Alex Petrovic is expected to miss eight weeks with a broken ankle.

The Panthers were hoping that Petrovic would be available to return this week, but that obviously won't be the case now as he could miss about two months. He has already missed three contests due to the injury and Florida's defense will have to make some adjustments without him in the lineup.

Alex Petrovic scored a rare goal Wednesday night and it ended up giving the Florida Panthers an important victory in their first-round playoff series against the New York Islanders.

He has scored two goals in 112 regular-season games during parts of four NHL years, but broke a 1-1 tie early in the third to give the Panthers a 2-1 victory. The Panthers and Isles now are tied 2-2 in the best-of-seven, first-round series. Teddy Purcell scored the Panthers' first goal on a power play at 15:19 of the first period. It was Purcell's second goal of the series. Drawing an assist on Purcell's goal was Jaromir Jagr, marking the 200th postseason point of his illustrious career.

He picked up a goal and an assist, while getting into three fights with Sabres forward Evander Kane. Petrovic finished the contest with a plus-4 rating and 29 penalty minutes. Don't look for him to have a game like that again. Petrovic has just nine points in 41 games this season.

Petrovic will pair with captain Willie Mitchell to create Florida's third defensive unit. This will be his first game of the month, missing the last four weeks due to a foot injury suffered blocking an Alex Ovechkin shot. With three points, 18 PIMs, 24 blocks , and 58 hits in 21 games, Petrovic's value appears limited.

Alex Petrovic will miss at least a week with a foot injury.

According to Harvey Fialkov, the injury was originally sustained blocking an Alex Ovechkin shot. It's worth noting that the Panthers last played the Capitals on Halloween and Petrovic has played in each of Florida's 11 games since. Through 21 games this season Petrovic has three points, 18 PIMs, 24 blocks, and 58 hits.
