It is not clear if Sami Vatanen (upper body) is in Tampa or on his way to Tampa to join his teammates for Saturday afternoon's Game 5 against the Lightning.

Vatanen did not travel with the team on Friday but he had not been ruled out of Saturday's matinee. Check back with closer to the 3:00 pm EST puck drop for further updates.
Apr 21 - 10:51 AM

Sami Vatanen (upper body) will not travel with his teammates to Tampa Bay this afternoon.

Despite that, Vatanen hasn't been ruled out for Game 5 on Saturday. It certainly seems unlikely that he'll play in the contest, but the Devils aren't ruling out the possibility of him traveling to Tampa Bay later and appearing in the contest. That feels like a bit of gamesmanship given that this is the playoffs, but we'll see what happens.
Apr 19 - 1:49 PM

Sami Vatanen was forced from Wednesday's Game 4 loss to Tampa Bay due to an upper-body injury.

Vatanen was injured on a hit from Nikita Kucherov, who appeared to make contact with the Devils defender's head. No penalty was called on the play and Kucherov may get a call from league for the hit. Heading into tonight's Game 4 matchup, Vatanen led all Devils in average ice-time with 23:23 per game and it would be a huge loss if he is unable to recover in time for Game 5. Consider his status day-to-day for now.
Apr 18 - 10:24 PM

Sami Vatanen found the back of the net in a 5-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday afternoon.

Unfortunately, Vatanen also scored into his own goal when he tried to intercept Nikita Kucherov's centering pass. He appeared to lose his balance before putting the puck into his own net in the second period. Vatanen then somewhat redeemed himself with a goal moments before the end of the second period. The Finnish blueliner has 23 points in 42 career post-season games. Nico Hischier and Blake Coleman also scored in the loss.
Apr 14 - 6:15 PM

Sami Vatanen did not practice Friday with the rest of his New Jersey teammates.

It was a maintenance day off for the veteran defenseman who played nearly 27 minutes in Game 1 Thursday night. Vatanen will be in the Devils' lineup Saturday afternoon for Game 2 against the Lightning.
Apr 14 - 9:41 AM

Sami Vatanen will sit out Saturday night's game against the Capitals.

Vatanen will be another key New Jersey player who will be rested in a meaningless game for the Devils. He will join Taylor Hall, Kyle Palmieri and Travis Zajac in the press box.
Apr 7 - 12:18 PM

Sami Vatanen has seen his minutes creep upwards lately.

Vatanen has been used as a top pairing defenseman all season, but he logged 27:46 minutes on March 8 and then 26:52 minutes on March 10. They ranked as second and fourth this season in terms of minutes played and were well above his season average of 22:07 minutes. "He's playing some very good hockey right now," Devils coach John Hynes said. "He can handle those type of minutes. It's something that, usually you don't tell him that we want you to play 27 minutes. It's more that he's a 22 to 23 minute guy, but he's increased his ice time based on his performance and his ability he's shown to be able to handle those types of minutes."
Mar 13 - 10:19 AM

Sami Vatanen scored his fourth of the season Saturday in a 3-2 shootout win over Nashville.

Vatanen had a four game scoring streak snapped earlier in the week but has 29 points this season including 25 in 45 games with New Jersey after his trade from Anaheim earlier in the season. He is worth picking up in deep leagues as he should get 40-45 points next season for the Devils.
Mar 11 - 8:05 AM

Sami Vatanen is on a four-game point streak.

Vatanen registered two assists in a 6-4 win against Montreal on Tuesday. He's up to three goals and 28 points in 58 contests, including 24 points in 43 games since joining New Jersey.
Mar 7 - 9:18 AM

Sami Vatanen recorded an assist in a 3-1 loss to Carolina on Friday.

Vatanen has only been held off the scoresheet once in his last five games and he's up to 10 points in his last 11 contests. Thanks to his recent efforts, he's reached the 25-point milestone after falling a point shy of it in 2016-17.
Mar 3 - 6:04 AM

Sami Vatanen registered an assist in the Devils' 4-2 loss to Minnesota on Thursday.

Vatanen has gotten five assists in his last four games. That gives him two goals and 22 points in 52 contests in 2017-18. He got off to a slow start with the Ducks, but has heated up with the Devils, recording 18 points in his last 37 contests.
Feb 23 - 4:59 AM

Sami Vatanen registered three assists in New Jersey's 4-3 overtime win against Washington Thursday night.

It was Vatanen's 300th career game and the first of those assists was the 100th of his career. With that three-point showing, he also now has a goal and 10 points in 20 contests with New Jersey since the trade. "Sami is really settling," Devils coach John Hynes noted. "His puck movement has been good. He was moving the puck when he first got here. His decisions now are smart. He’s making plays at the right times and not forcing plays."
Jan 19 - 9:12 AM

Sami Vatanen is on a four-game point streak.

Vatanen kept that run going by registering an assist in the Devils' 3-2 shootout loss to St. Louis. He got off to a quiet start offensively with New Jersey, with one point in his first 11 contests following his trade from Anaheim, but he's heating up.
Jan 3 - 7:45 AM

Although he has only registered three points in 13 games since being acquired from Anaheim, Sami Vatanen should be a strong fantasy player based on his offensive aggressiveness.

In Friday night's loss against the Sabres, Vatanen took eight shots on goal. What is more impressive about that stat is that the Devils had only one power play that lasted a mere 29 seconds. In other words, Vatanen took those eight shots while the Devils were playing five-on-five. If you have Vatanen on your fantasy squad, be patient. He will start to rack up some numbers if he continues to attack as he has done since arriving in New Jersey.
