Chris VandeVelde has been handed a two-game suspension for elbowing Chicago's Jonathan Toews in the head.

The incident occurred during Wednesday's contest. The NHL Department of Player Safety took exception to the hit in part because they felt VandeVelde was in control of the play the entire time and still choose to deliver a high hit. He'll be eligible to return on March 22.

Chris VandeVelde (head) is expected to be back in the Flyers' lineup on Saturday.

VandeVelde needed help getting off the ice on Wednesday after being leveled by Brent Burns. Fortunately, it seems he's managed to avoid a major injury.
Jan 1 - 5:09 PM

Chris VandeVelde had to be helped off the ice in the third period during the Flyers' 4-2 loss to the Sharks on Wednesday.

VandeVelde was levelled by Brent Burns and was obviously wobbly on his feet as he was helped off the ice by teammates and trainers. He is day-to-day right now.

Chris VandeVelde scored a goal and registered an assist in a 4-3 win against St. Louis Monday night.

It was VandeVelde's first career multi-point game. He has two goals and six points in 34 contests in 2015-16.

Chris VandeVelde saw some action on defense Saturday.

The Flyers were in deep trouble late in the first period as they were down to only three defensemen. Nick Schultz was injured, Luke Schenn took 17 minutes in penalties for defending Schultz as he fought Dylan McIlrath, while Radko Gudas took a minor late in the first. So VandeVelde played defense and was obviously adequate enough as the Flyers shutout the Rangers 3-0. Don't expect to see that very often.

Chris VandeVelde registered an assist in a 5-2 loss Thursday night.

VandeVelde snapped a seven-game drought. He has a goal and three points in 16 contests in 2015-16.

Chris VandeVelde has fit in nicely for the Flyers on their fourth line.

The forward is playing alongside Pierre-Edouard Bellemare and Ryan White and they have played so well, especially in the penalty kill department that more offensive-minded players like Vincent Lecavalier and Sam Gagner have been relegated to the press box. VandeVelde played for coach Dave Hakstol at the University of North Dakota and the familiarity cannot hurt his cause. VancdeVelde has only an assist in six games so do not pick him up in fantasy pools unless you are trying to lose.

The Philadelphia Flyers have signed center Chris VandeVelde to a multi-year contract extension, general manager Ron Hextall announced Monday evening.

VandeVelde, 28, is coming off a breakout season in which he recorded nine goals and six assists for 15 points in 79 games. Before 2014-15, the 6-foot-2, 190-pounder had never appeared in more than 18 games in any of his previous four NHL seasons, and had posted a goal and three assists over 46 NHL games. VandeVelde was honored by his teammates at the end of the past season with the Pelle Lindbergh Memorial Trophy, awarded annually to the Flyers’ most improved player from the previous season.

Chris VandeVelde played four seasons at the University of North Dakota under new Flyers coach Dave Hakstol.

"I was at the rink working out when I found out. I was happy for him and pretty excited," said VandeVelde, who has skated the last two years for Philadelphia. "I definitely think we grew a good relationship. Coming in as a freshman you don't really know what to expect and he taught me a lot, and that relationship kind of grew through the four years there." He appeared in 72 games with the Flyers in 2014-15 and won the team's most improved player award.

Chris VandeVelde won Philadelphia's Pelle Lindbergh Memorial Trophy, which goes to the team's most improved player.

The winner of the award is determined by a player vote. VandeVelde, 28, had been bouncing between the AHL and NHL for years going into the 2014-15 campaign, but he ended up playing in 72 contests with the Flyers this season. "It was pretty cool, especially that my teammates voted on it," VandeVelde said in reference to winning the trophy. "I think I came a long way from last year. I started the year down in Allentown and worked my way up. I had a pretty good season. It was a fun year and I enjoyed it." VandeVelde is set to be a free agent this summer, but he hopes to re-sign with Philadelphia. It will be interesting to see if he can secure a one-way contract after showing what he can do as a regular bottom-six forward this season.

Chris VandeVelde scored his ninth goal of the season on Saturday.

VandeVelde scored only once last season in 46 games so his nine goals in 56 games this season is a vast improvement. He has 15 points this season so unless you are in a very, very, very deep league, he should not be on your team.

Chris VandeVelde has five goals in his last seven games.

That is quite a streak from the bottom six forward as he now has eight goals and 13 points in 42 contests this season. If you are riding him during this hot streak, kudos to you.

Chris VandeVelde scored for the Flyers in their 2-1 loss to the Hurricanes in Carolina Friday night.

It was VandeVelde's second goal of the season. The center made it 2-1 in the third period at 8:45 after wing Vinny Lecavalier did most of the work setting it up. Defenseman Mark Streit sent an outlet pass to Lecavalier, who weaved his way through the Carolina defense and set up Vandevelde with a drop pass at the left point. Vandevelde took a snap shot that beat Carolina goalie Cam Ward over his glove.
