The Detroit Red Wings have returned Riley Sheahan to the minors.
Sheahan was recalled when it was thought that Henrik Zetterberg would not be able to play on the weekend due to his groin trouble. Zetterberg did play but coach Mike Babcock still put Sheahan in the lineup where he saw fourth line minutes alongside Cory Emmerton and Patrick Eaves. "He was good, and he's going to be a good player for us," coach Mike Babcock said. "But he's got to get quicker and play with more patience." He will continue to play for Grand Rapids where he had 16 goals and 35 points in 67 games before his recall. Apr 9 - 9:11 AM

Detroit prospect Riley Sheahan was apologetic in his first public comments since pleading guilty to the "superdrunk" offense of operating a vehicle with a blood-alcohol content of .17 or more.

"It was a terrible decision. I'm paying the consequences for it," he said. "There's so much space in my life now to recover from it and make better decisions, and teach people that they don't want to go through something like that." Sheahan said he felt terrible about embarrassing his parents and the Red Wings organization. He is hoping to put that ugliness behind him and carry on with his professional career in Grand Rapids, where he has 12 points in 28 games this season.

Riley Sheahan potted the lone goal Grand Rapids goal in its 2-1 loss to Peoria on Wednesday night.

He faces charges for being "super drunk" and for providing false information, as he had also been carrying teammate Brendan Smith's ID. The 20-year-old has four goals and four assists in the AHL.

The Detroit Red Wings were impressed with the play of first round pick Riley Sheahan at prospect's camp.

Sheahan played at Notre Dame last season and was impressive there as well despite the lack of offensive stats. "It was definitely a lot of work and it was pretty tiring, but I had a lot of fun," Sheahan said. "I think the biggest thing Ken Holland said and these guys were enforcing is your work ethic on and off the ice. All the players in the NHL are there because they're willing to pay the price. I learned there's a lot of hard work ahead of me." Sheahan will return to college hockey next season and is still more than a few years away from appearing in a regular season game for Detroit.

"A very strong centerman. Strong skater. He's a heady player who projects to be a power forward. Maybe a little bit like Johan Franzen." Sheahan should remain with Notre Dame at least for next season where he will gain valuable experience as a top-six forward and play on special teams.
