Derek Grant has been a valuable penalty killer for the Sabres this young season.
Buffalo's streak of killing off 12 straight man-advantage situations ended Tuesday night when the Wild scored. Grant has averaged 2:23 of penalty kill time per match, which ranks him second among Sabres forwards. He hasn't contributed a point in nine games though, so he shouldn't be on your fantasy radar. The Calgary Flames think they picked up a nice player in Derek Grant.

Grant signed a two-way deal with the Flames on Wednesday and will likely start the season in the AHL but he does have a shot to break training camp with the big team. "Our staff really liked him. I really credit the scouts on this one," said Flames GM Brad Treliving. "He’s a big body. He plays a real NHL-, pro-style game. He’s versatile — plays the wing, can play center. Smart. Intelligent. He’s coming here, and he’s going to battle for an opportunity. I think he gives us more depth, which you can never have enough of. When we do our organizational assessments of each team, this is a player our scouts wanted to acquire for a long time. So to be able to get him (Wednesday), it was a happy group." Grant has played previously with the Ottawa Senators with two assists in 25 games.
