The New Jersey Devils have signed prospect Jonathon Merrill to a three-year, entry-level deal.

He also agreed to an amateur tryout contract with Albany, so he can play the remainder of the year in the AHL. Merill just completed his third season with the University of Michigan, where he generated 11 points in 21 matches.

Devils prospect Jon Merrill will not turn pro next year, instead deciding to stick with Michigan for his junior season.

The defenseman was the Devils' second-round pick in the 2010 draft and had participated in the team's prospect camp over the summer. This news isn't too shocking as it seemed he'd been leaning toward this decision throughout the offseason. "Johnny talked with me this morning and indicated he'll be coming back," Michigan coach Red Berenson said. "He definitely had some dialogue with New Jersey. Jon realized he only played half of the season and he wants to be ready when he makes the move. He wants to be competing for an NHL job when he does. He doesn't want to be playing in the minors. I think it's the right thing for him."

While no decision has been made, it appears that Devils prospect Jon Merrill is leaning toward returning to college for one more season.

The 6-foot-3, 209-pound defenseman is ready physically for the pro game, but the organization's 20-year-old top prospect could use another year of seasoning. His coach at Michigan, Red Berenson, says he's stayed in touch with Merrill and he "absolutely" believes he'll be back. Merrill had seven goals and 25 points in his freshman season, but he had only 11 points in 19 games last year because he was suspended for the first 22 for violating team rules.

Jon Merrill hasn't indicated if he plans to return to the University of Michigan for the 2012-13 campaign or go pro.

"I don’t know," Merrill said. "Like I said, I’m just focusing on this week and we’ll see what happens." He received a 12-game suspension in October for violating team rules. It was later changed to an indefinite suspension. In the end, he had two goals and 11 points in 19 NCAA games in 2011-12.

Despite being suspended indefinitely by the University of Michigan, New Jersey prospect Jonathon Merrill was added to 2012 preliminary roster for Team U.S.A's world junior team.

The defenseman is still waiting to be reinstated after coach Red Berenson issued a 12-game ban before the season began for violating team rules. The decision was later changed to an indefinite suspension. Merill had seven goals and 25 points in 42 games last year in the NCAA and he won a bronze medal at the 2011 World Junior Championships.

Devils’ prospect Jon Merrill is suspended 12 games by the NCAA.

Merrill had an infraction based on his high school days. He was not scheduled to play in the NHL this season but will have to serve the 12 game suspension in the NCAA. Devils GM Lou Lamoriello says he spoke with Michigan coach Red Berenson regarding Merrill. Everyone is in an understanding that this was the right decision and Merrill does not plan on appealing.

New Jersey prospect Jonathon Merrill will likely remain in college for another season.

He recorded seven goals and 25 points with the University of Michigan, as a freshman, in 42 games this past campaign. He also suited up for the Americans in the World Junior Championships, where he had five points in six games, en route to a bronze medal. Merrill's Wolverines fell just short of the national title with a 3-2 overtime loss to Minnesota-Duluth in the NCAA championship game. The Devils selected him with the 38th overall pick in the 2010 draft.

The Devils aren't concerned with recently drafted Jon Merrill's discipline issues.

Merrill was projected by some to go in the first round, but he fell all the way to the 38th pick overall. He was given a two-week suspension for an off-ice incident that may have scared off some NHL clubs, but the Devils weren't one of them. "His interview sort of erased that," GM Lou Lamoriello said. "He told us exactly what happened. You sometimes take that chance. I met the parents. We would not have taken him if we didn't feel comfortable. We'll find out pretty quick." Merrill isn't expected to have any fantasy value next season, but he could eventually develop into a good offensive defenseman.

The New Jersey Devils have selected defenseman Jonathon Merrill with their first pick in the 2010 draft.

Merrill went 38th overall to the Devils. He is an offensively talented defenseman. He has a good shot from the point and his puck handling and skating abilities are above average. He needs to improve defensively and will attend the University of Michigan next season. The Devils will wait for him to develop.
