Sami Vatanen (shoulder) might be able to make his return during the Ducks' upcoming four-game road trip.

In other words, Vatanen isn't expected to be available on Friday, but anything after that is a real possibility. "Well, it’s close," Vatanen said. "But it’s not quite there for me right now. It’s getting close. It might be just a little while more and we’re ready to play. I want to feel that I’m ready to take the hits and I’ll be ready to give some hits." He had three goals and 24 points in 71 contests last season.
Oct 19 - 4:11 AM

Sami Vatanen (shoulder) was back at practice for the first time this season on Sunday.

Vatanen had offseason shoulder surgery and it was thought that he would be back sometime in November at the earliest but coach Randy Carlyle thinks that an October return is possible. Vatanen had only 24 points in 71 games last season but did have 38 points the previous campaign. Expect something in the middle this season from the blueliner.
Oct 9 - 5:58 AM

Sami Vatanen (shoulder) might be available to play sometime in November.

He won't be a full participant at training camp, but feels he is on the right track. "It's not ready yet," Vatanen said. "I'm progressing every day. I've been skating right now and doing a little bit of passing and shooting. It feels better every week. We've just got to keep doing what we're doing and try not to have any setbacks."
Sep 15 - 12:55 PM

The Anaheim Ducks did not protect defenseman Sami Vatanen.

This was not a surprise as the Ducks protected only three blueliners and Kevin Bieksa had to be kept as he had a no-move clause. But expect Vatanen back with the Ducks next season once he recovers from shoulder surgery that is expected to keep him out until the 2017-18 season is underway as the Ducks reportedly have a deal in place with Vegas. Look for the Golden Knights to get a prospect and a 2018 first round pick from Anaheim in exchange for not taking either Vatanen or Josh Manson.
Jun 19 - 7:22 AM

Sami Vatanen was not traded on Saturday and for now remains a member of the Anaheim Ducks.

The injured defenseman could be gone Wednesday to Vegas as it appears the Ducks will not have him as one of their keepers. Vatanen underwent shoulder surgery in late May and is expected to be out four-five months but that may not deter the Golden Knights in taking him as their Anaheim pick. Vatanen had only 24 points in 71 games last season but the 26-year-old blueliner had 37 and 38 points in his previous two seasons.
Jun 18 - 8:19 AM

There are reportedly plenty of teams interested in acquiring Sami Vatanen from the Ducks.

If Anaheim can trade Vatanen then it would make protecting players for the expansion draft easier on them. He still has three years left on his contract and underwent shoulder surgery after the Ducks were eliminated from the playoffs. Vatanen may not be ready for the start of the 2017-18 regular season because of the procedure.
Jun 7 - 7:00 PM

Sami Vatanen has undergone shoulder surgery.

It's not clear exactly how long Vatanen will need to recover, but teammate Hampus Lindholm is expected to need four-to-five months to rehab from his upcoming shoulder surgery and the Ducks revealed that Vatanen will take "even longer" for his recovery. In other words, don't expect Vatanen to be ready for the start of the 2017-18 campaign. He had three goals and 24 points in 71 contests.
May 25 - 5:32 PM

Anaheim defenseman Sam Vatanen had two assists in the Ducks' 6-3 loss to the Nashville Predators in the sixth and final game of the Western Conference Final series Monday night.

Vatanen drew assists on goals by Ondrej Kase (second of the playoffs) and Cam Fowler (also his second). Chris Wagner scored the Ducks' other goal, his third of the postseason.
May 22 - 11:42 PM

Sami Vatanen earned an assist in Tuesday's 2-1 loss to Nashville in Game 3 of the Western Conference Final.

He has one goal and two power-play points in three games of the series. Vatanen appears to be getting back into form after he returned to the lineup in Round 2 against Edmonton.
May 17 - 9:43 AM

Sami Vatanen scored his first goal of the playoffs Sunday.

Vatanen's goal with a minute to go in the first was a big one as it cut the Predators lead in half and gave the Ducks confidence heading into the second stanza. Vatanen has been hurt during the playoffs and this could propel him back into the offensive defenseman he has been in previous seasons as he struggled this year with only three goals and 24 points after picking up 37 and 38 in his previous two campaigns.
May 15 - 8:16 AM

Sami Vatanen will return to the lineup on Sunday night in Game 3 against Edmonton.

Korbinian Holzer will be scratched to make room for him on the back end. This will be Vatanen's first appearance since Game 1 of the opening round against Calgary.
Apr 30 - 7:04 PM

Sami Vatanen is taking pregame warmups alongside Cam Fowler.

Vatanen could be back in the lineup for Game 3 versus Edmonton. The 25-year-old defender hasn't played since Apr. 13 because of an upper-body injury.
Apr 30 - 6:47 PM

Sami Vatanen is inching closer to a return to action.

Vatanen, who hasn't played since Game 1 against Calgary due to an upper-body injury, appears close to rejoining the lineup. It is unclear if he will be ready to play Sunday night, though. If Vatanen is not able to suit up, look for Korbinian Holzer to replace him again. Check back with us closer to 7:00 pm EST puck drop for updates.
Apr 30 - 9:32 AM

It's still unclear if Sami Vatanen will be available for Game 3 in Edmonton.

Vatanen hasn't made a postseason appearance since Game 1 against the Calgary Flames due to his upper-body injury. After being close to returning in Game 2 last night, there is apparently some doubt today that he will be ready in time for puck drop when the series resumes in Edmonton Sunday night. Staring down a 2-0 hole, the Ducks will need as many healthy bodies as possible if they wish to get back into the series.
