The Philadelphia Flyers have sent Chris Vandevelde to the minors.

It was thought that Vandevelde may have done enough in training camp to get one of the final forward spots but it was not to be. He will start the season in Adirondack with the Phantoms and could be one of the first callups when the Flyers run into injury problems.

Chris VandeVelde may have defied the odds and secured a spot for himself on the Philadelphia Flyers roster.

"No one knew much about him," writes Tim Panaccio, Flyers insider for CSNPhilly.com. "No one gave him much of a chance. No one thought he’d last this long, either." But, Panaccio continues, "unless another bomb drops from the Flyers' front office, the 26-year-old has won the vacant spot at left wing over Austrian Michael Raffl and Phantom/Flyer Tye McGinn." General manager Paul Holmgren said VandeVelde’s one advantage over Raffl, who has played his entire career in Europe, was North American experience -- 38 games in the NHL with Edmonton; 194 in the AHL. Flyers assistant GM Ron Hextall discovered VandeVelde, who played college hockey with Hextall’s son, Brett, at North Dakota. For fantasy purposes, leave VandeVelde alone. At least, for now. He might ended up surprising everyone again, but he'll be relegated to fourth-line status at the outset.

Chris Vande Velde has been very good at Philadelphia's training camp and he appears to be in the mix for a roster spot.

He is competing with Scott Laughton and Michael Raffl to start the season with the Flyers. Vande Velde signed an AHL contract with the Phantoms last Friday and he's been used a great deal on the penalty kill at camp.

Chris Vande Velde was in the lineup for the Oilers Saturday.

Vande Velde received just 8:33 of ice time playing on the club's fourth line, but injuries to a couple of Edmonton forwards will likely keep him in the lineup for a few more games.

Edmonton Oilers recall Chris VandeVelde from AHL Oklahoma City.

VandeVelde has bounced back and forth between the NHL and the AHL over the past two weeks. He has no fantasy value in pretty much all formats and it wouldn't be surprising to see him headed back to the AHL before long.

The Oilers have assigned Chris VandeVelde to Oklahoma City of the AHL.

VandeVelde did an admirable job filling in while Eric Belanger was sidelined, but his return means the young center will rejoin the AHL Barons.

The injuries suffered by the Oilers have opened up a spot in the lineup for Chris VandeVelde.

The defensive-minded forward is acting as a member of the club's bottom six forwards and penalty killer, a role which he is happy to take on. "It’s been unfortunate with all the injuries but I got the call and I’m here now and I have to make the most of it," he said. "I just have to show them what I can do and maybe contribute. That would help. If I can, maybe I can stay up here for a while." He's not worth a look in fantasy leagues unless you're desperate for help in shorthanded goals.
