Calvin Pickard stopped three of four shots in relief of Reto Berra during Tuesday night's 5-1 loss to Toronto.

Pickard is with the club because Semyon Varlamov is out with a groin injury. Pickard allowed a goal to Leafs forward James van Riemsdyk with just over four minutes remaining in the third period. If Berra continues to struggle, the Avs could opt to give Pickard some more work.

Calvin Pickard has been called up by the Colorado Avalanche.

Semyon Varlamov is day-to-day with a groin injury, so the Avalanche needed another goaltender. Pickard has gotten off to a strong start in the AHL with a 2.27 GAA and .935 save percentage in nine contests.
Nov 11 - 5:57 PM

According to Joe Sakic, Calvin Pickard will be with the Avalanche full-time next season.

With Semyon Varlamov struggling, beat reporter Mike Chambers suggests that the Avalanche should call Pickard up from the AHL. GM Joe Sakic has other ideas for his younger goaltender. "He’s going to be here next year for sure," Sakic said of Pickard, who is 5-0-2 for the 5-0-3 Rampage. "We have no problems with our goaltending this year. The idea was for him to back up what he was doing last year (in the AHL) and have an MVP-type season which he is right now. For us there is no rush and he’s at that age where he needs to play a ton."

Nov 8 - 10:19 AM

Calvin Pickard has been sent to AHL San Antonio.

Pickard was in the running for the backup gig, but Reto Berra will keep that job for now. Pickard still has a bright future though and he'll likely be called up in the event of an injury.
Sep 30 - 2:12 PM

Calvin Pickard stopped 30-of-32 shots in a 2-0 preseason loss to Calgary on Tuesday.

Pickard is expected to spend most of this season in the minors this season but it should be noted that he has done well in his short stints in the pros. He recorded impressive peripherals with a 2.35 goals-against average and a .932 save percentage over a five game stint. If there are any injuries to Reto Berra or Semyon Varlamov he will see time in the big league.
Sep 30 - 12:08 AM

Calvin Pickard has agreed to a one-year, two-way contract with Colorado.

According to a source, Pickard will make $850,500 at the NHL level. Pickard appeared in 16 games with the Avalanche over five stints last season. He recorded impressive peripherals with a 2.35 goals-against average and a .932 save percentage during that time. However, he's expected to spend most of the 2015-16 campaign in the minors if Semyon Varlamov stays healthy because the team has Reto Berra as its backup.

Aug 6 - 4:22 PM

Calvin Pickard has been sent back to the AHL.

That was to be expected as he Pickard was with the Avalanche on an emergency basis to fill the void left by Semyon Varlamov's groin injury. Varlamov returned on Thursday, setting the stage for Pickard's demotion. He has a 2.35 GAA and .932 save percentage in 16 NHL contests in 2014-15.
Mar 13 - 12:11 PM

Calvin Pickard is scratched for Thursday's game against the New Jersey Devils.

Pickard was recalled earlier this week (on an emergency basis) because Semyon Varlamov was battling an injury. All signs point to Varlamov starting this game, so Pickard wouldn't be allowed to dress at all. Reto Berra will serve as the backup goaltender.
Mar 12 - 8:16 PM

Calvin Pickard is ready to get the nod again if Semyon Varlamov isn't able to play Thursday due to a groin injury.

"I'm not sure what's going to happen, but I'll be ready to go in there when they call me on," said Pickard. "I've had a chance to string together a few games at a few different times. I'm used to it. I'm comfortable playing at this level. (Tuesday), obviously, was not what I wanted, but some nights you don't get the bounces." He was pulled in Tuesday's game against Los Angeles and he surrendered three goals on eight shots.

Mar 12 - 10:04 AM

Calvin Pickard got the hook in the first period after allowing three goals on eight shots to the Kings on Tuesday night.

Pickard struggled to see the puck in the early fast pace of the game and wasn't given a long lease in this very important playoff-type game. Reto Berra came into the game to spell Pickard. Pickard was very good early this season when he was forced into a starting role thanks to injuries to Varlamov. It is pretty apparent they trust him more than Berra still though
Mar 10 - 9:50 PM

Calvin Pickard will start for the Avalanche on Tuesday.

Semyon Varlamov is out with a lower-body injury. Pickard has a 2.18 GAA and .936 save percentage in 15 games with Colorado in 2014-15.
Mar 10 - 1:14 PM

Depending on how Semyon Varlamov feels after Tuesday's morning skate, Pickard may get the call to start against Los Angeles. Varlamov suffered a lower-body injury on Sunday.
Mar 9 - 5:57 PM

Calvin Pickard is expected to spend the foreseeable future in the minors with Lake Erie.

The Avalanche will lean heavily on Semyon Varlamov and Reto Berra will serve as his understudy. Pickard has been impressive when he's been given the opportunity to play this season. He owns a .936 save percentage and a 2.18 goals-against average in 15 appearances.

Jan 29 - 4:51 PM

Calvin Pickard is staying upbeat despite spending the last three games on the bench.

Pickard is serving as Semyon Varlamov's understudy while Reto Berra spends some time in the minors on a conditioning stint. "I haven't played in a week, which in the big scheme of things isn't a whole lot of time," Pickard said. "But I get very quality practice time with the guys here and Francois (Allaire, the team's goaltending coach) is in town and I'm out there working with him." There's a fair chance he'll be in the NHL competing for playing time with Varlamov on a regular basis next season. If that happens, going a week without playing won't be unusual for him.
