Lance Bouma's scratch on Tuesday was a disciplinary action.
Bouma reported to the Saddledome at about 10:15 a.m. on Monday when he should have arrived at 9:30. Interestingly, he was excused from practice early because he wasn't feeling good, but then returned to the Saddledome about two hours later. With that in mind, it's possible that Bouma wasn't feeling 100% anyways. Feb 10 - 8:47 AM

Lance Bouma will return to the Flames' lineup on Sunday against Carolina, per Coach Bob Hartley.

It's been a trying season for Bouma, who's missed the last four games with a leg injury. He's seen just 11 games all season long with a goal and 31 hits to his credit. The 25-year-old had 16 goals and 34 points with 264 hits, 82 blocks, and 54 PIMs in 78 games for Calgary last season, however.
Jan 24 - 12:30 PM

Lance Bouma (leg) could return to action as early as Sunday.

Bouma has missed the last four games but was skating on the fourth line in practice Saturday, alongside Matt Stajan and Brandon Bollig. "He brings a lot of energy," Stajan said. "And he’s a smart player. I think he’s played on a lot of checking lines in his career against teams’ best players on a lot of nights. He finishes his hits, and he’s, for sure, our best shot-blocker on our team up front. Obviously, he had such a big year last year. This year’s been tough with injuries, but he always works hard and battles through. He’ll be a big part of our team down the stretch." Bouma has only a goal in 11 games this season after scoring 16 last season along with 18 assists.

Lance Bouma (leg) is still on course to return in the near future.

Bouma will miss his fourth straight game on Thursday, but he might be back on Sunday or Monday. "He looks good," Flames coach Bob Hartley. "It’s just a matter of the stitches don’t come off. It’s more precautionary than anything else. He’s doing good, skating well, he’s ready to go. We just want to make sure it’s fully healed." Bouma has a goal in 11 games this season.

Jan 19 - 3:02 PM

Lance Bouma's lower-body injury is a bad cut on his leg.

Bouma was hurt during Monday's game. "I was on my knees, and the guy just tried to take a stride and just right into my leg," Bouma explained. "It’s very unlucky, but lucky at the same time because it didn’t damage any tendons. So that’s a good thing." There's no exact timetable for his recovery, but his absence is expected to be measured in weeks rather than days.

Lance Bouma (broken ankle) is getting close to returning to action and could be ready to go during the Flames four game road trip this week.

Even though Bouma may be ready to go, there is no guarantee he will get into the lineup. "It might be next week, but it’s still iffy," coach Bob Hartley said Saturday. "Our medical staff have done unbelievable work with Boums, and to his credit, too, he put in lots of work in the gym. He shouldn’t even be on the ice at this time. He’s way ahead of schedule, but, at the same time, he’s not ready to play." Bouma was injured on October 13. He had 16 goals and 34 points last season so he could have some fantasy value in deep leagues down the stretch.

Although Lance Bouma has started to practice, his return isn't imminent.

Bouma is only eight weeks into his 10-to-12 week timetable and the fact that he's been practicing might lead to the belief that he's eligible to return ahead of schedule. However, it seems the Flames want to err on the side of caution. "You're not going to see Lance in the near future -- it's not day-to-day," Flames coach Bob Hartley said. "The good part is he's full practice, so we're going to get him (back), but he's missed so much time it's all about timing and stamina. Not before next week, for sure."

Lance Bouma (broken ankle) took part in Sunday's practice.

It was Bouma's first practice with the Flames since Oct. 13. He was originally slated to miss 10-to-12 weeks and we're now roughly eight weeks in. "Just healed really well, and I got out there a little quicker than expected," said Bouma. "It feels fine. It’s not quite up to speed yet, but I don’t feel anything (negative) in the legs."
