Justin Faulk (upper body) is considered day-to-day now and he could be back in the lineup this week.

He hasn't been ruled out for Tuesday's game yet, but coach Bill Peters said "there's a real good chance" Faulk could return by Friday. Faulk hasn't played since Nov. 6 due to an upper-body injury.

He underwent an MRI Monday and the Hurricanes have not updated his status yet. What we do know is that Faulk is not with the team in New Jersey for Tuesday's contest. An update could come after the morning skate.

Justin Faulk scored a goal and added an assist in Carolina's 4-3 overtime loss to the Canucks on Sunday night.

Faulk, who had an assist in the Canes' opener, now has three points in two games this season. The 24-year-old clearly has the ability to be a consistent point producing defenseman. Teuvo Teravainen also scored his first as a Cane in the disappointing loss where Carolina squandered a 3-0 lead.

The injury sustained by Justin Faulk in Friday night's game against Washington is not considered serious according to Hurricanes' coach Bill Peters.

Faulk was removed from the contest more as a precautionary measure than anything else. Peters described the injury as general soreness in his lower-body. That is good news for Faulk owners. Consider the talented rearguard day-to-day.

He won't be returning to the game. This is definitely concerning news if you're a Hurricanes fan. But keep in mind that this is the preseason and sometimes coaches keep players out for precautionary reasons. We should find out more about Faulk's status in the next day or so. Faulk had 16 goals and 37 points in 64 games in 2015-16.

Defenseman Justin Faulk scored a power-play goal in overtime to give the Carolina Hurricanes a 2-1 triumph over the Washington Capitals in exhibition action Monday night.

Also scoring for Carolina in the opening preseason game for both teams was Patrick Brown. Madison Bowey tied the game at 1-1 in the third period for Washington before Faulk's winning goal. Eddie Lack stopped all 16 shots he faced and Alex Nedeljkovic made nine saves on 10 shots for the Hurricanes. Capitals forward Tom Wilson sustained an upper-body injury in the first period and did not return to the game as a precaution.

Justin Faulk wishes he had been selected as part of Team USA.

Faulk represented America in the 2014 Olympics, but was a surprise omission from their World Cup roster. "Obviously I’d want to be there, and I think I could help the team," Faulk said. "I think I’m a good enough player where I could play in that. But they went in a different direction. That’s their decision, and you have to respect it. I want to be there, and I wish I was. But I’ll just watch it and focus on what’s going on here and get to have a full training camp with the guys and get ready for the season." Faulk had 16 goals and 37 points in 64 games last season. He did finish with a minus-22 rating though, which was tied for the worst on the Hurricanes.

Justin Faulk was a surprise omission from Team USA's World Cup roster.

He represented the U.S. at the Sochi Olympics in 2014 and he has played at past World Championships. Faulk was an NHL All-Star last season and he registered 37 points in 64 games in 2015-16.

Faulk have served as a member of Team USA in three of the last four annual tournaments. The year that he didn't participate in the Worlds, 2014, he was a member of the States' Olympic team. He has four goals and 17 points in 28 contests in his career at the Worlds. Along the way he's earned the Bronze Medal in 2013 and 2015.
