With Travis Hamonic out (concussion), the New York Islanders are counting heavily on defenseman Matt Donovan.

Isles coach Jack Capuano made a bold move on Thursday with half of his top defense pair out, choosing to have rookies Calvin de Haan and Matt Donovan take on the Lightning's top line. "I thought Dono and I did a decent job," said de Haan. "The coaches showed a lot of trust in us and it's an honor to be out there against the other team's best forwards." It was Donovan's best game of the 27 he's played this season. He played a career-high 21:15, had a career-best five shots on goal and, buoyed by the steadiness de Haan has brought to just about every game he's played since his recall from Bridgeport, looked far more confident than he has before. That pair may get the call to match up against Claude Giroux in Philadelphia today, part of a tougher assignment overall for the Islanders.

Matt Donovan was benched for most of the second period Saturday as he was minus-three in a 5-2 loss to the Flyers.

Donovan is slumping and is now minus-six over his last three games. The Islanders are suffering on the blueline with injuries to Lubomir Visnovsky and Brian Strait. He only saw one shift in the last 15 minutes of the second period and played 13:19 minutes. He was on the ice for six shifts in the third. He has some offensive ability but if he is unable to turn it around defensively, he'll find himself in the press box once Visnovsky and/or Strait return.

Islanders coach Jack Capuano has been impressed with Matt Donovan's offensive abilities.

Donovan has a goal and two points in three games this season. He's getting a bit of power-play ice time and there's a good chance that will continue throughout the campaign. As a rookie, he's of course a gamble, but if you're hurting for defense, he's not a bad guy to try.

Matt Carkner and rookie Griffin Reinhart will sit as healthy scratches. Donovan skated in three games with the Islanders in 2011-12.
