Calvin Pickard turned aside all 28 shots he faced in Wednesday's 1-0 win over the Dallas Stars.

Pickard will enter the year as Colorado's backup goalie, but with Semyon Varlamov ahead of him on the depth chart, anything is possible. Varlamov tends to run hot and cold during the course of a year, so there's a chance Pickard may be able to get more starts if he shows some consistency. The 24-year-old had a 7-6-1 record with a 2.56 goals-against-average and a .922 save percentage in 20 NHL games last season.

Calvin Pickard is looking to earn more NHL playing time in 2016-17.

"I'm going to get my fair share of starts, and I'll get more if I play well," Pickard said. "I just want to take it day-by-day, get a few good practices here in camp, move into the Burgundy-White (scrimmage Sunday) and gets some exhibition games for sure with Varly gone at the World Cup. So it's going to be good for me to get my game sharp." He will back up Semyon Varlamov this season after bouncing between the AHL and the NHL for the last two campaigns. Coach Jared Bednar isn't sure yet how he will divide the workload among his netminders.

Calvin Pickard's recently signed two-year deal with the Colorado Avalanche is worth $2 million.

Pickard will earn $925,000 in 2016-17 and $1,075,000 the following season. That's a pretty good contract for Colorado given how much growth Pickard could see over the next two seasons. Of course no young goaltender is a sure thing, but there's a fair chance that Pickard will have earned a far more lucrative contract by the time this bridge deal is done.
