The Edmonton Oilers are scratching Nikita Nikitin in favor of Keith Aulie against the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday.
The $4.5 million per year defenseman has been disappointing so far, to say the least. There are some rumors that his back continues to bother him after having spasms earlier this year, but either way, it's disastrous for a team hurting this badly defensively to sit a guy who's getting paid so much. Tonight is a test for the ailing Oilers. Nov 22 - 1:47 PM

Nov 5 - 1:44 AM

Nikita Nikitin (back) is close to returning to the Edmonton lineup.

Nikitin skated with the Oilers on Friday but ended up missing all week with the injury. The Oilers are heading out on a five game road trip after their loss to Vancouver on Saturday but did not recall a defenseman from Oklahoma City leading to the belief that Nikitin is close to a return.
Nov 2 - 5:29 AM

Nikita Nikitin (back) was able to skate with the Oilers on Friday.

Nikitin will be evaluated again on Saturday, prior to Edmonton's game against Vancouver. He has a goal and three points in eight contests in 2014-15.
Oct 31 - 3:40 PM

Nikita Nikitin's initially undisclosed injury is actually back spasms.

Nikitin will probably have an MRI. He didn't take part in Monday's contest and wasn't on the ice for Tuesday's practice.

Oct 28 - 10:37 AM

Nikita Nikitin will be a game-time decision Monday night.

He was receiving "maintenance" in the morning, according to coach Dallas Eakins, which has put his presence in the lineup in question. Nikitin has a goal and an assist in his past two outings and three points in his last five games.
Oct 27 - 2:39 PM

Nikita Nikitin scored his first goal as a member of the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday.

That brings Nikitin up to two points in seven contests. He doesn't have much fantasy value in standard leagues.
Oct 23 - 8:54 AM

Nikita Nikitin (ankle) was able to play on Thursday.

Nikitin was expected to miss the start of the season due to his injury, so the fact that he was able to play in Edmonton's opener is a pleasant surprise. He had a minus-one rating in 18:55 minutes of ice time.
Oct 10 - 1:48 AM

Look for Nikita Nikitin (ankle) to start the season on the injured reserve list.

The move is still not official. Nikitin is expected to miss a couple of weeks so placing him on the injured list frees up a spot on the roster for another player. Look for Nikitin to be a key defensive player for Edmonton this season and he could get 25 points if healthy the rest of the way.
Oct 5 - 8:48 AM

Nikita Nikitin will miss a couple of weeks with an ankle injury.

The injury happened during Thursday's game and Nikitin was seen after the game in a walking boot. The injury will give defensemen on the bubble like Darnell Nurse, a shot to show what they can do at the NHL level at the start of the season.
Oct 4 - 6:56 AM

Nikita Nikitin suffered an ankle injury during Thursday's game.

Nikitin left the game in the second period and was seen wearing a walking boot after the contest. Oilers coach Dallas Eakins downplayed the boot, saying that it was just a precautionary move. "We're hoping it's just going to be a week, two weeks tops," Eakins said. Given that the Oilers' season opener is on Thursday, we wouldn't count on Nikitin being healthy in time.
Oct 3 - 10:48 AM

Coach Dallas Eakins was very impressed with the defensive duo of Nikita Nikitin and Mark Fayne on Saturday.

The Oilers acquired both during the off-season and the very early going looks promising as Edmonton was horrible on the back end last season, giving up 270 goals. Both are solid defensively but we cannot recommend either in traditional fantasy pools.
Sep 21 - 7:01 AM

Nikita Nikitin has agreed to a two-year, $9 million contract with the Edmonton Oilers.

The Oilers, who gained permission from Columbus to negotiate with Nikitin, will now give the Blue Jackets a fifth round pick as compensation. Nikitin had two goals and 15 points in 66 games in 2013-14. He's a reliable top-four defenseman, but he saw his role with the Blue Jackets diminish last season, so it's not surprising that both parties decided that move on.
