Originally slated to play, Irwin will be replaced by rookie blue liner Mirco Mueller isntead. No word yet on the reasoning behind the move, but perhaps Coach McLellan figures this is a prime opportunity to get the kid some experience in a lower-risk situation.
Dec 7 - 7:13 PM

It broke an 11 game pointless drought for the defenseman who had both his assists from point shots that were tipped in. Matt Irwin is set to make his season debut on Tuesday.

Oct 12 - 9:42 AM

Matt Irwin is currently in a fight to retain his roster spot on defense in training camp.

Irwin came to camp with the fifth or sixth spot pretty well guaranteed but a slow start combined with some outstanding work by Taylor Fedun and Mirco Mueller has put his spot in doubt. If Irwin makes the team, his offensive flair should get him some power play time on the second unit.
Sep 28 - 11:03 AM

Matt Irwin could get an increased role on San Jose's back end this season.

Depending on how the Sharks align their right-handed shooters in Brent Burns, Jason Demers and Justin Braun, the left-handed Irwin may get a shot at a top-four spot. He might also get time on the second power-play unit. Irwin had 19 points, including just two goals, and 147 shots in 62 games last year. He will be looking for a big season, as he's eligible for unrestricted free agency next summer.
