Sami Vatanen scored once and assisted on two in the Ducks 4-3 SO loss to Anaheim on Tuesday.
The Ducks’ young defensemen is red hot with points in four of his last five games and has been an offensive force all season with 16 points (5G-11A) in 20 games thus far. His two assists were power play markers and he racked up 21:47 of ice time. It wasn’t all roses for Vatanen though as he did cough up the puck on two of the Flames goals in third period. Coach Bruce Boudreau loves the slapshot of defenseman Sami Vatanen.

Boudreau has Vatanen quarterbacking the power play and Vatanen has not disappointed scoring all four of his goals with the man-advantage as well as six of his eight assists. "Some of the smallest guys in hockey have always had some of the biggest shots," Boudreau said of the 5'10" rearguard. "Like golf, I know a lot of short people who can hit the ball 300 yards plus. But I have no clue, quite frankly." Vatanen is a must play in all fantasy pools.
Nov 15 - 5:31 AM

Sami Vatanen scored a goal in Anaheim's 2-1 shootout loss to Vancouver on Sunday night.

The Ducks were without Corey Perry (flu), but they still managed to pick up a point in defeat. Vatanen has been a big surprise for Anaheim this season. The 23-year-old has four goals and 10 points in 16 games, and all four of his goals have come on the power play. Vatanen has played over 20:00 in all but three of Anaheim's games. He should continue to get a good amount of ice time going forward, which should allow him to keep putting up good offensive numbers.
Nov 10 - 12:03 AM

Sami Vatanen has yet to pick up a point when the Ducks are at even strength.

Fortunately for Vatanen fantasy owners, the blueliner has three goals and six assists on the power play. Just an FYI as he is tied for the lead in power play points among defensemen with Kris Letang and Keith Yandle.
Nov 9 - 4:47 AM

Sami Vatanen played alongside Cam Fowler on Friday.

The Ducks were forced to juggle their blueliners with the injury to Mark Fistric and Vatanen got a boost as Josh Manson, the son of ex-NHLer Dave, made his NHL debut with Clayton Stoner as his defensive partner. Vatanen has seen his playing time in five-on-five situations go up over the last two games as he also continues to see plenty of time killing penalties and on the first power play. Vatanen has three goals and seven points in 12 games with all his points coming on the power play.
Nov 1 - 4:50 AM

Sami Vatanen has seven points this season and all have come on the power play.

The defenseman is tied for second in power play points with Keith Yandle, one behind the great Sidney Crosby. For those of you who read The Power Play Report, you already know that Vatanen is the only blueliner on the Ducks first power play unit and that he has surpassed Cam Fowler on the depth chart as far as the man advantage is concerned. "He’s a lot better this year than he was last year (because of his) experience and confidence," coach Bruce Boudreau said. "Things are going well for him. He signed a one-way contract during the summer, and last year he was on a two-way, so he was a little nervous every time something would go wrong or he wouldn’t do it right that he would be sent down. I think confidence has a lot to do with his game right now. He’s pretty confident and self-assured in what he’s doing."
Oct 26 - 6:34 AM

Sami Vatanen scored a goal and an assist in Friday night's 4-1 win over Columbus.

They were highlight worthy, too. His assist was on a great slap-pass to Corey Perry just 88-seconds in, and seven minutes later he was shooting through Perry's screen for his own powerplay goal. The sophomore defender now has seven points (three goals) through just eight games this season. He had just 21 points (six goals) in 48 games last season.
Oct 25 - 1:48 AM

Sami Vatanen scored two goals in Anaheim’s 3-0 win over the St. Louis Blues on Sunday night.

The goals were Vatanen’s first two of the season, and both were scored on the power play. The win was the Ducks fifth in a row. Ryan Getzlaf registered assists on both Vatanen goals. Matt Belesky scored the other goal for the Ducks. Vatanen now has two goals and five points in six games so far this season. The 23-year-old should finish the season with 30 to 40 points.
Oct 19 - 10:41 PM

Sami Vatanen quarterbacked the power play on Thursday and looked quite good while doing so.

The Ducks scored three times with the man-advantage and Vatanen set up two goals as Anaheim went with one defenseman and four forwards. Ryan Getzlaf, Corey Perry, Ryan Kesler and Patrick Maroon gave the Ducks a powerful unit on the power play and that bodes well for the rest of the season. Vatanen's fantasy value will be sky-high if he remains on the first unit. Grab him now if you can.
Oct 11 - 5:18 AM

Sami Vatanen got some power-play ice time during Saturday's preseason game.

Cam Fowler being sidelined due to a leg injury created an opening for Vatanen, but he's worth keeping an eye on even when Fowler returns. Vatanen had 21 points in 48 games last season and might have some fantasy value in standard leagues if he gets regular minutes in 2014-15.
Oct 6 - 5:15 AM

Sami Vatanen has inked a two-year, $2.525 million contract with the Anaheim Ducks.

Vatanen was a restricted free agent after completing his entry-level deal. He had six goals and 21 points in 48 games with Anaheim in 2013-14.
Jul 22 - 12:21 PM

Sami Vatanen has been called up by Anaheim and it looks like he'll play in Game 3.

He participated in the morning skate alongside Bryan Allen. If Vatanen does play then it will be his NHL playoff debut. He recorded six goals and 21 points in 48 games with the Ducks during the regular season.
May 8 - 3:36 PM

The Anaheim Ducks demoted defenseman Sami Vatanen to the AHL on Sunday.

Just a head's up as he isn't a big fantasy difference-maker, at least at this point in his young career.
Apr 20 - 5:27 PM

Defenseman Sami Vatanen assisted twice in the Anaheim Ducks' 3-2 overtime win over the visiting Colorado Avlanche in the team's regular-season finale Sunday night.

Vatanen finishes the season with 15 assists. He helped set up the game-winning goal by Nick Bonino in overtime. Bonino's goal was his 22nd. Also scoring goals for the Ducks were Patrick Maroon (15th) and Saku Koviu (11th).
Apr 13 - 11:17 PM

Sami Vatanen picked up two assists in the Ducks' 3-2 win on Wednesday.

That gives Vatanen 17 points in 43 games this season. The 22-year-old ranks 11th in the scoring race among rookie defensemen.
