Just a head's up as he isn't a big fantasy difference-maker, at least at this point in his young career.
Apr 20 - 5:27 PM

Mar 27 - 8:33 AM

With the injury to Cam Fowler, the Ducks will be looking to Sami Vatanen to provide some offensive punch from the blueline.

The Ducks recalled Vatanen from Norfolk to provide some scoring from the backend as Hampus Lindholm is Anaheim's only real active offensive defenseman. Vatanen just recently recovered from a lower-body injury but looked good in practice Saturday while paired with Bryan Allen. If you need a short-term boost from your blueline this season and you are looking for a nice sleeper for next season, pick up Vatanen.

Sami Vatanen was told by the Anaheim Ducks that he was returned to the AHL for the purposes of activating Mark Fistric from the injured reserve list.

"He knows exactly the reason why he went down," Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau said. "So it's not like we pull him in and say 'You're playing bad. These guys are ahead of you.' He knows why he's in this situation." Vatanen was one of two defenseman on Anaheim's roster signed to a two-way deal. The other was Hampus Lindholm, who has been one of the NHL's best rookies this season.

Feb 25 - 3:46 PM

Sami Vatanen has gotten off to a great start with four assists in two Olympic games.

Vatanen leads all defensemen in that regard. He's been playing for Finland in the Olympics, which started the competition against two significantly weaker teams in Norway and Austria. All the same, this should be a nice confidence boost for the 22-year-old blueliner.

Jan 21 - 1:12 PM

Sami Vatanen had a goal and two assists in the Ducks' 9-1 demolition of the Vancouver Canucks.

It was Vatanen's second career multi-point game and his first three-point contest. He has six goals and 14 points in 38 games in 2013-14.
Jan 16 - 8:47 AM

Sami Vatanen has scored a couple of goals since his recall from the minors nine games ago.

Vatanen was recalled after the Ducks had a couple of injuries on their blueline, notably to Luca Sbisa. It was Sbisa's return to the lineup in November that forced the Ducks to send Vatanen down after 17 games in which he had a goal and five points with a plus-three rating. He now has three goals and seven points in 26 games with an even rating. The rookie has a lot of offensive upside and is worth taking in a couple of years as a top-20 offensive defenseman.

Sami Vatanen will look to solidify his spot on the Anaheim Ducks blueline.

Vatanen thought that he had seen the end of his minor league career but when the Ducks started making him a healthy scratch earlier this month, upper management decided that it was better to let him play in the minors than get rusty in the press box. Vatanen was recalled on Friday due to the injury to Francois Beauchemin and then when Luca Sbisa went down on Friday with a torn tendon in his right hand, Vatanen will be staying with the Ducks for the next couple of months at least. Vatanen is an offensive player as the 22-year-old has eight points in 17 games. He is worth picking up in deeper leagues as he will see plenty of power play time in Anaheim.
