Ben Smith's upper-body injury is a concussion.
Smith hasn't played since Oct. 31 due to the injury. This is unfortunately his second stint on the sidelines this season because of a head injury and that's limited him to four contests in 2015-16. Nov 25 - 5:23 PM

Ben Smith (upper body) skated after practice Monday.

He is not expected to play on San Jose's road trip, which doesn't end until Nov. 21, but getting back on the ice is encouraging. Smith suffered what is believed to be a head injury back on Oct. 31.
Nov 17 - 3:43 PM

Ben Smith is dealing with an upper-body injury.

Smith will miss Tuesday's game as a result. He has no points in four games this season.
Nov 10 - 9:22 AM

Ben Smith returned to the lineup on Wednesday October 28.

Smith made his third appearance of the season and saw 7:56 of ice time in his return from a head injury. He had been sidelined since Oct. 17.
Oct 29 - 2:20 AM

Ben Smith (head) is getting close to returning.

He has taken part in two straight practices. "Felt good," Smith said after Tuesday's session. "We'll have to talk to the trainers and see how that whole protocol works." Smith hasn't played since he was struck in the head by a shot from teammate Marc-Edouard Vlasic on Oct. 17.
Oct 27 - 5:50 PM

Ben Smith (head) took part in Friday's practice.

Smith hasn't played since he was struck in the head by the puck on Oct. 17. "Definitely just feeling a little off," Smith said. "When you take any blow to the head, that’s kind of how you feel. Unfortunately, I’ve had that a couple times in my career. Just trying to be smart, be safe, and when I’m ready to come back just hit the ground running." There's no timetable for his return, although obviously the fact that he's practicing is encouraging.
Oct 23 - 5:29 PM

Ben Smith (upper body) won't be in the lineup Monday night.

He was injured in Saturday's game against the New York Islanders when he was hit in the head by a shot. Smith has no points and one shot in two appearances with the Sharks this year.
Oct 19 - 1:56 PM

Ben Smith left Saturday night’s game against the Islanders after taking a slap shot to the head.

Sharks coach Peter DeBoer did not have an update on his condition. Smith played 4:35 and had one hit before departing in the second period. He is pointless on the season.
Oct 17 - 11:37 PM

Ben Smith will make his season debut for the Sharks on Friday night against the Devils.

Smith is expected to center the Sharks' fourth line between Barclay Goodrow and Mike Brown. However there isn't a lick of fantasy value between the three of them, unless your league rewards tough guys. In any case, it's interesting to note that Smith has ranked within the top-25 in Lady Byng vote getters the last two seasons.
Oct 16 - 6:34 PM

Ben Smith will be a healthy scratch on Saturday.

Smith was a healthy scratch for the opener and since the Sharks won their opener, they will keep the same lineup. Smith should see some action soon but is a fringe player at best in the deepest of pools.
Oct 10 - 10:50 AM

Ben Smith netted his first goal of the pre-season in Friday night's 4-1 win over Arizona.

Smith isn't known for his scoring prowess, but he'll secure an NHL job if he can get back to his ways from 2013-14 when he scored 14 goals. Smith has just 11 other goals in 100 other games however, so it's unlikely this is the start of a changed career.
Sep 26 - 2:08 AM

Ben Smith tied Team USA's match with Team Switzerland at one midway through Thursday's quarterfinal game.

It was Smith's second goal and point of the tournament. The 26-year-old forward scored seven goals and 14 points in 80 games between Chicago and San Jose this past season.
May 14 - 10:39 PM

Ben Smith will face his former Chicago Blackhawk teammates on Saturday for the first time since getting traded almost two weeks ago.

Smith got off to a hot start with a goal and an assist in his first game with the Sharks but has only one assist in four games since then. "A little weird, but it’s a hockey game. We need the points," Smith said. "Whatever individual wish I have to beat them, it’s even more important for the team to get the two points."
Mar 14 - 10:05 AM

Shortly after being acquired by the Sharks, Ben Smith contributed a goal and an assist in a 4-0 shutout of the visiting Montreal Canadiens in San Jose Monday night.

Smith was obtained on trade-deadline Monday by the Sharks from the Chicago Blackhawks for Andrew Desjardins. Then he went out and scored San Jose's first goal of the night at 6:51 of the first period and assisted on Matt Irwin's goal at 6:28 of the second period. Don't let Smith's San Jose debut fool you. As Rotoworld's Michael Finewax wrote on his trade deadline blog shortly after the Smith-Desjardins deal: "Smith will help out the Sharks' bottom-six forwards and is a good penalty killer who can score the occasional goal. Will help out but not much of a fantasy asset." Smith now has six goals and five assists on the season. Joe Pavelski also had a goal (32nd) and an assist (27th) for the Sharks. Patrick Marleau picked up his 15th goal of the season.
Mar 3 - 12:48 AM

Ben Smith will suit up for Monday's contest with the Canadiens after being acquired earlier in the day.

Smith was just acquired by the Sharks in exchange for Andrew Desjardins Monday morning and will be able to play versus Montreal tonight. Smith is a bottom six forward with five goals and four assists in 61 games this season. He does not carry any fantasy value.
