John McFarland scored one of the Panthers' four goals in an 8-4 blowout loss at the hands of the Predators' rookies Friday evening.
Other Florida goal scorers were Josh McFadden, Logan Shaw and Chris Clapperton. The Baby Cats were actually wining this game 3-2 going into the third period but fell completely apart. McFarland had a good season in the ECHL in 2013 but that is a long way from being successful at the NHL level. Sat, Sep 7, 2013 09:58:00 AM

John McFarland is itching to play in the NHL this season.

McFarland is a stud OHL player who is making the push for NHL playing time. After his trade to Saginaw last year he scored 19 goals in 37 games. He will make a great compliment to Stephen Weiss, if he can crack the roster. His status will not be known until training camp breaks.

John McFarland has signed an entry-level contract with the Panthers.

No terms were disclosed. McFarland was the Cats' second-round pick in 2010. The forward was an average scorer with Sudbury and Saginaw of the OHL and does not profile to be a fantasy asset to any significant degree.

The Florida Panthers have returned a handful of players to their respective junior clubs and 2010 second-round pick John McFarland is one of them.

He was returned to his OHL club in Sudbury, while the Panthers also sent Alain Berger (Oshawa – OHL) Corey Durocher (Kingston – OHL), Alexander Petrovic (Red Deer – WHL) and Garrett Wilson (Owen Sound – OHL) back to their teams as well.

Panthers second round pick John McFarland is hoping to prove that all the teams that passed on him in the first round of the NHL Entry draft were wrong in doing so.

The Panthers were excited to land McFarland in the second round and GM Dale Tallon likes his gritty style of play, saying "He's got a little nastiness to him." Although Florida has high hopes for the young winger, all indications are that the Panthers believe he is a year away from being able to contribute at the NHL level.

The Florida Panthers have selected John McFarland with the 33rd pick in the 2010 Entry Draft.

This is a big fall for McFarland who was projected to go in the first round and possibly as high as the middle of the top round. He has excellent offensive skills but has had a problem with his attitude and that certainly did not help his draft status. McFarland could be an absolute steal here but will definitely need a change in attitude if he hopes to make it in the NHL.
