Derek Grant has been a pleasant surprise for the Ducks this season.

Grant was a journeyman center that the Ducks inked to a one-year deal to provide the franchise with some extra depth given that Ryan Kesler wouldn't be ready for the start of the campaign. Further injuries occasionally pushed Grant into a more offensive role though and he's managed to hold his own with eight goals and 20 points in 51 contests. Keep in mind that he had no goals and seven assists in 86 career NHL games coming into this season. "He’s a guy that’s come in and played in a checking role," Ducks coach Randy Carlyle said. "Played a fourth-line role. We’ve moved him up in the lineup, in offensive roles. … You got to take your hat off to a guy like Granter for what he’s accomplished and where he started. The respect he’s earned not only from the coaching staff and management but from his teammates." It'll be interesting to see if the Ducks re-sign Grant given what he's done this season.

Derek Grant opened the scoring for the Ducks in a 3-2 overtime loss to Washington.

It was the seventh of the season for the center who has dropped from a top-two role to a bottom-two role with the return of Ryan Getzlaf to the lineup as well as the trade for Adam Henrique. Grant has 15 points in 33 games but has little value at this time because of his reduced role.

Injuries to the Ducks' top centers are really hurting the team.

Both Ryan Getzlaf and Ryan Kesler continue to be out of action and the Ducks have been forced to use a couple of bottom-two centers in Derek Grant and Chris Wagner as their top two pivots. Grant has five goals and 11 points in 23 games which is great for a third or fourth line center but doesn't cut it as a number one.

Derek Grant found the back of the net in the Ducks' 4-2 loss to Vegas on Wednesday.

Unfortunately Grant was also minus-three so those in leagues that value that category ended up getting a mixed return from him. Grant has five goals and 11 points in 21 contests this season.

Derek Grant posted a goal with a plus-2 rating and five hits in Wednesday's 4-2 win against the Bruins.

Grant has been a surprise fantasy contributor this season, posting four goals with 10 points over his past 12 games while turning in an impressive plus-6 rating during the span. The Ducks have been banged up and in need of someone to step in offensively and Grant has certainly filled some of the void.

Derek Grant is on a five-game point streak.

Grant recorded an assist on Tuesday to extend that run. In addition to his current point streak, he's only been held off the scoresheet once over his last nine contests. The 27-year-old entered the season with just six points in 85 career games. He currently has three goals and nine points in 15 contests this season.

Derek Grant was placed on the first line Saturday between Corey Perry and Rickard Rakell.

Grant has now been all over the lineup, from the first line to the fourth and has performed well everywhere. His beautiful pass on Saturday sprung Perry on a breakaway which he buried. "Obviously, I was always an offensive guy," Grant said. "And through juniors and college, same thing. My first couple of years pro, I had to learn the defensive side of the game. And then obviously my last couple of years in the minors, I’m able to find my game offensively again." Grant has three goals and eight points in 14 games but still did not see any ice time with the man-advantage on Saturday.
