Jonathon Merrill (head) was back in the Devils' lineup on Thursday.
Merrill had been sidelined since being involved in a head-to-head collision with Ruslan Fedotenko on Sept. 19. He logged 23:23 minutes, so clearly New Jersey didn't believe it was necessary to ease Merrill back into the lineup. "I thought he was excellent," Devils coach Pete DeBoer said of Merrill. "He was the best defenseman of the group. That's another positive that he got through healthy." Oct 3 - 11:08 AM

Jonathon Merrill (head) feels "ready to go," but it's unclear if he'll play Thursday night in exhibition action against the Islanders.

He collided head-to-head with Ruslan Fedotenko on the first day of training camp practices on Sept. 19 and he's missed more than a week of sessions as a result. Merill has been taking part in scrimmages for the last two days.
Oct 1 - 5:01 PM

Jonathon Merrill (head) took part in Monday's practice.

Merrill was off the ice for roughly a week after being hit in the head during an accidental collision with Ruslan Fedotenko. He might be play in Thursday's preseason contest.
Sep 29 - 2:48 PM

Jonathon Merrill (head) wasn't on the ice Friday.

Let's remember that it's now been a week since Merrill had to leave the ice after absorbing a head hit and the reason the Devils initially gave us for his absence is that he had "the wind taken out of him." Devils GM Lou Lamoriello also claimed last week that he was "fine." The point is that when it comes to information about head hits, the initial statements from teams need to be taken with a grain of salt as these types of injuries can be worse than they initially sound.

Jonathon Merrill (head) should be able to start skating soon.

Merrill has been engaging in off-ice exercises. He's been sidelined since he accidentally collided with Ruslan Fedotenko on Friday and their heads smashed together. Merrill appeared to be woozy immediately following the incident and the reason the Devils gave for his subsequent absence is that he's had "the wind taken out of him." Merrill had a concussion last season.
Sep 25 - 8:13 AM

Jonathon Merrill (head) didn't skate on Sunday.

Merrill has been kept out of practices since he accidentally smashed heads with Ruslan Fedotenko on Friday. He appeared to be woozy immediately following the incident, but the Devils continue to insist that he's fine. "I think we're probably erring on the side of caution right now, just being safe with him," Devils coach Pete DeBoer said. "We have some time on our hands here right now. We're not in a rush. But I'm not concerned about it."
Sep 21 - 4:00 PM

Jon Merrill had the wind knocked out of him in a collision with Ruslan Fedotenko on Friday.

Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello said Saturday that Merrill, who did not practice, "is fine, he had the wind taken out of him and he's day to day." Coach Pete DeBoer is not concerned about it being a long-term problem, either. Merrill suffered a concussion last season, and that is why there's been more buzz about this injury. There's a chance the 22-year-old could skate on Sunday. Merrill had 11 points in 52 games last season.
Sep 20 - 11:23 PM

It was Jonathon Merrill and Ruslan Fedotenko's heads that collided during a drill on Friday.

Fedotenko appears to be fine, but Merrill needed to be helped off the ice. Merrill suffered a concussion last season and while nothing has been confirmed or ruled out yet, the obvious fear is that that's what's wrong with him now. For what it's worth though, Fedotenko did talk to Merrill in the locker room afterwards and was left with the impression that Merrill was feeling better.
Sep 19 - 5:01 PM

Jonathon Merrill needed assistance to get off the ice after colliding with Ruslan Fedotenko during Friday's practice.

Devils coach Peter DeBoer thinks Merrill will be fine, but he doesn't have specific information yet. Merrill had two goals and 11 points in 52 games with New Jersey last season.

Apr 4 - 10:36 AM

Jonathon Merrill suffered a facial injury in the third period on Saturday and did not return.

Merrill took a shot off his face with 7:07 remaining in the third as a Travis Hamonic slapshot took its toll on the defenseman. Consider him day-to-day for now. Merrill has two goals and 10 points in 47 games this season and has no fantasy value.
Mar 30 - 4:22 AM

Jonathon Merrill potted his second goal of the season and added an assist in the Devils 3-2 win on Sunday.

It was the best offensive display for Merrill in his young NHL career as he now has nine points this season. The 22-year-old second round selection has some offensive talent and coach Peter DeBoer has compared Merrill to the solid Paul Martin. Keep an eye on him in the future.
Mar 24 - 5:58 AM

New Jersey Devils coach Pete DeBoer compared rookie Jonathon Merrill favorably to Paul Martin.

"You hear the name Paul Martin a lot around here because he obviously played here and came up here as a young player," DeBoer said. "He's kind of a puck-moving defenseman that is solid. You can play him against other teams' top lines, he can kill penalties, he can help you on the power play. It looks like (Merrill) is going to be that type of defenseman." Merrill has enjoyed a solid rookie season, but he hasn't done much offensively. With just five points in 32 games, he's not worth putting on your radar yet from a fantasy perspective.
Feb 21 - 5:04 PM

Jonathon Merrill has been promoted by New Jersey.

He was down to AHL Albany on Feb. 9, but he did not play any games during the Olympic break. Merrill has five points in 32 NHL contests this season.
