Brian Gibbons is expected to battle for a spot on Columbus' fourth line at training camp.
His main competition is slated to come from Corey Tropp, Jerry D'Amigo, Simon Hjalmarsson, Alex Wennberg and Kerby Rychel. Gibbons had five goals and 17 points in 41 games with the Penguins last year, but he did show flashes of offensive skill as well as great speed. His spot on the roster is precarious because he agreed to a two-way deal in July. Aug 27 - 2:12 PM

The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed Brian Gibbons to a one-year, two-way deal.

Gibbons had five goals and 17 points in 41 games with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2013-14. He'll have a tough time earning a spot on the Blue Jackets' opening game roster and even if he does, we doubt he'll have any fantasy value in standard leagues.
Jul 4 - 4:04 PM

Brian Gibbons saw 10:14 minutes of action on Sunday.

Gibbons played as coach Dan Bylsma wanted to get more speed in the lineup to counter the Rangers. It worked in the 3-0 win. "His speed was a factor," Bylsma said. "I don't think he adds a physical element against the other team, but he does it with his speed." Tanner Glass was a healthy scratch as a result of Gibbons playing.

Brian Gibbons is drawing into the lineup for the Penguins in Game 2 of their second-round series.

Gibbons had been out since suffering an undisclosed injury in Game 2 of the first round. Tanner Glass will be scratched. Gibbons tallied 17 points in 41 regular-season games this year. He scored twice in the first round.

Brian Gibbons was medically cleared to return to action Saturday afternoon but it is not clear if he will play Sunday in Game 2 against the Rangers.

Gibbons hasn't played since he injured himself in Game 2 in the first round against the Blue Jackets. He may be a welcome addition as he scored twice in that game before exiting with the injury. Consider Gibbons day-to-day.

Gibbons missed Game 3 on Monday due to the ailment. "There's no timetable right now," Gibbons said. "I just went out and got a skate. It felt good to skate. That's all I know." He got an opportunity to play alongside Chris Kunitz and Sidney Crosby before he got hurt.

Apr 21 - 8:42 AM

No update was given on Brian Gibbons' status after Game 2 on Saturday night.

Penguins coach Dan Bylsma had nothing to say after the double-overtime Game 2 loss to the Blue Jackets. The 26-year-old played 2:26 in the first period, but he made the most of his time, notching two goals. Gibbons appeared to hurt himself during a collision with Ryan Johansen around the 11:26 mark and played just five shifts. He had 17 points with the Penguins in 41 regular-season games.
Apr 19 - 11:18 PM

Gibbons scored twice -- his first postseason goals -- in a matter of 2:26 of ice time. He went to the dressing room after a hit on Johansen around the 11:26 mark and did not return to the bench for the second period. Penguins coach Dan Bylsma gave no update on his condition after the game. Gibbons had 17 points with the Penguins and 30 points in the AHL this season.
Apr 19 - 8:23 PM

Brian Gibbons, described by Pittsburgh coach Dan Blysma as the Penguins' fastest skater, will remain on the team's No. 1 line with Sidney (The Kid) Crosby during the second game of Pittsburgh's playoff series against the Columbus Blue Jackets today.

Blysma moved Gibbons to the top line with Crosby and Chris Kunitz, a game won 4-3 by the Pens. Blysma explained speed is a quality Crosby craves in his linemates. "Sid's a player who likes and needs his line and his linemates to force the other team with their speed and with getting on defensemen and being able to read off that," Bylsma said. "[Gibbons] forces other teams with his speed, forces them with the pressure he can put on the puck. Sid is able to read off that. That's something he's always wanted on his wings."
Apr 19 - 11:05 AM

Brian Gibbons practiced on the Penguins' first line on Friday.

Pittsburgh moved Gibbons to the top line with Chris Kunitz and Sidney Crosby during Wednesday's game and it looks like they're sticking with that adjustment. This is a big opportunity for the 26-year-old rookie forward, who had five goals and 17 points in 41 games in 2013-14.
Apr 18 - 12:40 PM

Brian Gibbons was moved up to the Penguins' top line during Wednesday's 4-3 victory over Columbus.

Penguins coach Dan Bylsma wanted to take advantage of Gibbons' speed, which suits the play of Chris Kunitz and Sidney Crosby. Gibbons didn't end up getting a point, but that will change if he stays on the first line.
