Craig Cunningham has become a versatile player for coach Claude Julien.
"I think Cunny's become a real valuable player for us," said Julien. "He'll take draws, he's a right-handed shot, which we don't have a ton of, especially on the wings. He can play both those positions. He's very reliable. You can move him up at times during games and he's become a very valuable asset for us." He mostly skates on the fourth line, but he did replace rookie David Pastrnak on the top unit when Boston was trying to protect a third-period lead in Dallas on Tuesday. However, Cunningham has two goals and one assist in 23 games, so he doesn't provide value to your fantasy squad. Jan 22 - 10:26 AM

Craig Cunningham's play has impressed Boston coach Claude Julien.

He will skate on the Bruins' fourth line Saturday night (alongside Jordan Caron and Gregory Campbell) in place of Daniel Paille, who will move up to the second unit in place of the suspended Brad Marchand. Cunningham, who is now a veteran of 20 NHL games and has two goals to his name, shows great desire on the ice and has a decent hockey IQ which are not lost on the Bruins' coach. "He's a guy we can rely on for faceoffs and versatility is important for us," said Julien. "He's a hard worker, he plays hard and practices hard, and he's a smart player." Nice praise. That said, Cunningham has no fantasy value, at least for now.

Craig Cunningham scored his first NHL goal in Saturday's 3-2 shootout loss to Ottawa.

Cunningham played well on a line with Chris Kelly and Milan Lucic. "It’s always nice to get your first one. The first goal you always remember," said Cunningham. "But in the end it didn’t really matter tonight. At this point in the season wherever we are right now, it’s about wins and losses." The 24-year-old was Boston's fourth round pick in 2010, but he has played in just seven games for the Bruins in his career. He has one goal in five games this season.

Craig Cunningham is starting to attract some attention within the Boston Bruins organization.

Cunningham has two goals in four games. "He’s been good. At camp we played him at center, but he played his best hockey last year on the wing," said AHL Providence coach Bruce Cassidy. "He gets his shot off. He goes to the net. His defensive responsibilities aren't as great because one thing about [Cunningham] is that he has to work to get around on the ice. He’s not a natural skater like [Spooner] so [playing at wing] frees him up that way a little bit." Cunningham has an uphill battle ahead of him if he wants to eventually become a regular with the Boston Bruins, but he is making good progress.
