Alex Petrovic scored a rare goal Wednesday night and it ended up giving the Florida Panthers an important victory in their first-round playoff series against the New York Islanders.
He has scored two goals in 112 regular-season games during parts of four NHL years, but broke a 1-1 tie early in the third to give the Panthers a 2-1 victory. The Panthers and Isles now are tied 2-2 in the best-of-seven, first-round series. Teddy Purcell scored the Panthers' first goal on a power play at 15:19 of the first period. Alex Petrovic will get back into the lineup on Tuesday against Montreal.

He has been scratched since Mar. 29, but will play because of an injury to Erik Gudbranson. Petrovic had an assist in three straight games along with a plus-5 rating prior to being removed from the lineup.

He picked up a goal and an assist, while getting into three fights with Sabres forward Evander Kane. Petrovic finished the contest with a plus-4 rating and 29 penalty minutes. Don't look for him to have a game like that again. Petrovic has just nine points in 41 games this season.

According to Harvey Fialkov, the injury was originally sustained blocking an Alex Ovechkin shot. It's worth noting that the Panthers last played the Capitals on Halloween and Petrovic has played in each of Florida's 11 games since. Through 21 games this season Petrovic has three points, 18 PIMs, 24 blocks, and 58 hits.

He left last Saturday's game against Washington after blocking a shot, but X-rays came back negative and he was OK to play after skipping Monday's practice. Petrovic posted two shots and a plus-1 rating in 16:40 of ice time.

Alex Petrovic (lower body) didn't skate Monday after he blocked a shot with his shin on Saturday and left the game.

X-rays came back negative and Petrovic is expected to practice on Tuesday. Coach Gerard Gallant said Petrovic was given Monday's session off because it was painful for the defenseman to put on his skate.

Alex Petrovic has signed a two-year contract extension with Florida.

Petrovic had three assists and 34 penalty minutes in 33 games with Florida in 2014-15. He also had 20 points and 59 penalty minutes in 41 AHL contests. "We are very pleased to have re-signed Alex," said Panthers GM Dale Tallon. "Alex is a strong, physical defenseman who possesses great size and strength. He took great strides last season, logging valuable minutes for the Panthers. He was one of the Rampage’s top players and was named an American Hockey League All-Star. He is another building block for our team’s future."
