Nick Bjugstad is happy to have his new contract completed.

"Thankfully, we could get the deal done halfway through the season rather than wait," Bjugstad said Wednesday. "I didn't want to deal with any of that." He would've been a restricted free agent in the summer. He agreed to a six-year deal worth $24.6 million on Tuesday night and the deal was announced by the club on Wednesday. Nick Bjugstad is in a mild scoring slump as the Panthers head into Sunday evening's game against the Maple Leafs.

Bjugstad, who has had a bit of a breakout season, has not registered a point in five games. It is the second time this campaign he has gone through such a stretch. Besides these two pointless periods, Bjugstad has been terrific this year and we fully expect him to resume his scoring ways.

The Florida Panthers have an opportunity to jump back into a potential playoff spot with a win over Philadelphia on Thursday.

The Panthers are one point behind the Boston Bruins for the final playoff spot, but they do have three games in hand on the B's. "We know where we're at," center Nick Bjugstad said. "Definitely know and we're getting points, inching our way up the standings. Every game is a huge game for us. We want to keep working our way up, getting out of the wild-card spot and be secure. But obviously it's a long season. It's still early." Holding on to a playoff spot in December doesn't mean anything. The Panthers will have to continue playing well if they hope to make it to the post-season this spring.

Center Nick Bjugstad registered his 12th goal of the season in the Florida Panthers' 4-2 loss to the Blues in St. Louis Monday night.

Bjugstad has been on fire. He has all 12 of his goals in his last 16 games. The 22-year-old speedster has clearly become a top-caliber fantasy player. Also scoring for Florida Monday was Aaron Ekblad, his fifth of the season. Ekblad's goal tied the game at 2-2 at 14:54 of the third period but the Blues picked up two goals (one into an empty net) late in the period.
