Ben Smith will face his former Chicago Blackhawk teammates on Saturday for the first time since getting traded almost two weeks ago.

Smith got off to a hot start with a goal and an assist in his first game with the Sharks but has only one assist in four games since then. "A little weird, but it’s a hockey game. We need the points," Smith said. "Whatever individual wish I have to beat them, it’s even more important for the team to get the two points."

Shortly after being acquired by the Sharks, Ben Smith contributed a goal and an assist in a 4-0 shutout of the visiting Montreal Canadiens in San Jose Monday night.

Smith was obtained on trade-deadline Monday by the Sharks from the Chicago Blackhawks for Andrew Desjardins. Then he went out and scored San Jose's first goal of the night at 6:51 of the first period and assisted on Matt Irwin's goal at 6:28 of the second period. Don't let Smith's San Jose debut fool you. As Rotoworld's Michael Finewax wrote on his trade deadline blog shortly after the Smith-Desjardins deal: "Smith will help out the Sharks' bottom-six forwards and is a good penalty killer who can score the occasional goal. Will help out but not much of a fantasy asset." Smith now has six goals and five assists on the season. Joe Pavelski also had a goal (32nd) and an assist (27th) for the Sharks. Patrick Marleau picked up his 15th goal of the season.

Ben Smith will suit up for Monday's contest with the Canadiens after being acquired earlier in the day.

Smith was just acquired by the Sharks in exchange for Andrew Desjardins Monday morning and will be able to play versus Montreal tonight. Smith is a bottom six forward with five goals and four assists in 61 games this season. He does not carry any fantasy value.
Mar 2 - 3:27 PM

The San Jose Sharks have acquired Ben Smith from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for Andrew Desjardins.

Smith has five goals and nine points in 61 games this season. This trade shouldn't alter the fact that he has no fantasy value in standard leagues.
Mar 2 - 12:58 PM

Updating a previous item, Ben Smith will play in Sunday afternoon's game against Pittsburgh.

It looked like Smith was going to be a healthy scratch for the Hawks, but they decided to sit Daniel Carcillo instead. Neither player has any fantasy value going forward.
Feb 15 - 12:31 PM

Ben Smith scored a goal in Saturday's 3-2 shootout loss to Columbus.

Smith's third period goal tied the game at two. The 26-year-old has been a solid depth player for the Hawks this season. Smith has three points in his last two games, but has just eight points overall this season.

Ben Smith had a goal and an assist in Chicago's 3-2 victory over Boston Thursday night and Jonathan Toews' spot as first line center for the final period.

Smith collected his two points in the first period, so he was likely rewarded with the prime spot on the top line due to his strong effort on the evening. With three goals and two assists in 29 games, Smith is not a smart fantasy pick-up until Toews' status is updated. The Hawks announced that they kept their captain out for "precautionary reasons" after taking a rough hit from behind from Dennis Seidenberg in the second period.

Ben Smith wants to contribute more offensively.

He has one goal and one assist in 21 games this season, but coach Joel Quenneville is satisfied with the way Smith is playing. "When you look at guys that, they're doing other things," said Chicago's bench boss. "They've got a big responsibility on the PK, and they're doing the job in that area. That's why it was such a nice year [last season] for him; the production was a bonus on top of that." He posted 14 goals and 26 points in 75 matches in 2013-14.

Ben Smith moved up to Chicago's top line at practice on Thursday.

He skated with Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane in the session. The Blackhawks switched up their combinations after losing Patrick Sharp to injury. Marian Hossa joined Andrew Shaw and Brandon Saad on the second unit, while Marcus Kruger skated between Kris Versteeg and Bryan Bickell on the third line. The fourth consisted of Brad Richards, Peter Regin and Jeremy Morin. Coach Joel Quenneville hasn't been shy about changing his lines, especially this season, so don't expect these to last.

Ben Smith scored his first goal of the season in Thursday's 3-2 loss to Nashville.

He gave the Blackhawks a 1-0 lead at the time. Smith has been averaging 14:12 of ice time per contest this season, which has included a key role on Chicago's penalty kill unit.

Ben Smith has inked a two-year extension with the Chicago Blackhawks.

Smith would have become a restricted free agent this summer. The defensive forward had 14 goals and 12 assists in 75 games in 2013-14.

The Chicago Blackhawks plan to enter into contract talks with Ben Smith in the coming weeks.

Smith is scheduled to be a restricted free agent, so there's no urgency. Still, it's fair to assume that he'll get a meaningful raise from his 2013-14 salary of $575,000.

Ben Smith has netted two goals in his past two playoff games.

He has three markers on nine shots in six contests versus Los Angeles during the Western Conference Final. Smith scored a nice bank shot off Jonathan Quick's pad during Game 6 on Friday night.

Ben Smith and Andrew Shaw received playing time as Chicago's second-line center in Game 3 when the team was trailing in the third period.

Joel Quenneville didn't say who would be skating alongside Patrick Kane on Monday night, but he thought the talented winger looked "dangerous" in the match.
