Mark Barberio wants to continue to improve at the AHL level so that when he receives a shot at making it to the NHL he is ready.

"I just have to keep putting my work in on the ice and in the gym," he said. "The step from junior to the AHL was big and I'm pretty sure the step from the AHL to the NHL is even bigger. So that just means I have to be in better shape, and stronger ... because the guys up there are even bigger and faster so that means whatever I'm doing now I have to keep improving. You always have to try to improve or else you are never going anywhere." Barberio was presented with the Eddie Shore Award, which goes to the AHL's most outstanding defenseman, last season after he produced 61 points in 74 games. He has gotten off to another strong start this campaign with three goals and 11 points in his first 14 contests. However, the Lightning blueline is fairly crowded at the moment, so it may take some more time before he gets his shot.

Mark Barberio has signed a three-year, entry-level deal with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Barberio scored 17 goals and 60 points in 65 games with the QMJHL Moncton Wildcats. He was selected in the sixth round of the 2008 NHL entry draft. He has some offensive upside, but he isn't expected to have any fantasy value in 2010-11.
