Calvin Pickard has been sent back to the Lake Erie Monsters of the AHL.

Pickard was recalled when Jean-Sebastien Giguere went home to Montreal for the funeral of his mother. Giguere has returned to the Avs so Pickard was sent down. He was the backup on Sunday to Semyon Varlamov.

The Colorado Avalanche have recalled Calvin Pickard from the minors.

Pickard was recalled to back up Semyon Varlamov as Jean-Sebastien Giguere had to return to his hometown of Montreal due to the death of his mother. Look for Pickard to be returned to the Lake Erie Monsters upon the return of Giguere.

The Colorado Avalanche have summoned Calvin Pickard.

Jean-Sebastien Giguere (personal) will be unavailable on Saturday, so Colorado needed another goaltender. Pickard will probably be demoted when Giguere rejoins the Avalanche on Sunday.

Calvin Pickard was a beast Friday night for Lake Erie, stopping 42 of the 43 shots he faced in the Monsters' 2-1 win over the Milwaukee Admirals in AHL action.

Pickard is making a gigantic impact in his first full season tending the Monsters' net. He is 4-2 with a 1.82 GAA and .944 save percentage.

Calvin Pickard has a 1.01 GAA and .969 save percentage in three games with the AHL Lake Erie Monsters.

Pickard already has two shutouts. He's playing in his first full AHL season after recording a 3.59 GAA and .906 save percentage in 64 games with the WHL Seattle Thunderbirds in 2011-12. He might eventually earn a spot on the Colorado Avalanche's roster, but he's not projected to have any fantasy value this season.

Calvin Pickard has enjoyed a strong start to the AHL season with Lake Erie.

He recorded his first pro shutout on Sunday against the Toronto Marlies by stopping 40 shots and made 29 saves in a 3-2 loss to Oklahoma City in his other outing. Pickard played his fourth season with the WHL's Seattle Thunderbirds in 2011-12, but he also appeared in two games with Lake Erie. He's with the Monsters to stay this campaign and if he can maintain his hot start then he should be among the league leaders for most of the year.

Although the Colorado Avalanche recently acquired Semyon Varlamov, they haven't given up on goaltending prospect Calvin Pickard.

Pickard said that the acquisition "doesn't change anything in my development stage." We have no trouble believing that seeing as Pickard was probably at least a couple years away from playing in the NHL anyways. That being said, he could develop into a starting goaltender, so he's worth checking in on now and then. He still has a year of junior eligibility left, so he'll probably start the 2011-12 season with WHL Seattle.

The Denver Post is reporting that goaltender Calvin Pickard is expected to sign an entry level contract on Friday.

Pickard was thought to be a first round pick in mock drafts in 2010, so when the Avalanche grabbed him with the 49th pick, they were thrilled. He was 27-33-8 record this season for Seattle of the Western Hockey League, with a 3.36 GAA and .916 save percentage. He is still a few years away from having any fantasy value as he will play in the WHL again next season and spend a year or two in the minors after that.

The Colorado Avalanche have selected goaltender Calvin Pickard in the second round.

Some mock drafts had the Avs taking Pickard in the first round so they have to be happy grabbing him this late. Calvin is the brother of Nashville prospect Chet. Pickard was the second ranked goalie in the draft behind Jack Campbell but Phoenix took Mark Visentin late in the first round. Pickard is still a few years away so the Avalanche will rely on Craig Anderson and Peter Budaj in the interim.
