalty minutes.

Latta practiced alongside Alex Ovechkin and Marcus Johansson. Before you get too excited though, Latta was just filling in for Nicklas Backstrom, whose girlfriend gave birth Tuesday morning. Washington doesn't play again until Thursday, so Latta might end up being sent down without playing in a single game.

Michael Latta has impressed the Washington Capitals and has a chance to stick with the team heading into the regular season.

Latta was acquired from the Predators along with Martin Erat at the trade deadline as Filip Forsberg headed the other way. Latta is a chippy player and a good penalty killer and the Capitals hope that he can fill the spot vacated by Matt Hendricks last season. "He’s going to play here whether right now or in the near future. He brings something to this team," GM George McPhee said. "He did a good job in Boston being able to pick off passes, having his stick in the right places, and be in the right places to block shots." Latta's status is up in the air at this time and it looks as if he will start the season in the minors but he could be a nice source of penalty minutes and a few points when he eventually debuts in the NHL.

Michael Latta hopes to fill Matt Hendricks' role on the Capitals.

With Hendricks signing in Nashville, Latta, who was included in the Martin Erat trade at the deadline, sees a big opportunity. "I see [Hendricks] leave and I’m sure a lot of Caps fans are kind of upset," Latta said. "I heard nothing but good things about him as a guy. But he leaves and maybe that opens up a spot for me. You never know. It’s nice for me personally and selfishly that he’s gone, but we’ll see. Hopefully, I can do what he did." In 76 games in the AHL, Latta had 38 points and 198 penalty minutes.
