Smith had no points and a minus-two rating in four games with Colorado. The veteran forward will likely get a fourth line role in Toronto and he's expected to help on the penalty kill.

Originally drafted in 2008 in the sixth round by Chicago, Smith has managed just 201 career NHL games. Suffice it to say, he offers little in fantasy.

Ben Smith will be a healthy scratch in Colorado's game against Washington on Tuesday night.

After defeating the Penguins last night, the Avs will make one change to their lineup and it's Smith coming out for veteran Cody McLeod. Defenseman Eric Gelinas is also expected to watch the game from the press box.

Ben Smith is in the running for a roster spot with the Avalanche.

He has been seeing time at center for Colorado during training camp, but can play on the wing as well. Rene Bourque and Gabriel Bourque, who are with the Avs on professional tryouts, are also in the mix for the last forward spots on the team.

Ben Smith scored the game winning goal at the 15:44 minute mark in a 4-2 victory by the Colorado Avalanche over the Dallas Stars on Wednesday night.

Smith played for four different teams in 2015-16 and is looking for a spot on the Avalanche. Last year, he played 41 games combined with the NHL’s San Jose Sharks, Toronto Maple Leafs, the AHL’s San Jose Barracuda, and Toronto Marlies. With a NHL career 27 goals to his credit, he managed to secure only two last year with the Leafs. The other goals Wednesday night were scored by Joe Whitney, Francois Beauchemin, and Patrick Wiercloch.

The Colorado Avalanche have signed forward Ben Smith to a one-year, two-way contract.

He'll earn $675,000 if he sticks in the NHL and $150,000 in the AHL. The 28-year-old spent last season with the San Jose Sharks and Toronto Maple Leafs. Smith scored two goals and six points in 22 games in 2015-16.He also has some international experience, as he won a bronze medal with Team USA at the World Hockey Championship in 2015. This is more of a depth signing for the Avs. Smith won't have any fantasy value.

Smith and Jeremy Morin (going from Toronto to San Jose) were the minor pieces involved in this trade. The Leafs end up getting Smith, Alex Stalock and a conditional fourth-round draft pick from the Sharks for Morin and James Reimer. Smith has no points and a minus-1 rating in six games this season.
