Calvin Pickard is staying upbeat despite spending the last three games on the bench.

Pickard is serving as Semyon Varlamov's understudy while Reto Berra spends some time in the minors on a conditioning stint. "I haven't played in a week, which in the big scheme of things isn't a whole lot of time," Pickard said. "But I get very quality practice time with the guys here and Francois (Allaire, the team's goaltending coach) is in town and I'm out there working with him." There's a fair chance he'll be in the NHL competing for playing time with Varlamov on a regular basis next season. If that happens, going a week without playing won't be unusual for him.

Calvin Pickard faced 46 shots, stopping 44 of them, in a 3-2 shootout loss to the Hurricanes on Tuesday.

Pickard doesn't have much fantasy value at the moment, but would be the number one netminder in Colorado should anything happen to Semyon Varlamov. His 6-6-3 record is accompanied by a 2.18 GAA and a .936 save percentage.

Calvin Pickard is expected to get the start in Tuesday's game in Carolina.

Pickard was recalled by the Avalanche on Saturday. The 22-year-old has been impressive in 14 games with the Avs this season. He is 6-6-2 with a 2.21 goals-again-average and a .934 save percentage. He won't have much fantasy value unless starter Semyon Varlamov misses time because of injury.

Calvin Pickard has been called up to the Avalanche.

Pickard has already shown he deserves to get a bigger look at the NHL, and he will, at least for the time being. Pickard is unlikely to unseat Semyon Varlamov, but he will start Tuesday at Carolina in the second of a back-to-back. Reto Berra has been sent down for a two-week conditioning stint. Pickard had a 2.21 goals-against average and .934 save percentage while up earlier this season.

Despite some fantastic work while Semyon Varlamov was out with an injury, the Colorado Avalanche assigned Calvin Pickard to the AHL.

Pickard's record might not have been impressive (6-6-2), yet his fantastic work kept Colorado in games. He had a fantastic .934 save percentage. It looks like Reto Berra will back up Varlamov while Pickard tries to stay sharp in the AHL.

Calvin Pickard yielded four goals on 32 shots in the Avs’ 5-2 loss to the Blackhawks on Saturday night.

Pickard had his work cut out for him in this one. The Avs struggle to hold onto pucks, and the Blackhawks are one of the best teams at controlling the pace of play. Pickard allowed two goals in the first, one in the second and the last one in the third period. Overall, he has a 2.21 goals-against average and .934 save percentage this season.

Calvin Pickard will get the start against Chicago Saturday night.

It may be his last start in the NHL for a little while as he may be ticketed to return to the AHL next week. Pickard has been a revelation this season and certainly has proven he can be an NHL caliber goaltender, if not star. He has a bright future.

Calvin Pickard is expected to return to the minors eventually.

Coach Patrick Roy intends to send down Pickard if Semyon Varlamov remains healthy and continues to play at the level that is expected from him. Roy wants Pickard to play and not sit on the bench as an NHL backup. Pickard will get the nod on Saturday against Chicago.

Calvin Pickard will stay with the Avalanche through the Christmas break.

He has a 2.06 goals-against-average and a .939 save percentage. The Avs will have an interesting decision to make when Semyon Varlamov returns from injury.

Calvin Pickard will be between the pipes for the Avs when they skate in Detroit on Sunday.

Pickard has been sensational for the Avs thus far. In his first dozen games he's allowed just 25 goals on 390 shots. That's good for an astounding .936% save percentage and 2.16 GAA. What's more, is that number one goalie Semyon Varlamov has only played 15 games himself this season.

Calvin Pickard will be in goal Saturday night when the Avalanche visit Buffalo.

Pickard has been nothing short of amazing posting a 2.27 GAA and .934 save percentage in 11 games since replacing the injured Semyon Varlamov. The 22-year-old will also start in Sunday's contest against Detroit. The bad news is that once Varlamov comes back, and that could be as early as next week, Pickard will be sent back to Lake Erie of the AHL. The Avs are not yet ready to cut ties with back up Reto Berra as they have invested $1.4 million in him for this season.

Calvin Pickard was tremendous in Colorado's 1-0 loss in Pittsburgh on Thursday night, stopping 47 of 48 before allowing the winning goal midway through overtime.

Pickard is expected to play both games this weekend in Buffalo and Detroit, meaning the 22-year-old is certainly worth a pick-up as Semyon Varlamov is out with a groin injury. Pickard is owned in just 15 per cent of Yahoo leagues. He is 4-5-2 this season with a .934 save percentage and 2.27 goals against average.
