Calvin Pickard will be in goal Saturday night when the Avalanche visit Buffalo.
Pickard has been nothing short of amazing posting a 2.27 GAA and .934 save percentage in 11 games since replacing the injured Semyon Varlamov. The 22-year-old will also start in Sunday's contest against Detroit. The bad news is that once Varlamov comes back, and that could be as early as next week, Pickard will be sent back to Lake Erie of the AHL. The Avs are not yet ready to cut ties with back up Reto Berra as they have invested $1.4 million in him for this season. Dec 20 - 12:45 PM

Pickard is expected to play both games this weekend in Buffalo and Detroit, meaning the 22-year-old is certainly worth a pick-up as Semyon Varlamov is out with a groin injury. Dec 13 - 9:47 PM

Look for Calvin Pickard to get the start Saturday agains the Blues.

It will be a good test for Pickard, who has been a bit of a revelation this season replacing the injured Semyon Varlamov. The Blues will be coming to Denver with former Avalanche veteran Paul Stastny. It will be the first time Statsny will be using the visitor's dressing room in the Pepsi Center in what will likely be an emotional encounter. We think Pickard will be up for the challenge.

Dec 11 - 2:07 PM

Calvin Pickard was outstanding in stopping 33-of-34 shots but it wasn't enough as the Avs couldn't give him any goal support in a 3-0 loss to Nashville.

The only shot to get past the Avalanche rookie was the brilliant breakaway move from Filip Forsberg early in the game. Pickard has shown he can play at the NHL level with 2.30 goals against average and .929 save percentage in eight appearances this season. With Semyon Varlamov out with a groin injury and Reto Berra struggling, it is very likely the rookie gets the majority of the starts the next few weeks. He will be a decent cheaper option at most DFS sites.

Dec 9 - 2:24 PM

Calvin Pickard has been brought up by Colorado.

Semyon Varlamov is sidelined with another groin injury, so the Avalanche may turn to Pickard to start the bulk of the games in his absence. It's likely that Pickard will get the nod on Tuesday night.
Dec 9 - 10:48 AM

Calvin Pickard will likely be called up by the Avalanche.

He should be expected to start Tuesday's game against Nashville because Reto Berra has struggled mightily of late and Semyon Varlamov has a groin injury. Berra was pulled in each of his past two starts and he didn't look good in two outings before that either.

Dec 8 - 5:07 PM

Calvin Pickard has been sent to the minors.

That further confirms that Semyon Varlamov will return on Thursday. There was talk of keeping Pickard even after Varlamov recovered from his groin injury, but the decision was ultimately made to stick with Reto Berra. In the end, the Avalanche felt that having Pickard in the minors where he would get plenty of ice time was preferable to keeping him on the team given that the plan is to start Varlamov "a lot" now that he's healthy.
