Brock Nelson could be first in line to play on the top unit with John Tavares and Kyle Okposo as the Islanders head into training camp.
Whoever gets the role will get an immediate jump in fantasy value as Tavares is one of the top 4-5 centers in the NHL and Okposo is not too shabby as well. Nelson potted 14 goals and 26 points in 72 games with the Islanders last season but ended the season with three goals in his last three games. "Johnny and Kyle are great players. To play alongside them, you have to be precise and on top of your game every minute," Nelson said. "If you're there, there's pressure to produce." He is obviously worth selecting if he is on the first line, but don't count on that being a permanent decision if it happens at the start of the season. Sep 14 - 8:41 AM

Brock Nelson scored a power-play goal in the Islanders' 2-0 win on Thursday.

Nelson didn't record a point in his previous 10 games. He has 12 goals and 13 assists in 70 contests in 2013-14.

Rookie Brock Nelson has skated on the Islanders' top line in practice for the past two days.

The season-ending injury to John Tavares will be a tough pill to swallow for the Isles, but it's likely to create opportunities for other players, Nelson being the first to get a chance at an expanded role. "I’m just taking it one day at a time right now," Nelson said. "I just have to keep trying to get better, prepare the same way and keep working on my game. If I’m called upon to play a couple more minutes, I need to be ready." Nelson has averaged just over 13 minutes per game this season while Tavares has played more than 21 per night.
Feb 20 - 8:40 PM

Brock Nelson had an assist in the Islanders' 1-0 victory on Tuesday.

Nelson has four goals and six points in his last nine games. That's one of the better stretches he's gone on in his rookie season. He's currently tied for 17th place among rookies with 19 points in 48 contests.
Feb 5 - 10:01 AM

Brock Nelson produced the opening goal of the game but it wasn't enough for him and the New York Islanders as they dropped a 2-1 decision to the New York Rangers at frigid Yankee Stadium Wednesday night.

Nelson's goal was his 10th of the season.

Brock Nelson found the back of the net in Monday's 4-3 shootout win over Philadelphia.

Nelson is starting to heat up as we get deeper into his rookie campaign. He has recorded at least a point in four of his last six contests, giving him eight goals and 16 points in 41 contests in 2013-14.
Jan 21 - 10:37 AM

Brock Nelson had a goal and an assist in the Islanders' 6-4 loss on Saturday.

Nelson has four goals and five points in his last seven games. The 22-year-old rookie is worth keeping an eye on, but he's a big risk if you intend to pick him up in a standard league.
Jan 19 - 10:51 AM

Brock Nelson found the back of the net in Friday's overtime win against Colorado.

He has two goals in his last three games to give him five on the year. Nelson isn't worth rostering in fantasy hockey yet, but he's just 22 years of age and is developing at the NHL level. He has 12 points in 36 matches.
Jan 11 - 10:33 AM

Brock Nelson practiced Friday with John Tavares' line and likely would play that role if the Islanders' ailing captain (lower body) doesn't play tonight against the New Jersey Devils.

Tavares missed practice yesterday and the Isles were clearly concerned about the superstar's status. Nelson has nine points in 28 games for the Isles this season.

Look for Brock Nelson to return to the New York Islanders lineup Saturday.

Nelson has been a healthy scratch the last three games. He has three goals and eight points in 19 games this season. He saw some time on the top line but was returned to a bottom six role upon the return to the lineup of Thomas Vanek.

After sitting out Friday as a healthy scratch, Brock Nelson was back in the lineup.

Nelson had been seeing time on the first line but when Thomas Vanek returned to action, Nelson became a bottom-six forward again. He only played 12:01 minutes with a minus-one rating and three shots on goal. We cannot recommend him at this time.

Brock Nelson has gone from playing on the Islanders' top line to being projected as a healthy scratch for Friday's game.

The Islanders shook up their lines now that Thomas Vanek is healthy enough to return. Despite the setback for Nelson, this isn't a case of Islanders coach Jack Capuano punishing him. "Brock's played extremely well for us, and I think other guys have seen that," Capuano said. Nelson might not have to wait long before he gets another opportunity.

Brock Nelson has found himself in "dreamland" during the last four games with the Isles.

Nelson has been slotting alongside John Tavares and Kyle Okposo on the Isles "big unit" during the last three contests. He's also spending a significant (5:55 per contest) amount of time on the Isles top power-play unit (appearing in 75.8 percent of all Isle's PP chances) and as a result Nelson has produced three points along with 11 shots on goal. Nelson is temporarily occupying Tomas Vanek's spot in the lineup, but with his play so far, he could be in for a long term gig if the Isles decide to "spread" the offense. Keep an eye on his situation as he could be a great potential waiver wire grab down the track.

Brock Nelson scored a power play goal as he replaced the injured Thomas Vanek on the Islanders top line.

It was Nelson's second goal of the season and he now has five points in 12 games. He was selected in the first round, 30th overall, in the 2010 Draft and now playing with John Tavares and Kyle Okposo will certainly boost his fantasy value.
