Stephane Da Costa scored his first goal of the season in Ottawa's 4-2 loss to the Penguins on Wednesday night.

Stephane Da Costa is trying to be more responsible away from the puck this season.

"I’m trying to be honest," said Da Costa, which in part means that he's trying to play a more two-way game. "I’m trying to be more honest than what I was last year. I’m trying to bring energy, and I’m trying to skate a lot more. And I think it’s been good so far." Da Costa has offensive upside, but right now he's still just trying to establish himself in the NHL. It might be a couple more years before he has any fantasy value.

The 23-year-old played has played in 26 games over the past two years with the Senators, and he has five points in six games in the AHL after missing three weeks with an undisclosed injury. "I just want to be more of an all-around player," said the 5-foot-11, 173-pounder. "Physically I want to be a little better, too. I got a little better physically, I think. I can take impacts a little better. ... I’m trying to make an impact, trying to show I can play here. I need to work hard, and I think I can make it there again."

Stephane Da Costa is currently out with a lower-body injury.

Stephane Da Costa will get a chance to play on a line with Milan Michalek and Daniel Alfredsson.

It's a great opportunity for Da Costa, who has been impressive in training camp so far. Although there's a chance Da Costa won't even make the Senators out of training camp, the Senators do have openings on their top two lines and it's not out of the realm of possibilities that Da Costa end up getting top-six minutes.

Stephane Da Costa netted three goals for Ottawa in a 6-5 triumph over the Chicago Blackhawks in rookie tournament play on Sunday afternoon.

2011 first-round draft choice Mika Zibanejad also had a strong showing in the contest with a goal and two assists. They both garnered high praise following the match and they could be factors at the Senators' main camp as well. "It justifies our thinking that they both have a chance to crack our lineup," said assistant GM Tim Murray. "Both won't. It will be one or the other or neither. They both know it's a competition and somebody will outplay the other guy eventually."
