If you are looking for a boost in your penalty minute totals, you might consider Florida defenseman Alex Petrovic.

Petrovic, who was called up from the AHL for Monday's game to replace an injured Erik Gudbranson, has always been a physical rearguard and has amassed 27 penalty minutes in seven career NHL games. With Red Deer of the WHL, Petrovic registered two PIMs per game over his final two junior seasons and in 90 AHL games he has amassed 148 PIMs. Looks like a good source of PIMs to us.

Alex Petrovic has been loaned to AHL San Antonio.

He was expected to earn his way onto Florida's defense this season, so his demotion comes as a bit of a surprise. Joining him in the minors are forwards Jonathan Hazen, Anthony Luciani, Mattias Lindstrom, Philippe Lefebvre, Garrett Wilson, John McFarland, and Logan Shaw, as well as defensemen Jonathan Racine and Josh McFadden. The Panthers also released Jed Ortmeyer and 10 other players from their tryout contracts and assigned them to San Antonio.

If you are looking for a sleeper penalty minute defenseman, Alex Petrovic is worth considering.

The Cats have only four healthy rearguards on their roster at the moment so Petrovic's chances of making the team out of training camp are very good. In six games with Florida last season Petrovic amassed 25 PIMs. He has averaged approximately two penalty minutes per game over his last three WHL and AHL seasons and makes an intriguing selection for those in pools that include PIMs as a positive stat.

Alex Petrovic is excited about the opportunity of earning a full-time job.

The Panthers passed on taking defenseman Seth Jones in the draft, and it's not lost on their young defensemen that their time is now. "Obviously, they have confidence in the new guys coming up and the guys they have here now," Petrovic said. "That’s awesome. I’m pretty proud to be in that position. I just need to seize the moment." Petrovic, along with Erik Gudbranson, Dmitri Kulikov and 2012 first-rounder Michael Matheson all have very bright futures. Petrovic played in six NHL games last season.

Alex Petrovic and Colby Robak are projected to get long looks at training camp next fall.

Petrovic dressed in six NHL contests, while Robak appeared in 14 games for the Panthers during the lockout-shortened season. Petrovic can add some ruggedness to Florida's back end if he gets a shot with the big club in 2013-14.

Florida coach Kevin Dineen was impressed with the play of Alex Petrovic in his fourth NHL game on Tuesday night against the New York Rangers.

He received a personal-high 21:28 of ice time, while producing a plus-1 rating, four hits and a blocked shot. "I think he is making a statement that he is comfortable playing in the NHL," Dineen said. He shouldn't be on fantasy radar though.
