David Savard worked hard on his conditioning and it helped him enjoy a breakout season in 2014-15.
His average ice time per game went up 5:37 from 17:19 in 2013-14 thanks to his improved conditioning and a spot on the top defense pairing with Jack Johnson. Savard led the Blue Jackets in total shifts (2,165) and even-strength ice time (1,486:10). He is expected to be a fixture on the power play in 2015-16 and could surpass the 40-point mark. That would work out perfectly for Savard, as he will be a restricted free agent next summer. He has come a long way for a player who almost didn't get a qualifying offer after the 2013 season. David Savard will suit up for Canada in the World Hockey Championships.

Savard is one of only two players on the Canadian roster who does not already possess international experience, but after submitting the best season of his career, it's not as though his place on the team isn't warranted.
Apr 14 - 9:47 PM

David Savard had a pair of assists and was a plus-three on Friday.

It was a big game for Savard and his defensive partner Jack Johnson who also had a pair of assists to go with a plus-three. Savard is having his best season in the NHL as he has 10 goals and 35 points. He is also even in the plus/minus category after going plus-five in his last two games. He is worth selecting next season in deeper pools.
Apr 11 - 6:41 AM

David Savard scored a goal in Columbus' 4-3 shootout win over Edmonton on Wednesday.

With 11 goals, Savard is just one shy of the Blue Jackets' club record for a defenseman. Bryan Berard had 12 markers in 2005-06. Savard also has 16 assists in 70 games this season.
Mar 19 - 9:35 AM

David Savard got into his first NHL fight and had a career high 11 penalty minutes on Friday.

The defenseman is more known for his offense as he has 10 goals and 25 points in 64 games but now has 57 penalty minutes as he took on Steve Bernier of the Devils after Bernier gave Scott Hartnell a high hit that crumbled the tough former Flyer. "I saw his elbow come right by my face and the next thing I know Savvy was going at him," Hartnell said. "It’s always nice when guys stick up for you. I definitely gave him a big thank-you for that. It’s not easy fighting guys in this league, and Bernier is a big kid, too." It's a good thing to have Hartnell in your corner and Savard definitely does after Friday's action.
Mar 7 - 7:08 AM

David Savard scored a goal in a 5-3 loss to the Washington Capitals.

Savard has 10 goals and 25 points in 63 games in 2014-15. This is his second full campaign and a significant step up from his 2013-14 season. He's just 24 years old and has the potential to continue to grow offensively.
Mar 4 - 5:09 AM

David Savard notched two assists in the Blue Jackets' 5-2 loss to Montreal on Thursday night.

The young blueliner is slowly but surely finding his scoring touch in the NHL, as he now has 24 points in 60 games. The 6'2, 219 pounder had 77 points in 64 games in his final year with the Moncton Wildcats in the QMJHL, so he's got the potential to keep building his production.
Feb 26 - 11:08 PM

David Savard produced a goal and an assist for the Columbus Blue Jackets in the team's 4-3 loss to the visiting Los Angeles Kings Monday night.

The hard-hitting defenseman now has eight goals and 12 assists. He also increased his fantasy value with four hits against the Kings. Also delivering goals for the Blue Jackets Wednesday were Jack Skille (sixth) and Scott Hartnell (13th). All-star Ryan Johansen notched his 30th assist of the season on Hartnell's goal and fellow all-star Nick Foligno posted his 29th assist on Savard's goal.
Feb 9 - 9:39 PM

David Savard had 10 hits on Friday to move into 28th overall in the NHL in the category.

Savard certainly has fantasy value, especially if you use defenseman goals as a category as he has seven goals and 15 points this season in 39 games. He is a minus-10 which certainly takes away some value but overall, there are only 14 defensemen with more than seven goals thus far in the NHL.
Jan 10 - 8:45 AM

David Savard had a couple of assists on Saturday.

Savard had a nice game as he also chimed in with eight hits as he played 26:27 minutes in a 4-3 win over Pittsburgh. Savard has five goals and 11 points, not bad for a blueliner thus far and is becoming a valued member of the Blue Jackets defensive corps. If you are in need of a defenseman in deeper pools, Savard could be your man.

David Savard found the back of the net on Tuesday.

Savard has three goals and six points in 15 games this season. He's been averaging an impressive 22:43 minutes per game, up from 17:49 minutes per contest in 2013-14.
Wed, Nov 12, 2014 08:39:00 AM

David Savard is penciled in to begin the season on the Blue Jackets' top pairing with Jack Johnson.

Savard got some playing time with Johnson during the 2014 playoffs, so this doesn't come as a huge surprise. During the regular season though, Savard was often on the third pairing and averaged just 17:49 minutes per contest as a result. If he continues to mesh well with Johnson, then Savard could log over 20 minutes per game in 2014-15.

The Columbus Blue Jackets have re-signed restricted free agent defenseman David Savard to a two-year deal worth $2.6 million.

Savard will make $1.3 million in each of the next two seasons, a significant raise from the $709,000 he made in 2012-13. The 23-year-old climbed the depth chart and earned significant playing time last season after an off-season workout program made him slimmer and quicker. In 70 games, he had five goals, 10 assists, 28 penalty minutes and a plus-2 rating. He also had four assists and four penalty minutes in the Blue Jackets' first-round Stanley Cup playoffs loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Savard, a fourth-round pick (No. 94 overall) in 2009, will come to training camp in September as the likely third-pair defensive partner of Dalton Prout. But Tim Erixon and Cody Goloubef -- both of whom will need to clear waivers before they can be sent to AHL Springfield -- will compete for that spot, too. The Blue Jackets' top four defensemen from last season -- Fedor Tyutin - Jack Johnson and Ryan Murray - James Wisniewski -- are all returning.

David Savard had one assist in the Blue Jackets' 3-1 loss to Pittsburgh Saturday.

The assist gives the blueliner four in five games in the first round of the playoffs after he had only five goals and 10 assists in 70 regular season games. The Blue Jackets have always liked Savard's offensive skills and he has shown what he can do thus far in the playoffs. He is only 23, so he may be worth a late round flier in deep pools next season.

David Savard found the back of the net in Friday's 3-2 loss to Tampa Bay.

His fifth goal of the season came late in the third period to give Columbus a chance at a comeback, but they couldn't get the equalizer. Savard has two points in his last two games to give him 15 on the year.
