Chris Osgood took to the ice on Wednesday to assist goaltending coach, Jim Bedard, at a voluntary team skate.
"I'm not doing too much, now," Osgood said. "I'm just learning from Jimmy; just kind of riding shotgun, listening to what he says and learning how to run the drills myself, so when I'm in Toledo and Grand Rapids, I can do that." He doesn't have a formal title with the organization yet, but he appears to be enjoying life after retirement so far. Thu, Sep 1, 2011 09:10:00 AM

Chris Osgood has decided to hang up his skates after spending 17 seasons in the National Hockey League.

Osgood won three Stanley Cup in his career and came just one game shy of a fourth in 2008. Although he only started in 60 or more games four times in his career, Osgood became the 10th goaltender to ever reach the 400 win mark last season. His 2.492 career GAA is also good enough to rank 24th on the all-time list. Osgood led the league in Wins in 1995-96 and GAA in 2007-08, winning the Jennings Trophy in both of those campaigns. In the postseason, Osgood won 74 games, which is good enough for eighth place on the all-time list and he ranks fourth with 15 playoff shutouts. We wish Osgood luck in his future endeavors.

According to the Detroit Free Press, Chris Osgood will announce his retirement during Tuesday's scheduled conference call.

The Free Press originally thought Osgood and Detroit would take this opportunity to announce that he'll return for the 2011-12 season, but they no longer think that will be the case. Osgood has been a great mentor for Jimmy Howard, so Osgood would have been the obvious choice to continue serving as the number two goaltender if it wasn't for the groin problems he dealt with in 2010-11. Osgood didn't play after January 4th because of the injury. Stay tuned.

The Detroit Red Wings might announce the signing of Chris Osgood on Tuesday.

It hasn't been announced yet, but the Red Wings will hold a conference call on Tuesday. Osgood missed most of the season due to groin problems, but he has a great working relationship with starting goaltender Jimmy Howard. We'll keep you posted.

Red Wings GM Ken Holland won't sign a backup goaltender until he's talked to Chris Osgood.

"Ozzie comes backs Saturday or Sunday and I won't do anything until I talk to him first," Holland said. Detroit is believed to be debating between re-signing Osgood and grabbing Ty Conklin or another viable backup goaltender off of the free agent market. We'll keep you posted.

Although Detroit hasn't ruled out re-signing Chris Osgood, they are still looking for a backup goaltender.

"We owe it to ourselves to see what is out there," said Red Wings GM Ken Holland. "We have money to spend (under the salary the cap). There are players we remain interested in." Osgood was limited to 11 games last season because of groin problems and he didn't play after January 4th. We'll keep you posted.

The Detroit Red Wings should be in the market for a backup goalie on July 1.

The Red Wings are $16 million under the cap heading into free agency on Friday but don't expect them to spend a lot on a backup netminder. Chris Osgood will become a UFA on July 1 and it appears that his career with Detroit could be over. Jean Sebastien Giguere, Marty Turco, Ty Conklin and Mathieu Garon are available and any one would be a capable back up to Jimmy Howard at this time especially if they are paid around $1 million. It should be interesting tomorrow in Detroit if they do not re-sign Osgood.

The Detroit Red Wings could be in the market for a new backup goaltender once free agency starts on July 1.

The backup for most of the last two seasons has been Chris Osgood, but his contract will expire on July 1 and the Red Wings could be looking for a healthier netminder. Osgood says he is now healthy but he did not appear in a game after January 4 as he underwent sports hernia surgery after his groin injury failed to heal. He was poised to return on numerous occasions but always suffered a relapse. Detroit is naturally concerned about the 38-year-old netminder and will see who is available in free agency before thinking about committing to Osgood again. Stay tuned.

Chris Osgood would like to continue his NHL career and he's hoping to re-sign with the Detroit Red Wings.

Osgood considered retirement after being limited to 11 games in 2010-11 due to a groin injury. The next step is for the Red Wings to determine if they want Osgood back. If they decide to re-sign him, he'll serve as Jimmy Howard's back and start in about 20 games next season.

Detroit won't decide if they want to re-sign Chris Osgood for at least a couple of weeks.

Osgood also hasn't made it clear that he's interested in staying in the NHL for the 2011-12 season. "Ozzie hasn't said anything about his future, but if we were interested in him, I'm certain he'd have interest in playing," Detroit GM Ken Holland said. If Osgood does re-sign with the team, it will be to serve as Jimmy Howard's understudy. Stay tuned.

Chris Osgood said that his family will be a factor when he weighs the pros and cons of extending his NHL career.

"I do want to play, but it goes beyond that," Osgood said. "I have three kids now. They play 20 soccer games, and I see two or three of them. That definitely factors into it. There are a lot of things going into my decision." Osgood hasn't played since he underwent sports hernia surgery in January, but he said he is completely healthy now. If Osgood does re-sign with the Red Wings, he will serve as Jimmy Howard's understudy.

Chris Osgood has not decided whether or not he wants to return to hockey next season.

The 38-year-old goaltender had a tough season in 2010-11 as he had sports hernia surgery in January and was never healthy enough to return to action. If he decides to play one more season, then the Red Wings will have to decide whether or not to re-sign him. "I feel real good," Osgood said. "That's something, probably the only thing I know is for sure, I feel real good. I feel I can come back 100 percent. If I couldn't, then I definitely wouldn't consider coming back. That's something that I feel real good and that's not a factor in my decision." Stay tuned.

Chris Osgood will likely not dress in Round 2 even though he has looked good in practice.

The Red Wings will continue to use Joey MacDonald as the backup to Jimmy Howard as Osgood has not played in a game since January 4th. . "He hasn't played any games," coach Mike Babcock said. "What do we do about that? They won't schedule one for us to get him in." You are right Mike. They won't.

Chris Osgood (groin) thinks he's ready to serve as Jimmy Howard's backup, but it remains to be seen if Detroit will use him.

Osgood hasn't played since January 4th, so Detroit might decide to stick with Joey MacDonald. Detroit is waiting for the second round after sweeping the Phoenix Coyotes in four games.

Chris Osgood (groin) looked good in practice on Friday.

Osgood was moving well in practice as he split the net with Jimmy Howard and Joey MacDonald. It is still unknown if the Red Wings will even use him as a backup as he has not been in a game since January 4 due to the injury. The good news is that he was well enough that the Red Wings sent goalie Jeremy Pearce back to Grand Rapids of the AHL.
