Sami Vatanen had a strong first game as a New Jersey Devil.
Vatanen led all Devils' players in ice time (23:13) and was a fixture on the team's second powerplay alongside Damon Severson at the point. We wouldn't be surprised if he joined Will Butcher on the squad's first unit Saturday night against the Coyotes. If Vatanan is available in your pool, grab him immediately. Dec 2 - 9:06 AM

Sami Vatanen will be paired up with Andy Greene on Friday.

It will be Vatanen's debut with the Devils after he was acquired from Anaheim on Thursday. Vatanen is also getting a spot on the top power-play unit, but not in place of rookie defenseman Will Butcher. Instead, Vatanen will actually be taking the traded Adam Henrique's spot, which means that the Devils will be using two blueliners instead of one on their top power-play unit, at least for now. We'll have to see if these units stick.

Sami Vatanen should make his Devils debut on Friday against Colorado.

New Jersey acquired Vatanen from Anaheim on Thursday in a deal that also involved Adam Henrique. Vatanen will be logging big minutes for the Devils, but the X-Factor is how much power-play ice time Vatanen will get. As things currently stand, rookie Will Butcher has typically been the lone defenseman on the Devils' first power-play unit and he's excelled in that role. Damon Severson has usually served on the Devils' second power-play unit. Vatanen might end up replacing Severson, but we'll have to wait and see.
Dec 1 - 7:11 AM

The New Jersey Devils have acquired Sami Vatanen and a conditional third round draft pick from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for Adam Henrique, Joseph Blandisi, and a 2018 third-round selection.

In Vatanen, the Devils are getting a blueliner capable of logging top minutes, but his value to fantasy owners is somewhat more suspect. He had 37 points in 2014-15 and 38 points in 2015-16, but he fell to 24 points last season. So far this has been another rough campaign offensively as he's been limited to a goal and four points in 15 contests, though it's worth noting that a shoulder injury cost him the start of the campaign. Regardless, this trade offers him a fresh start. We don't recommend grabbing him immediately in standard leagues, but he is worth keeping an eye on.
Nov 30 - 10:20 AM

Sami Vatanen netted his first goal of the season on Tuesday.

Vatanen was playing in his fifth game as he couldn't make his season debut until Oct. 28 due to a shoulder injury. He's a big part of the Ducks' defense and does chip in offensively, but he's still not one of the more attractive fantasy options. He might end up with around 20 points this season, in part due to his time missed due to injury.
Nov 8 - 4:34 AM

Sami Vatanen will not play Sunday against Carolina.

Vatanen is listed as a healthy scratch for the match after he got back in the lineup on Saturday night. He was on the ice for the pregame warmup, but he didn't take part in line rushes. Anaheim doesn't want to play him back-to-back after he just returned, which is understandable.
Oct 29 - 4:59 PM

Sami Vatanen appears to be ready to return from his shoulder injury Saturday night against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Vatanen took regular line rushes alongside Jaycob Megna at the Ducks' morning skate, indicating he is set to return. He also isn't listed on injured reserve anymore on Anaheim's official website. He hasn't played yet this season due to off-season shoulder surgery. The Ducks will be happy to welcome him back to the lineup after news broke that Cam Fowler could be sidelined for another month. Vatanen should see power-play time and is worth monitoring.
Oct 28 - 12:13 PM

Sami Vatanen (shoulder) might be able to make his return during the Ducks' upcoming four-game road trip.

In other words, Vatanen isn't expected to be available on Friday, but anything after that is a real possibility. "Well, it’s close," Vatanen said. "But it’s not quite there for me right now. It’s getting close. It might be just a little while more and we’re ready to play. I want to feel that I’m ready to take the hits and I’ll be ready to give some hits." He had three goals and 24 points in 71 contests last season.
Oct 19 - 4:11 AM

Sami Vatanen (shoulder) was back at practice for the first time this season on Sunday.

Vatanen had offseason shoulder surgery and it was thought that he would be back sometime in November at the earliest but coach Randy Carlyle thinks that an October return is possible. Vatanen had only 24 points in 71 games last season but did have 38 points the previous campaign. Expect something in the middle this season from the blueliner.
Oct 9 - 5:58 AM

Sami Vatanen (shoulder) might be available to play sometime in November.

He won't be a full participant at training camp, but feels he is on the right track. "It's not ready yet," Vatanen said. "I'm progressing every day. I've been skating right now and doing a little bit of passing and shooting. It feels better every week. We've just got to keep doing what we're doing and try not to have any setbacks."
Sep 15 - 12:55 PM

The Anaheim Ducks did not protect defenseman Sami Vatanen.

This was not a surprise as the Ducks protected only three blueliners and Kevin Bieksa had to be kept as he had a no-move clause. But expect Vatanen back with the Ducks next season once he recovers from shoulder surgery that is expected to keep him out until the 2017-18 season is underway as the Ducks reportedly have a deal in place with Vegas. Look for the Golden Knights to get a prospect and a 2018 first round pick from Anaheim in exchange for not taking either Vatanen or Josh Manson.
Jun 19 - 7:22 AM

Sami Vatanen was not traded on Saturday and for now remains a member of the Anaheim Ducks.

The injured defenseman could be gone Wednesday to Vegas as it appears the Ducks will not have him as one of their keepers. Vatanen underwent shoulder surgery in late May and is expected to be out four-five months but that may not deter the Golden Knights in taking him as their Anaheim pick. Vatanen had only 24 points in 71 games last season but the 26-year-old blueliner had 37 and 38 points in his previous two seasons.
Jun 18 - 8:19 AM

There are reportedly plenty of teams interested in acquiring Sami Vatanen from the Ducks.

If Anaheim can trade Vatanen then it would make protecting players for the expansion draft easier on them. He still has three years left on his contract and underwent shoulder surgery after the Ducks were eliminated from the playoffs. Vatanen may not be ready for the start of the 2017-18 regular season because of the procedure.
Jun 7 - 7:00 PM

Sami Vatanen has undergone shoulder surgery.

It's not clear exactly how long Vatanen will need to recover, but teammate Hampus Lindholm is expected to need four-to-five months to rehab from his upcoming shoulder surgery and the Ducks revealed that Vatanen will take "even longer" for his recovery. In other words, don't expect Vatanen to be ready for the start of the 2017-18 campaign. He had three goals and 24 points in 71 contests.
May 25 - 5:32 PM

Anaheim defenseman Sam Vatanen had two assists in the Ducks' 6-3 loss to the Nashville Predators in the sixth and final game of the Western Conference Final series Monday night.

Vatanen drew assists on goals by Ondrej Kase (second of the playoffs) and Cam Fowler (also his second). Chris Wagner scored the Ducks' other goal, his third of the postseason.
