Ben Smith had a goal and an assist in a 4-1 win against Detroit on Sunday.

After getting some brief stints in the NHL prior to this season, Smith has firmly established himself in the league in 2013-14. The 25-year-old doesn't have any fantasy value though in standard leagues, given his nine goals and 21 points in 61 games this season.

Ben Smith has been getting power-play time with the Blackhawks because of Marian Hossa's upper-body injury.

"It's an opportunity that I've been hoping would come my way and I'm fortunate that it's happening — it's my turn to take advantage of it," said Smith, who normally skates on the fourth line. "With Hossa out there's some valuable ice time out there and I'm just trying to take it." He's been tasked with being Chicago's net-front presence on the man advantage. Smith has 19 points in 59 games this season.
Mar 13 - 11:13 AM

Ben Smith potted his eighth goal of the season in Tuesday's 4-2 loss to Colorado.

He has two points in his past three games to give him a total of 19 on the year. Smith had gone seven straight matches without finding the back of the net before Tuesday night.
Mar 5 - 9:28 AM

Ben Smith had a goal in Tuesday's overtime loss to the Calgary Flames.

He has seven markers and 16 points in 48 games this year. Smith has been averaging 11:45 of ice time per match in his first full NHL campaign.
Jan 29 - 9:47 AM

Ben Smith scored a goal against the Anaheim Ducks in Friday's 3-2 shootout loss.

Smith now has four goals and 10 points in 24 contests. He might have some fantasy value in a couple years, but for now he isn't worth owning in standard leagues.

Ben Smith will not play Saturday night against Minnesota.

He will be a healthy scratch to accommodate Jeremy Morin who will dress in his place. Morin skated in Saturday morning's practice with Bryan Bickell and Andrew Shaw.

Ben Smith found the back of the net in Chicago's 2-1 victory on Saturday.

It was Smith's first goal of the season. Although he's off to a decent start with two points in three games, Smith is expected to have little to no fantasy value in standard leagues in 2013-14.

Ben Smith is projected to play Saturday against Tampa Bay.

He was a healthy scratch for the team's opening contest, but coach Joel Quenneville wants to get all his players into the lineup early into the year. Smith is expected to replace Jimmy Hayes.

Ben Smith has made Chicago's roster as a role player.

He's expected to kill penalties and compete for playing time with Jimmy Hayes and Brandon Bollig on the Blackhawks' third or fourth line. Smith has four goals in 20 career NHL appearances over the past three seasons.

Ben Smith has two goals in two preseason games.

Smith is a strong contender to make the Chicago Blackhawks out of training camp. He's coming off of a strong season where he scored 27 goals and 47 points in 51 AHL games. That being said, we don't think Smith will have much fantasy value in 2013-14 if he does make the team. If he earns a spot with Chicago, it will likely be as a bottom-six forward.

Ben Smith may be able to crack Chicago's roster this season and help out the team's penalty kill unit.

The Blackhawks need someone to replace penalty-kill whiz Michael Frolik, who was traded to Winnipeg in the summer, and Smith could be a good option. "I've been trying to show I can block shots over the last couple of days," Smith said. "Any role, obviously, I'd take on this team. But that's something I'd for sure take pride in if called upon." Smith has killed penalties in the AHL with Rockford. Jeremy Morin, who is another training camp hopeful, will get a chance to compete for that role as well.

Ben Smith didn't have much time to prepare for Game 3.

Smith was inserted into the lineup when Marian Hossa was ruled out due to an upper body injury. Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville knew Hossa might not be available, but he kept Smith out of the pregame warm-up in an effort to avoid tipping his hand. "He didn’t really have the typical game-day preparation. I don’t know if he had a nap or a decent meal. He just came in, put his skates on and jumped into the Stanley Cup Final," Patrick Sharp said of Smith. "For a guy who works as hard as Benny does, to be rewarded like that, and I thought he played great." Smith is likely to play again if Hossa is unavailable for Game 4.

Ben Smith said he didn't find out he was playing in Game 3 until after pregame warmups.

Smith was inserted into the lineup when Marian Hossa couldn't go after testing out his upper-body injury in the pregame skate. Hossa's absence forced Joel Quenneville to get extremely creative with his lines. Smith skated with Patrick Sharp and Dave Bolland, while Jonathan Toews was flanked by Marcus Kruger and Michael Frolik and Patrick Kane played alongside Brandon Saad and Michal Handzus. "It was kind of a wild night," said Smith. "I was just grateful to be a part of it, to get an opportunity. I just wish we could have gotten the win."
