With a season in the NHL under his belt, Dylan McIlrath is hoping to secure a top-six spot in 2016-17.
McIlrath was only used in 34 games, recording two points and 64 penalty minutes over that span. If he does end up earning an everyday role with the Rangers he will likely be one of the league-leading defensemen in penalty minutes. For that reason alone, it's worth keeping tabs on how the Rangers' defensive situation shakes out. Sep 28 - 5:11 AM

Don't be surprised if the Rangers deal defenseman Dylan McIlrath in the off-season.

Apparently the blueliner is not a favorite of coach Alain Vigneault and since he is a restricted free agent, a move elsewhere may benefit both sides. The former 10th overall pick in the 2010 Draft was highly regarded but his four points in only 34 NHL games this season, makes him a bit of a bust at the age of 24.

Dylan McIlrath will be the odd-man out as Ryan McDonagh returns to the Rangers' blue line in Game 3 against Pittsburgh.

McIlrath is being displaced by both the captain, and fellow rookie Brady Skjei who is shifting to his unnatural right side. McIlrath has seen just 9:07 of work during his single playoff game this series.

Rangers coach Alain Vigneault was vague about the possibility of putting Dylan McIlrath into the lineup for Game 2 on Saturday.

McIlrath was a healthy scratch in the Rangers' playoff opener. "I’m considering all my options right now," Vigneault said when asked about McIlrath. "At this time of the year you have to look at all your personnel and who’s giving you the best and at this time nobody wants to not to play well but some guys play better than others. Obviously with my coaching staff we’re going to look at all my options." McIlrath had four points and 64 penalty minutes in 34 regular season games.

Dylan McIlrath will probably spend Thursday's game in the press box.

That would be the 11th consecutive time that McIlrath has been scratched, but the difference is that this time his knee wouldn't be the principle factor. McIlrath received medical clearance to play, but he was practicing as an extra player on Wednesday.
