Matt Irwin recorded six shots on goal in a disappointing night for the Sharks offense, dropping Game 1 2-0 on Tuesday.
The Sharks coaching staff praised Irwin for his performance in the first round against Vancouver, and he’s off to a solid start in this series. However, he and his defensive partner Dan Boyle will need to find a way to beat Jonathan Quick, who looks almost unbeatable right now. Logan Couture recorded just two shots and finished an ugly minus-2 on the evening. May 15 - 1:02 AM

Sharks defenseman Matt Irwin has impressed the coaching staff with his play in the first round of the playoffs.

Irwin has been paired with veteran Dan Boyle and he averaged nearly 18 minutes of ice time while recording one assist in the opening round sweep of the Canucks. "He hasn't strayed or wandered from his recipe for success in the regular season and the playoffs," Coach Todd McLellan said. "When you do that, you seem to fit in very well." Look for Irwin to continue holding down a lineup spot for the foreseeable future.
May 11 - 8:37 AM

San Jose defenseman Matt Irwin was given a night off earlier this week for the purpose of letting him rest.

Irwin was in the press box for Tuesday's shootout win over the Kings and was replaced by veteran Scott Hannan, but the young blueliner was back in for Thursday's win over the Wild. "He needed a rest more than anything," said coach Todd McLellan. "He's the one defenseman that's played 75 games already, having played in the minors during the lockout." Irwin seems like he'll be a mainstay in the San Jose lineup for as long as he's healthy.

The Sharks signed Matt Irwin to a two-year, $2 million extension.

In his first full NHL season, the blueliner has five goals and nine points in 26 games. He was set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer. "We’re very excited to have Matt Irwin for the next two years. We think he has a bright future," general manager Doug Wilson said.

The San Jose Sharks, after a 7-0-0 start, have only won five times in their past 22 games but, despite their recent struggles, a bright spot has emerged in rookie defenseman Matt Irwin.

Irwin is riding a four-game point streak -- the longest of his career -- and has totaled four goals and two assists over his past six games. With the fantasy defenseman waiver-wire pool being especially thin these days, the 25-year-old defenseman's recent stretch of production has made him a commodity in deep leagues -- especially since Brent Burns moved from defenseman to wing on a line with Logan Couture and Joe Thornton. Irwin, 6-foot-2, is operating on the team's top pairing with veteran Dan Boyle and is learning on the fly as the Sharks try to navigate through their struggles.

Defenseman Matt Irwin scored in his third consecutive game on Monday in a 5-3 loss to Anaheim.

Irwin's outstanding offensive contribution has led to the Sharks being able to play Brent Burns as a forward. He now has five goals and eight points in 19 games and is on a four game point streak. He is also seeing plenty of time on the power play and would make an excellent pickup if you are looking for a scoring defenseman. Patrick Marleau and Jason Demers also scored.
Mar 19 - 4:58 AM

Matt Irwin has been playing very well for the Sharks since his recall from the AHL.

In fact, his recent success, four points in the Sharks' last four games, has made the conversion of Brent Burns to forward possible. Keep an eye on Irwin. He may make a decent short term pickup.

San Jose Sharks recall D Matt Irwin from AHL Worcester.

Irwin was recalled to provide depth on defense with Brent Burns (undisclosed) placed on injured reserve Tuesday. Irwin spent nine games with the Sharks earlier this season and had one goal, two points and 14 shots.
Feb 26 - 1:18 PM

Matt Irwin has been demoted to the minors by San Jose.

The move opened up a spot on the roster to allow Brent Burns to play Saturday afternoon. In nine games with San Jose, Irwin had one goal, two points and 14 shots.
Feb 9 - 4:28 PM

Matt Irwin watched Saturday's game against the Predators from the press box.

The return of Jason Demers forced Irwin out of the lineup as coach Todd McLellan opted to keep his third pairing intact and insert Demers into the second pairing with Marc-Edourard Vlasic.
Feb 3 - 8:08 AM

Matt Irwin earned his first NHL point on Thursday.

Irwin assisted on Patrick Marleau's goal at 9:15 of the third period. He was playing in just his third game and is worth keeping an eye on, given how well he did offensively in the minors.
Jan 25 - 11:15 AM

Matt Irwin played 19:06 minutes in his NHL debut.

He played very well as he saw action due to the multitude of injuries on the San Jose blueline as Brent Burns and Jason Demers sat out. Irwin was a plus-one and had two shots on net as well as a couple of hits Sunday. He has little fantasy value but did have 11 goals and 42 points for Worcester last season.
Jan 21 - 11:33 AM

Defenseman Matt Irwin has a chance to play on the blueline Saturday and make his NHL debut.

The Sharks have a few injuries on the blueline, including Brent Burns, Jason Demers and Justin Braun, allowing a four year minor league veteran like Irwin to have a chance to play. "For a hockey player, all you're looking for is that opportunity," said Irwin. "If it comes, unfortunately, from some injuries to some guys, and that's the chance I get, I have to take advantage of it. I'm looking to just impress here in camp and maybe get in the lineup opening night." Irwin had a goal and 13 assists this season for Worcester after an 11 goal and 42 point effort last season.
Jan 15 - 10:10 AM

Matt Irwin signs a one-year extension with the San Jose Sharks.

Irwin had 11 goals and 42 points in 71 AHL games last season. He might get a genuine chance to compete for a spot on the Sharks' third pairing during their training camp.

Defenseman Matt Irwin will remain with the San Jose Sharks through the Christmas break.

Irwin is an extra defenseman at this time as he has not been put in a game since his recall on December 11. The Sharks have two defensemen on injured reserve as Doug Murray and Jim Vandermeer are injured and the Sharks do not want to be caught during the Christmas moratorium on trades and moves, if an extra blueliner is needed. Irwin has some offensive capabilities as he has registered 16 points in 21 games for the Baby Sharks this season in Worcester.
